A black man has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of Tasia Fortune, a black woman who was found hanging from a tree sparking unfounded claims of a potential lynching case, fueled by leftwing media and Democratic politicians.

 

The tragic scene unfolded when Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four, was found hanging from a tree on August 3rd in Jackson, Mississippi. Now, her murder is being politicized and used by sick people to further the Democrats’ agenda.

 

Early in the investigation, CNN was quick to paint the incident as racial terror, with CNN’s Omar Jimenez reporting that “the raw imagery of a Black person hanging from a tree in the American South evokes a very painful history.” Meanwhile, as the Gateway Pundit reported, Jimenez omitted the fact that a person of interest, Tasia’s black boyfriend, who has since been cleared in the case, was already in custody.

President Donald Trump traveled to Ireland this weekend after attending the RNC Midterm Convention in Dallas this week and speaking at the Pentagon 9-11 Memorial on Friday.

 

During his trip to Ireland, Trump met with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin early Saturday and said he would love to see Northern Ireland unify with Ireland.

 

Northern Ireland has been under British rule for over 100 years.

 

Trump said, “I’d like to see a unified country. I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s going to happen eventually.”

 

The US President then traveled to Trump International Golf Club Doonbeg for the Irish Open.

 

Club members chanted, “USA! USA!” as President Trump walked through the bar and shook hands.

 

But, not every Irishman was happy to see the greatest American president arrive in country. Prro-Palestinian (anti-Jew) protesters met Trump in Doonbeg. They were carrying Palestinian flags.

He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Comet NEOWISE Rising over the Adriatic Sea

 

This sight was worth getting out of bed early. Just over four years ago, Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) rose before dawn to the delight of northern sky enthusiasts awake that early. Up before sunrise on July 8th, the featured photographer was able to capture in dramatic fashion one of the few comets visible to the unaided eye this century, an inner-Solar System intruder that has become known as the Great Comet of 2020. The resulting video detailed Comet NEOWISE from Italy rising over the Adriatic Sea. The featured time-lapse video combines over 240 images taken over 30 minutes. The comet was seen rising through a foreground of bright and undulating noctilucent clouds, and before a background of distant stars. Comet NEOWISE remained unexpectedly bright for over a month, with its ion and dust tails found to emanate from a nucleus spanning about five kilometers across.

This is the FIRST time on record in the satellite era (since 1966) that we have made it to September 12th without at least one Atlantic hurricane yet in the calendar year.

 

This is also the first time since at least 1941 that this has happened. Year-to-date ACE is lowest since 1941 as well. If we get through September 21st without any hurricane formations, it will be the first time since 1914 (there were none that season).

Train carrying Boris Johnson and other dignitaries 'is evacuated in Ukraine after Russian drone strike hits passenger service behind'

Boris Johnson was aboard a private train that was given an evacuation warning after a nearby locomotive was hit by a Russian drone attack.

The former British prime minister was travelling back towards Poland after attending a major security conference in Kyiv when the train stopped at around 5am amid a drone alert.

Mr Johnson is understood to have escaped unharmed, with an all-clear given shortly afterwards when no further drones were detected.

Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, who was also on board, said passengers on the train received an evacuation warning.

But it is not clear if anyone had to leave the train before it then escaped across the border to NATO territory in Poland.

He revealed that it was the train immediately behind them that was hit by the Russian drone.

'This wasn't our train [that was hit], but the one just minutes after us by the [Polish] border crossing,' said Bildt.

'It was evacuated as the [Russian] drone approached and no one was hurt.'

The incident came after another train travelling on the Kyiv-Warsaw route was struck by a Russian drone near the Polish border.

The locomotive was hit but, according to Ukrainian railway authorities, nobody was injured. The train was carrying 206 people, who were seen running in fear after the attack.

It was also carrying Günter Sautter, one of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's closest foreign and security-policy advisers, as well as security advisers from Britain, France and Italy, German MPs, diplomats and academics.

Mr Johnson and the other officials had been in Kyiv for the 2026 annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy, an international security conference where Western officials held discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's government about possible peace negotiations with Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said a Russian drone had also struck the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, one of the country's most important links with the European Union.

Footage circulating on social media appeared to show trucks on fire at the crossing, while Ukrainian media reported that a petrol station had also been hit. There were no immediate reports of casualties and the Polish military confirmed the attack.

The attack came just two kilometres from the Polish border, according to Ukrainian railway officials, raising concerns about Russian strikes reaching increasingly close to NATO territory.

Russian drones have increasingly targeted Ukrainian rail infrastructure, with Ukrainian Railways accusing Moscow of carrying out systematic attacks on the network.

James Webb Space Telescope discovers the rings of tiny solar system body Chariklo are changing

Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have discovered that the ring system of a tiny solar system body is even more interesting than they knew.

