Authorities now say that a 15-year-old Champaign boy who died after what was first reported as potential bullying actually died of a previously undiagnosed medical condition.
Champaign police said Wednesday that an autopsy in St. Louis found that Luke Miller died of an unspecified condition. The autopsy found no evidence that he was attacked.
"The autopsy did not reveal the presence of any trauma or significant injury that would be consistent with being attacked or beaten, but that Miller’s death was tragic and medically related," a police news release stated.
The St. Louis Medical Examiner's Office did not return a call from WILL.
Miller died March 11 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis a day after what was initially reported as an attack at Centennial High School. Miller was a Centennial student and his family said he had been bullied.
Champaign County State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said last month that, while the investigation was still being conducted, no evidence of a crime had been found.
Luke Miller died on the day of an archery tournament. It was known he was bullied to death. On Friday, the day before his death, he was severely beaten by 4 individuals. His best friend's dad is Dr. Andy Arwari (now in FL.). Dr. Arwari was on staff at Carle hospital when Luke Miller was brought in and paid close attention. He told his wife that Luke was so severely stomped that his liver was mush. Luke died from a torn aorta so that is a pretty severe stomping. Luke's mother has told conflicting stories of what happened to Luke. Luke's youth pastor at FUMC, Meredith Hecker, was at the hospital. Attending nurses came out and told Meredith Luke named the four individuals.
