Mold, rodents found in Barack Obama Elementary School, RPS says
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond Public Schools says mold and rodents have been found in Barack Obama Elementary.
Superintendent Jason Kamras alerted families on Wednesday, Aug. 19 that, “following a recent HVAC outage, we found mold growth in the basement and on some furniture, which impacted the school’s air quality.”
Kamras said they’re reached out to professional contractors to clean the building, change air filters and remediate the mold, which is anticipated to be complete by Thursday morning.
Following the remediation, they will have an independent vendor perform an air quality test.
According to the release, if the test comes back negative, they will open the building and welcome teachers back to prep the classrooms for school to start on Monday, Aug. 24.
If the test is positive, more cleaning and remediation will need to take place, and they will not be able to get into the building until Saturday. If this is the case, the first day of school will be pushed to Tuesday, Aug. 25.
“As soon as we have the results of the air quality test, we will update all of you via ParentSquare. We will also publish the test results on the Obama website,” the release said.
Additionally, after reports were received of rodents in rooms, an exterminator has been hired to treat relevant areas.
Kamras said Obama Elementary will still be holding its back-to-school open house on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m., but it will take place outside.
“I sincerely apologize for the stress, anxiety, and inconvenience this news may bring to your family. Please know that your students’ health and safety — as well as that of our staff — remains my number one priority, and we will not re-enter the building until we are certain that it is safe to do so,” Kamras said.
