Iran’s Hormuz trump card is rapidly losing strategic value, expert tells 'Post' - interview
Although 14 to 15 million barrels of oil passed through Hormuz per day before the war, an expert told the Post that it was entirely possible to manage without much of that supply.
Though the Islamic Republic of Iran has established a “sophisticated panoply” to protect itself against the possibility of regime change, its trump card, the Strait of Hormuz, is losing its strategic value and will continue to do so, Thomas O’Donnell, an American energy and geopolitics strategist and a Global Fellow of the Wilson Center, told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
With many of the regime’s regional proxies degraded over years of war with Israel and its nuclear ambitions delayed after the 12 Day War in June last year, Tehran only has its rockets, drones, and ability to threaten the Strait of Hormuz left as an insurance policy against attempts to topple the regime, he noted.
These remaining elements will be used to dissuade action while it restores the others, but they are losing the weight they once carried, O’Donnell added.

In a speech to the Jerusalem Municipality, where he received an award on behalf of the Mossad, Barnea supported the Trump administration's latest economic pressure moves against the Islamic Republic.
He said that it was clear these were needed, but that they would be insufficient alone and would require the use of force as well, although he did not specify whether that force would require another round of massive airstrikes or whether a covert sabotage campaign would be sufficient.
"The decision to place the most severe sanctions on Iran was a correct and praiseworthy decision. But the sanctions are just another stage. There will be no choice, in my view, other than to escalate the economic actions, the policies, and the operations against the regime until it falls, and it will fall," stated Barnea.

PM, Defense Minister deny any instruction exists to reopen Erez Border Crossing into Gaza Strip
There are preparations to open the crossing on September 1, but it still requires final approval, sources from COGAT told The Jerusalem Post.
There is "no instruction" to open the Erez Border Crossing for the transfer of goods into the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said in a joint statement released on Thursday afternoon.
"Israel's policy in Gaza is clear and has not changed. There will be no reconstruction before the disarmament of the Hamas terrorist organization and the complete demilitarization of the Gaza Strip," Netanyahu and Katz said.
This follows reports in Israeli media of plans to reopen the border crossing from September 1.
There are preparations to open the crossing on September 1, but it still requires final approval, sources from the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

Syrian national arrested on border trying to smuggle rocket shells into Lebanon
The approximately 330-kilometer border with Syria has been used by Hezbollah, as well as other terrorist groups and criminal gangs, to smuggle supplies and people in and out of Lebanon.
A Syrian national attempting to smuggle multiple rocket shells into Lebanon was detained on the Lebanese-Syrian border in Aaiha, a small village in the Rashaya District of the Beqaa Governorate in Lebanon, the Lebanese Army announced on Wednesday.
The rockets were seized, and an investigation is underway, while the detainee remains under the supervision of “the competent judiciary,” the Lebanese military stated.
The approximately 330-kilometer border with Syria has been used by Hezbollah, as well as other terrorist groups and criminal gangs, to smuggle supplies and people in and out of Lebanon.

Sudanese army says it downed drone crossing from Ethiopia, third such incident in recent days

