Summary

Every American now over the age of sixty-nine was almost certainly infected with wild measles as a child. Every American under fifty-eight was born into the era of further-attenuated measles vaccination and has probably never been infected with the wild virus. The boundary between those two populations is currently passing through the seventh decade of life.

The consequence is that measles in the elderly has never been observed in a substantial population whose immunity derives primarily from childhood vaccination, because until now no such elderly population has existed. Before vaccination, the question could not be studied either, since nearly everyone was infected by adolescence. We therefore have almost no direct evidence of what measles susceptibility, disease severity, or mortality will look like when vaccine-derived immunity reaches old age.

There are already reasons to ask what happens as vaccine-derived immunity ages along with the immune systems of the people who carry it. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that, in elimination settings, measles antibody levels decline after vaccination but do not show the same pattern after natural infection. For decades, that decline may have been partly obscured by subclinical boosting when vaccinated people encountered circulating wild virus without developing clinical measles. Elimination largely removed that source of exposure.

Measles itself raises a second question. Infection can erase a substantial portion of the pre-existing antibody repertoire, a phenomenon known as immune amnesia. In the principal study, children lost between 11 and 73 percent of their pre-existing antibody repertoire following infection. That work was conducted in children, whose accumulated immune histories were relatively short and whose capacity to rebuild immune responses was greater than it is in old age. What immune amnesia for other diseases after a measles infection would mean in a seventy- or eighty-year-old with a lifetime of accumulated immunity has not been studied.

There is another major uncertainty. The serological threshold commonly used to define measles protection rests on remarkably limited evidence, beginning with a 1990 study in which only nine people had pre-exposure titers at or below the proposed threshold. A subsequent systematic review found the evidence supporting that threshold to be scant and concluded that it requires further characterization.

There is another major issue. The serological threshold used to define measles immunity is based on nine people studied in 1990, and the field has formally acknowledged that it needs to be recharacterized. None of this predicts a catastrophe. It identifies a gap that becomes measurable around 2033, when the first single-dose cohorts reach sixty-five, and around 2054 for the two-dose cohorts. We do not have to wait that long to begin finding out what happens to vaccine-derived measles immunity as people age. That research is not currently being done.

Public health officials and scientists have assumed that childhood measles vaccination provides protection throughout the human lifespan, even though no fully vaccinated generation has yet reached old age. Once again, an assumption has hardened into an article of faith without the evidence needed to support it.

Federal Judge Strikes Down Law Protecting Children from Sexualized Drag Shows.

A federal judge has ruled against a Texas law aimed at restricting certain drag performances in areas where children could be present.

A federal judge has struck down a Texas law restricting certain sexually oriented drag performances in locations where minors could be present. U.S. District Judge David Hittner ruled that Senate Bill 12, passed in March 2023, was overly broad and could restrict constitutionally protected expression.

The law prohibited certain sexually oriented performances on public property or in the presence of people under 18. Hittner argued that the law’s reference to performances appealing to a “prurient interest” was too broad and could encompass otherwise legal entertainment. He dubiously cited the late Dolly Parton as an example, saying aspects of her appearance and performances could potentially be characterized as erotic under an expansive interpretation of the statute. Hittner concluded that people offended by such performances could simply choose not to attend them, despite the fact that the law targeted sexualized drag acts in public settings. The law had previously been blocked by another federal judge before Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) appealed the decision. Paxton, who is running for the U.S. Senate, condemned the latest ruling as a threat to children and Texas values and said he would immediately appeal.

The ruling is a significant setback for Texas Republicans’ efforts to shield children from exposure to sexually oriented performances, and could limit similar legislation in other states if judges continue to claim such laws are overly broad.

Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology: The Largest US Biometric Database You’ve Never Heard Of

A long-delayed, over-budget biometric program is set to become the largest centralized database of biometric data collected from Americans and foreigners who have visited the United States.

After being troubled by delays and budget concerns for nearly a decade, the Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology (HART) program will become the US government’s largest biometric database when it launches in September. The program has also been plagued by privacy concerns raised by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which has warned that HART has “gaps” in its privacy policies.

HART will be managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and will store and process biometric data such as digital fingerprints, iris scans, and faceprints that have been gathered by DHS and its various sub-agencies. According to DHS, government agencies may seek to access this data for national security reasons, law enforcement, immigration and border management, intelligence gathering, background investigations for national security positions, and certain positions of public trust.

While HART is set to complete “initial operating capability” in September 2026, the system is not scheduled to be fully completed until 2027. The system was originally announced in 2015 as a replacement for the legacy Automated Biometric Identification System (IDENT), which was originally developed in 1994 as a law enforcement system for collecting and processing biometric data from individuals apprehended by border security or immigration officials. In 2013, the DHS’ Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) began plans to replace IDENT with HART. HART was set to become operational in December 2018 but was delayed numerous times due to budget concerns.

