COSCO, the world’s largest shipowner by fleet size, has strongly rejected allegations that its commercial vessels are being used to collect military intelligence for Beijing.

 

The Chinese state-controlled group issued a statement after Reuters reported that two senior US administration officials believe COSCO ships carry concealed signals-intelligence equipment capable of intercepting military communications near coastlines in North America, Europe and Asia.

 

COSCO called the allegations “totally unfounded” and “false”.

 

“All communication, navigation, safety and operational equipment installed on our vessels is used solely for legitimate commercial purposes, including navigation safety, ship-to-shore communications and emergency response,” the company said.

 

It added that none of its onboard equipment is used to intercept military communications or gather intelligence and said it reserved the right to take legal action to protect its reputation.

 

The two US officials did not identify individual ships or specify what equipment was allegedly being used.

 

Washington’s suspicion of COSCO is hardly new. As far back as the late 1990s, members of Congress raised intelligence and national security concerns over COSCO’s proposed lease of a terminal at the former Long Beach Naval Station, although the Clinton administration said the project did not pose a security threat.

 

Two decades later, US authorities forced OOIL to sell the Long Beach Container Terminal after COSCO acquired the Hong Kong shipping group, with the $1.78bn divestment completed in 2019 under a national security agreement.

 

Also in 2019, Washington sanctioned two COSCO tanker units over Iranian oil trades, triggering a dramatic spike in VLCC rates before the measures were partly lifted months later.

 

More recently, the Pentagon added COSCO to its list of companies it considers linked to China’s military, while USTR targeted Chinese shipping and shipbuilding with port fee measures last year, something that could return this autumn.

Argentina’s shale sand rush is quietly reshaping the country’s freight and shipping map

Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale boom is creating more than an energy revolution. Its demand for silica sand may provide the cargo base needed to revive long-delayed infrastructure projects, from railways and ports to Atlantic–Pacific connections. Fernando Torres, the co-founder of Trade Up Global Business Solutions, reports.

 

Vaca Muerta is creating something beyond oil and gas: cargo.

 

The shale industry requires millions of tonnes of high-quality silica sand, or proppant, transported more than 1,300 km by truck from Argentina’s Paraná River basin to Neuquén. It consumed around 5.5m tonnes in 2025, with demand potentially reaching 8m tonnes in 2026–27. Much of the supply chain still depends on road transport. That volume is forcing Argentina to confront a problem that has existed for decades: how to move large quantities of freight across a vast country when rail, waterways, ports and highways are not sufficiently integrated. The response is increasingly multimodal.

 

One example is the proposed revival of the railway connection to Quequén and Necochea.

 

The line has been without service since 2003, but four municipalities in southeastern Buenos Aires have asked the federal government to include the Ayacucho–Tandil–Lobería–Balcarce–Quequén corridor in the new railway concession framework.

 

The case illustrates the scale of the opportunity. Puerto Quequén handled more than 9m tonnes in 2025, yet received 281,824 trucks and no railway wagons. Vaca Muerta is now giving a long-dormant railway a potential new role in a broader freight network.

 

The same logic applies to maritime access. Today, vessels using Argentina’s river system reach the Atlantic through the Punta Indio Channel, a one-way route with operational constraints. The proposed Magdalena Channel would provide a more direct, bidirectional connection towards the Atlantic, potentially reducing dependence on the Montevideo area and the delays associated with Zona Alfa anchorage.

 

The economic impact is significant when port services, pilotage and waiting times are taken into account.

 

The significance goes beyond sand. A more direct Atlantic outlet could strengthen Argentina’s access to long-haul markets in the Middle East and India. Depending on the trade lane, Atlantic routing around the Cape of Good Hope could also provide an alternative to Red Sea passages affected by security risks.

 

Several of these infrastructure projects existed long before Vaca Muerta. What they lacked was a sufficiently large and predictable cargo base capable of supporting investment. Vaca Muerta may provide exactly that.

 

The proposed modernisation of the railway between Bahía Blanca and Añelo is a clear example. The corridor could initially serve the shale industry, but its strategic potential is considerably greater. The railway follows the historic route towards Zapala and could eventually extend to Pino Hachado, connecting Argentina with Chile and the Pacific.

 

If completed, that connection would make the Argentine section of the Southern Bioceanic Corridor a reality. AIMAS’s proposed 5F integrated railway model points in the same direction: a longer multimodal corridor designed to diversify beyond proppant into agriculture, mining and container traffic.

 

Infrastructure built around a single commodity remains dependent on that commodity’s production cycle. Infrastructure designed as a shared freight platform can serve agriculture, mining, manufacturing, containers, petrochemicals and international trade long after the original cargo has changed.