The object in question is Chariklo, which orbits the sun between Saturn and Uranus, at around 17 times the distance between Earth and the sun.

Despite only being around 155 miles (250 kilometers) wide, Chariklo, part of the Centaur family of asteroids, possesses two thick rings.

Though Saturn is the solar system body most famous for its rings, other planets also have ring systems, albeit less prominent. That includes Uranus, Neptune, and Jupiter.

 

However, Chariklo and the even smaller body Chiron, show that even the most diminutive bodies can develop rings.

Now, thanks to the incredible sensitivity of the JWST, scientists know that the rings of Chariklo are even stranger than their initial discovery in 2013 suggested.

The team, led by researchers from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC), began observing Chariklo with the JWST in Oct. 2022.

They used a technique called stellar occultation, which measures the decrease in light from a star when an object passes in front of it.

"By comparing JWST observations with those obtained during other stellar occultations over the last decade, we discovered opposite changes in the two rings: while the inner ring shows significantly higher opacity, the outer ring shows lower opacity," team leader Pablo Santos-Sanz of the IAA-CSIC said in a statement.

 

The changing rings of the asteroid suggest that it experiences more complex physics than previously thought. This is important because scientists had previously believed that small bodies had relatively stable rings.

"Our results force us to rethink how they form, how they evolve, and what mechanisms maintain their stability," Santos-Sanz said.

"The ability to detect these changes opens a new window for understanding the evolution of these systems and, possibly, that of other ring systems in the solar system."

The cause of these changes remains a mystery.

 

Another milestone for the JWST and Gaia

The research doesn't just represent an important step in our understanding of asteroids and solar system rings, but it is also an important milestone for the JWST.

"Achieving this required knowing with extraordinary precision the orbit of Chariklo, the position of the star, thanks to the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, and the trajectory of JWST itself around the L2 Lagrange point, a region of space located about 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) beyond Earth, away from the sun," team member Yücel Kilic of the IAA-CSIC said. "The JWST follows an orbit around this region that requires periodic corrections through station-keeping maneuvers."

 

During the occultation the team used in their research, Chariklo was traveling at around 5,600 miles per hour (2.5 kilometers per second) relative to the JWST.

This is incredibly fast by Earth standards, but relatively slow for objects racing through the solar system. This low speed allowed the rings of Chariklo to be resolved in unprecedented detail.

Astronomers currently rely on occultation to study Chariklo and its rings, as even the JWST isn't powerful enough to directly image this small and distant asteroid.

Flock cameras become election issue in races like Nevada gubernatorial battle

 

GOP Gov. Joe Lombardo and Democrat Attorney General Aaron Ford both support regulation of such cameras.

Gubernatorial candidates in Nevada have stressed the need to regulate artificial intelligence-powered automated license plate readers.

 

Their comments came late this week after a Nevada legislative committee voted unanimously at a recent meeting to draft a bill with legal guidelines for ALPRs, which include Flock cameras. There's a national debate over the technology’s security value versus privacy concerns.

 

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, a Republican, and Attorney General Aaron Ford, a Democrat running against Lombardo in the Nov. 3 gubernatorial election, have both expressed support for the regulation of ALPRs, although to varying degrees.

 

“There are no standards in place right now, so what this would do is establish those standards for our agencies to follow,” said Brad Wilkinson, counsel for the Joint Interim Standing Committee on the Judiciary, at an Aug. 25 meeting.

 

That meeting is when the committee unanimously passed an order to draft a legal framework around the use of ALPRs in Nevada. The technology, which automatically takes pictures of all license plates that pass the cameras’ view, can be used to track suspects in crime investigation.

 

The move to regulate ALPRs comes ahead of Nevada’s legislative session, which will start in February 2027.

 

Committee members acknowledged the variety of opinions on the technology’s use across the state, but agreed some form of regulation should exist for ALPRs. Currently there is no legislation specifically related to ALPRs in Nevada, according to Wilkinson.

 

“It seemed appropriate to at least have a vehicle to hash out those details, and if we’re able to come to some kind of conclusion about how we should be regulating the use of these cameras, then we can do that with this particular bill,” state Sen. Melanie Scheible, D-Clark County, said at the meeting. Clark County is Nevada's most populous county and is home to Las Vegas.

 

Plans for Nevada’s ALPR bill come as a national discussion on the topic has exploded in recent months. One major ALPR company, Flock Safety, has previously reported that its products are being used by law enforcement agencies across thousands of counties and nearly every U.S. state. More recently, over 100 cities have reportedly deactivated cameras or canceled contracts with the company after public backlash, including calls to vandalize the cameras, according to anti-ALPR advocacy group DeFlock.

 

Flock Safety and supporters of the technology have highlighted its use in flagging suspects in time-sensitive criminal cases. The company has frequently published stories of successful uses of its ALPRs for solving crimes on its website.

