No longer a monarchy. What will they do with the "king"?

Will United Kingdom break up? Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland leaders to sign historic declaration; what we know so far

The United Kingdom may be heading for a break up as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are set to sign a referendum declaration.

Sep 13 2026

The United Kingdom may not remain “united” for long as top leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are set to sign a joint declaration on Monday to carve the UK into three parts, and pave the way for a new referendum on independence, a media report has said.

Political analysts believe this is the first time in the history of the UK that pro-independence governments are simultaneously in power in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The three-pronged alliance threatens to reshape the UK, posing a major challenge to new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Did Trump back break-up of UK?

Monday’s meeting comes after Burnham told MPs would authorise another Scottish referendum if there was a “clear consensus” in favour of independence.

Notably, two days ago, US President Donald Trump, during a visit to Dublin on Saturday, said he would “love” to see a united Ireland, and that Northern Ireland joining the Republic of Ireland would be a “very good thing”.

“How could that be bad?” Trump asked. The US president’s remarks come as nationalist leaders have increased pressure on the British PM Andy Burnham who has who has placed decentralisation of power at the centre of his agenda.

SNP leader and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney claimed Burnham was “facing the thought that he will go down in history as the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.”