Since the initial announcement regarding the transition from IDENT to HART, the GAO and digital rights groups have raised concerns about the government upgrading and centralizing its repository of sensitive personal information of millions of Americas.

In February 2020, DHS published its original HART Privacy Impact Assessment to “assess and mitigate any potential privacy risks.” While the system wasn’t yet active, DHS said they “anticipated potential privacy risks associated with the privacy sensitive system” and “sought to proactively develop appropriate privacy safeguards to be implemented” throughout HART’s development.

In September 2023, the GAO released their own report detailing what it saw as “gaps” in privacy policies required by the Office of Management and Budget. The GAO said DHS implemented only five of twelve privacy requirements. GAO noted that the 2020 privacy impact assessment was “missing key information,” including on whose data will be stored in the system and the partners with whom the system will share the data.

The GAO report also said the HART program did not have “assurances that partners that provide information to the system will appropriately retain and dispose of personally identifiable information.” GAO concluded by stating that until DHS addressed these “privacy weaknesses,” there is no assurance that the personal data gathered on hundreds of millions of individuals will be “appropriately protected.”

In August 2024, DHS released an updated Privacy Impact Assessment for HART in an attempt to “clarify and address points raised by external oversight bodies.” The assessment provided answers to some of the questions posed by the 2023 GAO report, namely whose information will be stored and with whom it will be shared.

“HART will contain personally identifiable information, including biometric data and associated biographic information, on U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and foreign nationals,” the assessment stated.

The report says biometric data held in HART may be shared with every agency of the DHS, including Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Secret Service (USSS), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), as well as other federal agencies such as the State Department, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Department of Defense (DOD). It also states that biometric data may be shared with “elements of the Intelligence Community (IC).”

Lawmakers Introducing Flock Bills Left And Right: What Would Each Do?

Lawmakers have introduced several bills to restrict Flock Safety cameras and automated license plate readers (ALPRs).

Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle opposed Flock cameras and introduced legislation to restrict them, although no one has introduced a bill as of Thursday that would completely ban them. All bills introduced thus far would place restrictions on using ALPRs at the federal and local level, and some lawmakers have floated the idea of outright banning these technologies.

Republican Tennessee Rep. Tim Burchett introduced the “Protection Against Mass Surveillance Act” in July, which would ban federal agencies from using automated surveillance. If passed, no agency would be permitted to “purchase, deploy, operate, access, or contract any automated surveillance system.”

Mike Fox, a legal fellow with the CATO Institute’s Project on Criminal Justice, told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the bill likely would not pass because congressional Republicans would face pressure from federal law enforcement agencies. He commended Burchett for bringing forth the bill, stating it would curtail the government’s ability to surveil the public.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Secret Service and other agencies accessed or used ALPR systems, which included commercial networks such as Flock. The agencies used facial recognition technology, AI-enhanced analytics, drones, biometric systems and camera networks.

A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report from December 2024 revealed that several agencies did not apply appropriate civil rights and privacy safeguards when handling citizens’ personal data.

“I haven’t seen any elected members of Congress come out in support of Flock cameras,” Fox told the DCNF. “But who has really come out in support of Flock cameras are other law enforcement agencies, and I would expect if Congressman Burchett’s bill moves forward, which I have a feeling it won’t, you’re going to get the Office of Legislative Affairs at [the Department of Justice] and the Department of Homeland Security, [who] are probably gonna be hugely opposed because this bill dramatically limits the ability of them to surveil the public, which is precisely why it’s such a good bill.”

While Burchett’s bill would place restrictions on federal agencies, Republican Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie announced plans to slash federal funding for cities and police departments using Flock cameras in an upcoming bill.

“I’ll soon be introducing a bill to withhold all federal funding for cameras used to track American citizens,” Massie said on Aug. 7

In April, Massie introduced a separate bill with Republican Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert called the Surveillance Accountability Act to require federal and local agencies to obtain a warrant before using ALPRs to track citizens. The bill would prohibit warrantless facial recognition scanning by federal and local law enforcement agencies in public areas and restrict the use of ALPRs, including Flock cameras.

The legislation would also allow private citizens to sue government employees for Fourth Amendment rights violations.

Republicans Reps. Keith Self of Texas, Eli Crane of Arizona and Andrew Clyde of Georgia introduced the Protecting Rights in Video and Equipment Acquired Discovery (PRIVACY) Act in July to require federal law enforcement to obtain warrants before accessing or querying data from state and local surveillance systems, like ALPRs, and would restrict the use of federal funds to purchase or install them.

The bill would limit law enforcement’s retention of data under a warrant to 30 days, unless the information could be used as evidence in a prosecution.