But opponents have pointed to a string of abuses of ALPRs by police across the country, with many public cases of officers using the cameras to track or stalk former personal relationships.

 

Back in Nevada, this year’s candidates for governor have weighed in on the issue.

 

Lombardo’s office said he supported the use of ALPR and other AI-powered camera technology by Nevada law enforcement, but said they needed regulations.

 

“These tools can strengthen public safety, but they must be accompanied by strong safeguards to protect the privacy and constitutional rights of citizens,” Lombardo’s spokesperson Drew Galang told The Center Square in an email.

 

Ford said he did not support the state’s current use of the technology.

 

“Flock cameras raise serious concerns about Nevadans’ right to privacy,” the attorney general said in an email to The Center Square. “Nevada needs stringent rules to protect against the abuse of Flock cameras, and as Governor I will work with lawmakers to pass into law these essential guardrails. Until Nevadans have these protections, I do not support the use of Flock cameras.”

Congress mum on federal deficit hitting $2 trillion milestone, again

Eleven months into fiscal year 2026, the U.S. government has added $2 trillion to the national debt, borrowing $168 billion during August alone, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

 

The federal government has collected $4.8 trillion and spent $6.8 trillion, generating a deficit already higher than last year’s with still a month of borrowing to go.

 

“Such extraordinarily high deficits are just one piece of our fiscal situation that is falling apart,” Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said.

 

“The gross national debt recently hit the sobering milestone of $40 trillion; we’re now spending more on yearly interest costs than on our national defense; debt held by the public exceeds the size of our entire economy; and trust funds for programs that tens of millions of Americans rely on face insolvency in less than a decade.”

 

As of Thursday afternoon, however, even the so-called Republican “deficit hawks” in Congress haven’t responded to the news, following a pattern of lawmakers largely disregarding soaring deficit spending.

 

Congress sidestepped the automatic spending cuts to Medicare and other programs that are triggered by unpaid-for federal borrowing by wiping $3.4 trillion from the Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) scorecard last November.

 

In March, the House tanked a balanced budget resolution. The resolution would have capped federal spending each year at the average annual revenue of the previous three years, with exceptions for emergencies.

 

U.S. lawmakers have introduced balanced budget proposals hundreds of times over the past 50 years and over 100 times since 1999 alone. Only twice in American history has any balanced budget proposal passed either chamber of Congress; the Senate in 1982 and the House in 1995.

 

“It is clear that we have delayed the hard choices for far too long,” MacGuineas said. “If lawmakers want to fix our laundry list of issues, they should come together and agree to a plan to target reducing deficits to 3% of GDP – half their current level – and get to work on shoring up our trust funds. If not, we risk leaving future generations with damage that can’t be undone.”

 

The newest CBO report shows that spending on Social Security rose 5% over the past 11 months, while spending on Medicare and Medicaid increased by 8% for both. Interest payments on the debt rose by a 12%, while spending by the Department of Veterans Affairs rose 14%.

Federal appeals court rules there’s no constitutional right to clean water

The full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned an earlier ruling by a three-judge panel and rejected constitutional claims from Jackson residents who say city officials exposed them to contaminated drinking water and misled them about its safety.

 

The en banc court ruled Friday that the residents cannot pursue their claims under the U.S. Constitution, saying the 14th Amendment does not establish a constitutional right to be free from exposure to contaminated municipal water or a right to receive accurate information from public officials about contaminants in the water.

 

The lawsuit was filed by four Jackson residents who say the city's water system exposed them to lead and other contaminants. They also say officials knew the water was unsafe but told residents it was safe to drink.

 

The court's ruling does not determine whether those allegations were true. The case was dismissed at the pleading stage, meaning the court accepted the plaintiffs' well-pleaded factual allegations as true for purposes of determining whether they had stated a constitutional claim.

 

The majority acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations, noting that Jackson's water system in recent years produced water containing lead, E. coli and other bacteria, allegedly violated the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and EPA regulations, left residents without water for weeks and resulted in numerous boil-water notices.

 

"Government officials are expected to be honest with their constituents, especially when the constituents' safety is at risk," the majority wrote.

 

But the court said that expectation does not create a constitutional right to accurate information from government officials about contaminants in municipal drinking water.

 

The majority also said the Constitution does not establish a right to be free from exposure to contaminated municipal water.

 

"These deprivations, while grievous, do not infringe upon any deeply rooted constitutional right," the court wrote.

 

The court said residents instead may pursue other remedies, including tort claims, political remedies and state or federal regulatory enforcement.

 

The ruling reverses a November 2025 decision by a three-judge 5th Circuit panel, which had found the residents plausibly said a violation of their 14th Amendment right to bodily integrity and allowed that portion of the lawsuit to proceed.

 

Judge James Graves dissented from the en banc decision. He said the residents should have been allowed to proceed with their claims and said the allegations could implicate the constitutional right to bodily integrity.