 

Argentina’s recent regulatory changes could also support that transformation. Decree 748/2026 broadened the RIGI investment regime’s definition of railway construction to include the renewal, replacement, transformation and development of existing infrastructure, as well as associated logistics nodes, dry ports, cargo transfer centres and railway yards. The decree does not guarantee that any particular railway will be built, but it potentially improves the framework for private investment in infrastructure whose value extends beyond a single project.

 

This is where Vaca Muerta becomes more than an energy story. Rail, ports, coastal shipping and trans-Andean connections should not necessarily be viewed as competing solutions. They can become components of the same logistics system.

Israel’s military ‘justice’ system is working exactly as intended

 

A handful of probes into massacres in Gaza are a smokescreen: Israel has convicted only two soldiers for harming Palestinians since Oct. 7.

 

Last month, the Israeli military announced the results of its preliminary reviews of five high-profile incidents that occurred during its campaign of mass killing and destruction in Gaza. The military had decided to open a criminal investigation into the January 2024 killing of Hind Rajab, six of her relatives, and two Palestinian Red Crescent paramedics; and another into the March 2025 killing of 15 medical and rescue workers in Tel Al-Sultan.

 

By contrast, in three other cases, the military concluded there was no basis for opening a criminal investigation: the killing of seven World Central Kitchen workers in April 2024, the attack on a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) convoy in November 2023, and the attack on an MSF building in February 2024.

 

This announcement might appear to signal a willingness on Israel’s part to investigate suspected crimes committed in Gaza. But an examination of Israel’s military law enforcement mechanism suggests something very different: Such announcements are far more likely to serve as a publicity stunt aimed at maintaining the appearance of accountability rather than delivering it. And by drawing attention to a handful of exceptional cases, the military directs attention away from the vast number of killings and suspected war crimes that have never been reviewed or investigated at all.

 

That publicity stunt matters because Israel has an obligation under international law to investigate suspected war crimes, and a failure to conduct genuine investigations may itself constitute a violation of international law. Indeed, Israel’s principal defense against international criminal proceedings is precisely that its domestic legal system is willing and able to address alleged violations.

 

Citing “Israel’s processes for review, examination, investigation, and proceedings under its national legal system” the state has invoked the principle of complementarity to argue that the International Criminal Court (ICC) should not interfere. In other words, the existence of a seemingly functioning investigative system helps shield Israel and its officials from international prosecution.

COSCO Denies US Claims Its Container Ships Serve As Beijing's Global Spy Network

 

China's state-owned shipping giant COSCO rejected a report published last week alleging that the company had concealed advanced surveillance equipment aboard its cargo ships to monitor US military communications near the coastlines of target nations, including the US.

 

Reuters quoted COSCO on Friday as calling the allegations "totally unfounded" and false.

 

What Reuters reported on Tuesday:

 

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the U.S. assessment of the Chinese program, said COSCO has a decades-long intelligence-collection partnership with Beijing. The arrangement allows China to collect communication signals from vessels and aircraft operating across Europe, North America and Asia, they said.

 

The advanced equipment aboard the ships is intended to enable China to gather information about "military communications technologies and encryption developments," one of the officials said.

 

The world's fourth-largest container carrier also told the outlet:

 

COSCO SHIPPING has always adhered to market‑oriented operations and compliance practices across all our global businesses

 

All communication, navigation, safety and operational equipment installed on our vessels is used solely for legitimate ‌commercial ⁠purposes, including navigation safety, ship-to-shore communications and emergency response.

 

The allegations surface just weeks before Chinese President Xi Jinping's expected Sept. 24 visit to Washington for talks with President Trump.

 

If substantiated, COSCO's alleged use as a signals intelligence operations would fit a broader pattern of Chinese gray-zone activity in which commercial infrastructure and civilian technologies are leveraged to advance state objectives.

 

Dr. Ryan Clarke of the CCP BioThreats Initiative wrote in a book last year that Beijing's strategy increasingly combines next-generation weapons with irregular and nonkinetic tools, including synthetic narcotics such as fentanyl and cannabinoids, what he characterized as biological weapons involving COVID-19, psychological influence through platforms such as TikTok, and other instruments of unconventional warfare.

Air crew restrain ‘racist, homophobic’ passenger

 

A plane passenger had to be duct-taped and zip-tied to his seat after he allegedly became abusive on a recent flight.

 

When the flight attendant intervened, the man then hurled the n-word at him and spewed anti-gay slurs, according to website TMZ.