Addis Abeba – Sudan’s army said on Thursday it shot down a “hostile” drone that crossed into southeastern Blue Nile State from Ethiopian territory, marking the third such incident reported near the border in recent days, Sudan Tribune reported.
The military said the drone was intercepted on Thursday morning north of Sarkam. It did not identify the operator, specify the drone’s point of origin or say what its intended target was.
Ethiopian authorities had not immediately commented on the allegation.
The latest incident follows Sudanese authorities’ reports of two similar drone interceptions in Blue Nile State on Sunday and Monday.
Earlier this month, the Sudanese army also said it had shot down three FH-95 drones in North Kordofan State, following four other reported drone interceptions in the area in July.
On 24 August, Addis Standard reported that Sudan’s Defense Ministry said it had shot down a “hostile” drone over the Kurmuk area of Blue Nile State, near the Ethiopian border, alleging that it had been launched from Ethiopian territory.
Ethiopian authorities did not immediately respond to the allegation at the time.
The reports come amid intensified fighting across Sudan, including in Blue Nile, Darfur and Kordofan, as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) continue their conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudanese authorities have repeatedly accused the RSF of carrying out drone attacks against military positions and civilian infrastructure. The RSF has generally rejected such accusations, saying its forces are acting to protect civilians.
The Blue Nile region, particularly areas around Kurmuk near the Ethiopian border, has witnessed renewed fighting as the conflict spreads across Sudan.
The latest allegation also adds to previous claims by Sudanese officials linking alleged RSF drone operations to Ethiopian territory.Red Sea trade
On 12 August 2026, Addis Standard reported that the RSF had attacked the border town of Geissan in Blue Nile State, according to the paramilitary group and local authorities.
A Sudanese army source cited by AFP said the assault was launched “from inside Ethiopian territory.”
The fighting triggered fresh displacement, with about 2,500 people fleeing Geissan, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The UN agency’s Displacement Tracking Matrix estimated that around 500 families were displaced as security conditions deteriorated.
Most of those displaced moved to other locations within the Geissan area, while others crossed the border into Ethiopia, IOM said.
The agency described the situation as “tense and volatile” and said its teams were continuing to monitor developments.
In May, Khartoum also accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of facilitating drone attacks launched from inside Ethiopia against several Sudanese states, including strikes on Khartoum and its airport.
Ethiopia has rejected allegations that it hosts RSF or Emirati forces, while the UAE denies accusations that it arms the paramilitary group.

Drone detected by MApN radars near Snake Island / Two Spanish F-18 aircraft were scrambled for monitoring

The Ministry of National Defense announced that on Thursday evening, at 18:27, a drone was detected 33 kilometers north of Snake Island.
Following this detection, two F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air and Space Forces, stationed at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base 57, took off at 18:41 to monitor the situation.
At 18:44, the authorities issued a RO-Alert message for residents in the northern part of Tulcea County, marking the third message in less than 12 hours.
On the morning of the same day, at 10:08, the Ministry of National Defense detected a group of aerial vehicles in Ukrainian airspace, and Spanish F-18s were also mobilized.
Additionally, on Wednesday evening, a RO-Alert message was issued for possible falling objects from the airspace, and an IAR-330 PUMA SOCAT helicopter was deployed for monitoring.
The air alert ceased at 00:00, with no incursions reported into national airspace.

Drone operators in the Houston area, including Brazoria County, are being warned to keep their aircraft grounded Thursday as a temporary flight restriction takes effect for President Donald Trump’s scheduled arrival in Houston.
The restriction is tied to presidential security and can cover a large area, meaning a drone flight that seems far from the president’s route could still violate federal airspace rules.

The temporary flight restriction is in effect Aug. 27 and extends into Aug. 28.
The restriction is tied to Trump’s scheduled Houston visit.

Violations can lead to FAA enforcement, including fines or certificate action.
Where and why are drones restricted Thursday?
The warning comes from the Brazoria County Constable’s Office Precinct 1, which said the FAA issued the restriction as part of the security measures surrounding the president’s Houston visit.
The restriction is listed under FDC NOTAM 6/7592. Temporary flight restrictions, or TFRs, are issued by the FAA for safety and security reasons and can apply to drones as well as other aircraft.
Presidential TFRs can cover a broad area, with a more tightly restricted inner zone. The exact boundaries, altitudes and active times are set by the FAA notice, so drone operators should not rely on simply knowing where the president is expected to travel.
What could happen if a drone enters the restricted airspace?
The FAA says drone operations are restricted within a TFR unless the operator has the required authorization. The agency investigates reported TFR violations, with potential sanctions ranging from warnings and fines to suspension or revocation of a pilot certificate.
That makes Thursday a particularly bad day to take the drone out for a quick flight and assume the airspace is clear. The safest move is to check before takeoff and wait until the restriction has ended if the planned flight falls inside it.
How can drone operators check the rules?
For drone pilots in the know, the FAA maintains a real-time list of temporary flight restrictions and advises pilots to check NOTAMs before flying.
Its TFR information can be filtered by state to see whether restrictions are active in a particular area. Rules include amateur remote pilots who may or may not know or be certified or registered.
What it could cost you to violate FAA drone flight restrictions

Deep Sea Scientists Hunting a Shipwreck Accidentally Stumbled Across The Ocean's Own Backrooms