Self’s bill would only place restrictions on federal agencies and does not restrict what cities and local police can do with their own cameras. Massie and Boebert’s legislation applies to federal and local government.

No bills have been introduced thus far to outright ban these cameras, though Republican Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said they planned to introduce these bans. It is unknown when the bills would be introduced.

LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has an email address her department has declined to disclose – at least that is what former Republican Attorney General Mike Cox is arguing after the address was blacked out in public records.

Cox, also a former Republican candidate for governor, has amended his Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against Benson and the Michigan Department of State, accusing officials of dragging their feet on records concerning Benson’s dealings with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and improperly concealing an email address she allegedly used for government business.

The records fight comes as the SPLC itself is under federal indictment on fraud and money- laundering-related charges stemming from its use of paid informants inside extremist groups. Prosecutors allege millions of dollars in donor funds were secretly funneled to informants associated with groups including the Ku Klux Klan and white nationalist organizations – allegations the SPLC denies. Benson previously worked for the SPLC and served on its board of directors from 2014 to 2018, prompting Michigan Republicans to demand records and answers about what she knew about the organization’s activities and whether her relationship with the group continued after she became secretary of state.

Cox requested records in April concerning communications, meetings and coordination between Benson, her department and the SPLC, including records on personal email accounts. The department estimated the work would cost $10,309.94 and take about 10 weeks. Cox paid the required $5,154.97 deposit in May.

Then came a trickle of records. According to the lawsuit, the department produced just 30 pages on July 28, with its estimated completion period nearly over. Cox says several categories of requested records still have not been produced.

The Homeland Security Department will require random audits of paper ballots in the midterm elections, citing long-simmering concern that the nation’s largest voting technology companies use Chinese parts in their voting machines, according to a letter from Secretary Markwayne Mullin released Thursday.

Mullin sent the letter to the White House Transparency Task Force earlier this week outlining the dangers posed by Chinese components in American voting machines and the way that these components could be exploited by hackers or other malicious actors.

The letter highlighted longstanding concerns first raised in a bipartisan manner before the 2020 election, but which officials appear to have taken little action on in the intervening years.

“Voting machines with components manufactured by foreign adversaries introduce significant security risks,” Mullin wrote. “These vulnerabilities mean that malicious actors could potentially compromise election infrastructure at any stage of the supply chain, even before the machines are assembled or deployed.”

The secretary explained, “If a component is tampered with during manufacturing, it could serve as a point-of-entry for hackers, allowing for the possibility of synchronized attacks across multiple machines and jurisdictions.”

Addis Abeba – Sudan’s army said on Thursday it shot down a “hostile” drone that crossed into southeastern Blue Nile State from Ethiopian territory, marking the third such incident reported near the border in recent days, Sudan Tribune reported.

The military said the drone was intercepted on Thursday morning north of Sarkam. It did not identify the operator, specify the drone’s point of origin or say what its intended target was.

Ethiopian authorities had not immediately commented on the allegation.

The latest incident follows Sudanese authorities’ reports of two similar drone interceptions in Blue Nile State on Sunday and Monday.

Earlier this month, the Sudanese army also said it had shot down three FH-95 drones in North Kordofan State, following four other reported drone interceptions in the area in July.

On 24 August, Addis Standard reported that Sudan’s Defense Ministry said it had shot down a “hostile” drone over the Kurmuk area of Blue Nile State, near the Ethiopian border, alleging that it had been launched from Ethiopian territory.

Ethiopian authorities did not immediately respond to the allegation at the time.

The reports come amid intensified fighting across Sudan, including in Blue Nile, Darfur and Kordofan, as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) continue their conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Sudanese authorities have repeatedly accused the RSF of carrying out drone attacks against military positions and civilian infrastructure. The RSF has generally rejected such accusations, saying its forces are acting to protect civilians.

The Blue Nile region, particularly areas around Kurmuk near the Ethiopian border, has witnessed renewed fighting as the conflict spreads across Sudan.

The UN agency’s Displacement Tracking Matrix estimated that around 500 families were displaced as security conditions deteriorated.

Most of those displaced moved to other locations within the Geissan area, while others crossed the border into Ethiopia, IOM said.

The agency described the situation as “tense and volatile” and said its teams were continuing to monitor developments.

In May, Khartoum also accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of facilitating drone attacks launched from inside Ethiopia against several Sudanese states, including strikes on Khartoum and its airport.

Following this detection, two F-18 aircraft of the Spanish Air and Space Forces, stationed at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base 57, took off at 18:41 to monitor the situation.

At 18:44, the authorities issued a RO-Alert message for residents in the northern part of Tulcea County, marking the third message in less than 12 hours.

