That presupposition that this has only been going on for the last two years is one of the discrepancies in perception which is making the gulf difficult to bridge.
Humans woke up in a world which already existed, and we created methods of understanding and interacting with that world in a manner which altered our environment for our benefit. We've been iterating upon that foundation for a very long time, and it has become immensely complex.