More than 5,000 feet beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, scientists encountered a truly alien landscape that might just haunt your dreams.
It was 2017, and a team of scientists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were on the hunt for what they thought would be a shipwreck, perhaps containing a lost archaeological trove.
The remotely operated dive was part of an expedition aboard the Okeanos Explorer to map and survey the Gulf, led by marine biologist Diva Amon and echinodermologist Charles Messing.
The boat's sonar had picked up on some kind of structure about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) down. It had the hallmarks of a sunken ship: a large structure surrounded by some loose, smaller ones.
"Today is truly a day of exploration as we send the ROV (remotely-operated vehicle) over to this unknown sonar target," one crew member said as the team guided their ROV towards the wreck.
From the shadows of the Gulf's seafloor, an eerie landscape emerged.
A barren, sandy plain littered with rusted, white cubes – some busted open with the impact of falling, their plastic intestines and copper arteries exposed.
The oddly unsettling imagery feels a little like the ROV has passed through into the deep sea's 'backrooms'.
Zooming in on the scene, a metal tablet of text emerged, encrusted with sand and oxidized metal ooze.
Parts of this misplaced script can just be made out: "To Operate"; "For Personal Safety"; "Problem Solving…".
The dot points that follow each heading, however, were mostly illegible.
Then, looming out of the deep blue, the crew encountered the mother of all cuboids: a crumpled red shipping container, with a clutch of yet more white cubes spilling from its flayed side.
The cubes were a lost payload of white goods: fridges, freezers, washing machines. The inscribed tablet, a set of instructions for doing the laundry.
"I don't think the spin cycle is going to be working on it," one crew member commented, to an eruption of laughter.
A sticker on one of the appliances suggests it originated at General Electric's Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Other appliances were scattered nearby as well as further afield, forming what we had assumed was a 'debris field'," the official dive notes state.
"The container ID number was ITLU733016 [0], with a series of other identifying markings. The cargo appeared to include a variety of brands (RCA, GE, etc.) and was without packaging, suggesting that the cargo was going to be recycled."

But the container never made it across the waves.
"This is a bit surreal," a crew member mused as the ROV panned across the mod con graveyard.
"We are at 1.5 kilometers… in the deep sea. And here we are, moving through a field of just freezers, fridges, and washing machines.
"You think of the deep sea as a fairly untouched place, but this is just a reminder that it really is not. We still do manage to have an impact on this very alien area and ecosystem."
The NOAA team speculated the container could have come off a ship in stormy weather.
According to World Shipping Council data, a few hundred to over 1,000 containers are lost at sea each year, out of approximately 280 million transported.
In a recent report of the 2025 figures, they note that severe weather increases the likelihood that freight boats will drop some cargo as they encounter rougher seas.
Even without storms, warmer-than-usual ocean temperatures can increase wave energy.
"Most people out there probably don't realize how much stuff ends up in the ocean," a NOAA crew member said.
"The research has suggested that lost containers could take hundreds of years to fully degrade in the deep ocean if not more," another crew member added.
In the meantime, some animals have decided to call these bizarre benthic backrooms their home.
Corals and hydroids cling to the metal structures, their soft bodies rippling in response to the passing ROV.
A large fish even sheltered in the container's shadows.
The NOAA crew nicknamed the wreck 'Deep Clean'.
These kinds of ROV missions are part of NOAA's continuing work to explore the deep ocean.
ROV missions are operated by a crew of scientists and technicians aboard a ship on the water's surface, who remotely guide a submersible robot to the depths.
The ROV is connected to the ship by a long cable, through which commands are sent, and data (like the live video feed) is returned.
This is why we can hear the scientists reacting in real time: their voices are recorded along with the live feed.
This allows them to take important audio notes on what they are seeing in real-time (although this particular clip was compiled from the raw, live footage, after the expedition).
The live nature of these ROV feeds also offers us a window into the crew's reactions to some of the weird and wonderful things they find while exploring these uncharted waters.

Las Vegas billionaire Robert Bigelow has spent more than four decades and countless sums of money digging into UFOs and possible non-human intelligence interacting with humanity. Communicating with ‘them’ had driven much of his professional life.