On the morning of the same day, at 10:08, the Ministry of National Defense detected a group of aerial vehicles in Ukrainian airspace, and Spanish F-18s were also mobilized.

NT passes voluntary assisted dying laws, legalising VAD Australia-wide

The Northern Territory Parliament has passed a bill legalising voluntary assisted dying (VAD) in the NT, with significant restrictions on accessing, and initiating conversations about, the practice.

The NT is now both the first and last Australian jurisdiction to legislate for VAD after a watershed 1995 law was overturned by the Commonwealth two years later.

A gag clause preventing medical professionals from starting conversations about VAD will remain in the legislation after government members voted down two attempts to remove it.

Member for Fannie Bay Laurie Zio also appealed to her CLP colleagues to consider the amendments, at one point reminding them they were not expected to vote along party lines.

"It is a conscience vote, nobody's going to get in trouble if you're voting one way or the other, please have a think about what your electorate wants," she said.

Attempts to remove the gag clause were ultimately rejected by a majority of government members, including Member for Blain Matthew Kerle, who had last week voiced support for the amendments.

The restriction is tied to presidential security and can cover a large area, meaning a drone flight that seems far from the president’s route could still violate federal airspace rules.

Where and why are drones restricted Thursday?

What could happen if a drone enters the restricted airspace?

The FAA says drone operations are restricted within a TFR unless the operator has the required authorization. The agency investigates reported TFR violations, with potential sanctions ranging from warnings and fines to suspension or revocation of a pilot certificate.

That makes Thursday a particularly bad day to take the drone out for a quick flight and assume the airspace is clear. The safest move is to check before takeoff and wait until the restriction has ended if the planned flight falls inside it.

How can drone operators check the rules?

For drone pilots in the know, the FAA maintains a real-time list of temporary flight restrictions and advises pilots to check NOTAMs before flying.

Its TFR information can be filtered by state to see whether restrictions are active in a particular area. Rules include amateur remote pilots who may or may not know or be certified or registered.

More than 5,000 feet beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, scientists encountered a truly alien landscape that might just haunt your dreams.

It was 2017, and a team of scientists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were on the hunt for what they thought would be a shipwreck, perhaps containing a lost archaeological trove.

The remotely operated dive was part of an expedition aboard the Okeanos Explorer to map and survey the Gulf, led by marine biologist Diva Amon and echinodermologist Charles Messing.

The boat's sonar had picked up on some kind of structure about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) down. It had the hallmarks of a sunken ship: a large structure surrounded by some loose, smaller ones.

"Today is truly a day of exploration as we send the ROV (remotely-operated vehicle) over to this unknown sonar target," one crew member said as the team guided their ROV towards the wreck.

From the shadows of the Gulf's seafloor, an eerie landscape emerged.

A barren, sandy plain littered with rusted, white cubes – some busted open with the impact of falling, their plastic intestines and copper arteries exposed.

The oddly unsettling imagery feels a little like the ROV has passed through into the deep sea's 'backrooms'.

Zooming in on the scene, a metal tablet of text emerged, encrusted with sand and oxidized metal ooze.

Parts of this misplaced script can just be made out: "To Operate"; "For Personal Safety"; "Problem Solving…".

The dot points that follow each heading, however, were mostly illegible.

Then, looming out of the deep blue, the crew encountered the mother of all cuboids: a crumpled red shipping container, with a clutch of yet more white cubes spilling from its flayed side.

The cubes were a lost payload of white goods: fridges, freezers, washing machines. The inscribed tablet, a set of instructions for doing the laundry.

"I don't think the spin cycle is going to be working on it," one crew member commented, to an eruption of laughter.

A sticker on one of the appliances suggests it originated at General Electric's Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

"Other appliances were scattered nearby as well as further afield, forming what we had assumed was a 'debris field'," the official dive notes state.

"The container ID number was ITLU733016 [0], with a series of other identifying markings. The cargo appeared to include a variety of brands (RCA, GE, etc.) and was without packaging, suggesting that the cargo was going to be recycled."

This is why we can hear the scientists reacting in real time: their voices are recorded along with the live feed.

This allows them to take important audio notes on what they are seeing in real-time (although this particular clip was compiled from the raw, live footage, after the expedition).

The live nature of these ROV feeds also offers us a window into the crew's reactions to some of the weird and wonderful things they find while exploring these uncharted waters.

The documents depict a foreign adversary determined to exploit America’s political divisions.

The most alarming material concerns the collection of Americans’ personal information.

According to the released records, Chinese-linked operatives obtained more than 220 million American voter records totaling approximately 45 gigabytes. The information reportedly included names, addresses, telephone numbers, political affiliations, and other details potentially useful for political targeting or voter registration activities.

On Thursday, Garland Favorito and VoterGA released more information on China’s involvement in US elections and particularly to thwart Trump.
