'The question whether cannibalism was brought into Australia by the circumcised hordes which formed the second migration, or whether it was practised by the uncircumcised peoples who preceded them, may be left to specialists to determine. The fact remains that cannibalism in its most revolting aspects is to-day confined to the tribes inhabiting the circumcised areas from the Northern Kimberley to the edges of the great Nullarbor Plain. When reproached for the horrible act, she turned impudently and said, “I only ate one, Jubinga ate three.”
'Last October a woman belonging to the Musgrave or Everard Ranges in South Australia came down with her group to Ooldea Water, and in spite of the closest attention, abundance of “white” food and “water,” and every encouragement to induce her to rear her baby, she ran away into the bush, doubled on her tracks, and gave birth to a little girl baby, which she choked and cooked and ate, sharing the meat with her little two-year-old girl child.
Guided to the fire by the brother, father, and mother’s brother (uncle) of the baby—all boys of tender years—I myself dug up the few charred bones of the baby from beneath the ashes. The skull had been broken into several pieces, and of the soft bones only a few charred cinders remained. As in the case of the Beagle Bay woman, it was not hunger but custom which incited to the deed, coupled with an overwhelming desire for the soft flesh and fat of the little baby.
'Just before, and for some time after, giving birth to a child a woman has to keep aloof from her husband, for, according to native law, she is unclean at that time; and when she has given birth to her baby it rests entirely with herself whether she eats the baby or allows it to live, her husband having no voice whatever in the matter. The shares of the meat may be a sister or brother of the baby, or both, or a sister of the baby’s mother, but no man appears to partake of the food of the new-born baby, as the mother being then “unclean,” the same stigma attaches to the baby.

Among the tribes whose remnants range around the edge of the plain nowadays there is scarcely one who has not at one time partaken of the flesh of a baby sister or brother, several amongst them having eaten the flesh of four or more of their own and tribal mothers’ new-born babies.

'It is the “fortune” of the game. When a “mob” travels to kill, it usually brings the bodies back to the camp to be cooked, when all in camp will share in the food; and then it will be the camp’s turn to watch after its own safety, for the tribe whose members supplied the “human food” will raid the camp in their turn and exact “meat for meat.”
'When two men set out to stalk their prey, they first put on mullgarra (murderers’ shirt) and, skirting contiguous groups, will make for a distant camp, amongst whose members will be some fine, fat young men or women. One of these they will stalk for a day or two until the victim is caught or they themselves are discovered and are turned into meat for the camp. If they are successful and happen to catch a fat girl or boy, they carry the meat for some distance along the track towards their own camp. Then they light a fire with the aid of their weapons, or throwing-stick—the owning method of firemaking being the principal one used in the central areas—and then, taking out the entrails or such portions of the meat as they may specially fancy, the portion is half-cooked and eaten, and the rest of the meat is carried back to the camp by another roundabout route.
'In other camps, again, “killing will take place within the camp.” A quarrel will be raised on some pretext or other. A woman or child or old man will be wilfully struck, and if the striker has the greater number of friends amongst the younger men the quarrel will go on until someone is killed, the victim being then cooked whole and distributed among “foes” and friends in camp. This appears to remove any feeling of injury held by the man’s near relatives. To confirm the good feeling the liver of the dead man will sometimes be removed before the body…'