The case comes against the backdrop of years of problems with Jackson's water system. The U.S. Department of Justice and Environmental Protection Agency sued the city in 2022, saying there were violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Federal oversight and efforts to stabilize the system remain ongoing.

 

A separate legal battle over Jackson's water infrastructure also remains active.

 

The NAACP and two Jackson residents sued Mississippi officials in August 2025, saying the state discriminated against the majority-Black city in the distribution of American Rescue Plan Act funds intended for infrastructure improvements.

 

The lawsuit centers on more than $35 million awarded to Jackson through the state's Municipality and County Water Infrastructure grant program. The plaintiffs say state officials imposed additional requirements on Jackson that were not imposed on other communities and withheld funds that could have been used to address the city's water problems.

 

The case survived an initial attempt by the state to have it dismissed. In May, U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate ruled the plaintiffs had standing to bring the lawsuit and said the case would proceed, although the state was allowed to continue arguing other grounds for dismissal.

 

As of the May hearing, the plaintiffs said Jackson had received about $4 million of the more than $35 million awarded through the program, leaving roughly $32 million at issue. The state argued the plaintiffs' alleged injuries resulted from Jackson's longstanding infrastructure problems rather than the state's handling of the ARPA funds.

 

The NAACP's lawsuit presents a different legal question from the case rejected by the Fifth Circuit. The 5th Circuit case sought to establish constitutional protections concerning contaminated water and government information about water safety. The NAACP case says racial discrimination in the state's allocation and administration of federal water-infrastructure funding.

 

The 5th Circuit's ruling therefore closes one avenue of constitutional litigation for the Jackson residents, while the separate NAACP case over water funding continues in federal court.

Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Republican candidate for governor of Wisconsin, swam to safety after the four-seat Bonanza plane he was traveling in made an emergency landing in a lake, according to a statement released early Sunday.

 

“While returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner, the plane I was traveling in lost power as we approached the Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot made an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau," Tiffany said in the statement.

 

“After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat," he added.

 

Tiffany expressed his "deepest gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to our aid so quickly."

 

"They got us safely off the water and transported us to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where we received excellent care. Thankfully, both the pilot and I sustained only minor injuries," he said.

 

"God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side. An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is," he added.

Nuclear energy continues comeback as Energy Department directs loan to restart third shuttered plant

 

With no reactors under construction, the restarts offer the most immediate options to grow nuclear power in the U.S. Opposition to the restarts, and nuclear power in general continues, but it’s lost the clout it once had to block and delay projects.

The Trump administration has announced it is loaning NextEra Energy as much as $1.9 billion to support the restart of a nuclear power plant in Iowa.

 

The project is one of three projects underway to restart nuclear power plants that have been shut down. Besides support for two of those restarts, the Trump administration in its announcement last week said it has provided support for the development of new nuclear power plants and advanced reactor technology.

 

While opponents of nuclear energy had the clout to block or delay nuclear power development and construction of plants, President Donald Trump’s expansion of nuclear energy hasn’t been met with much pushback, and it’s generally enjoyed bipartisan support, suggesting that a decades-long opposition to nuclear energy may be fading into history.

Shift in opinions

 

The shift in public opinion toward increasing support for nuclear energy began during the Biden administration, according to multiple polls.

 

Nuclear energy as a share of total U.S. electricity generation grew from 2.4% in 1971 to 20.1% in 1992, and it’s hovered around that figure ever since. Only three commercial reactors have gone into service in the last 30 years, the latest being two new units at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia, which came online in 2023 and 2024.

 

The 1979 partial nuclear meltdown at Three Mile Island, in Pennsylvania, and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster near Pripyat, Ukraine, eroded public confidence in nuclear energy’s safety.

 

In 2011, the Fukushima disaster released large amounts of radioactive materia into the atmosphere and the Pacific Ocean. Though it caused no deaths, like the Three Mile Island incident, the accident helped buoy opponents’ arguments that nuclear energy is unsafe.

 

However, nuclear has seen public opinion growing more favorable in the several years as concerns about climate change make carbon-free electricity attractive, and the intermittency of wind and solar continue to drive up electricity prices and lower grid resilience.

 

A Gallup poll from April found that the percentage of Americans who think more emphasis should be placed on producing domestic energy from natural gas, wind and solar declined, while the percentage who feel the same about nuclear energy increased.

 

The 2026 National Nuclear Energy Public Opinion Survey released in May found that 77% of respondents favor nuclear energy, a record high. That was up from 49% in 1983. A 2025 Pew Research Center poll also found growing support for nuclear power.

Reviving older plants

 

The nuclear industry received a big boost from Trump, who has signed four executive orders supporting development of advanced nuclear reactors, reforming nuclear reactor testing, reinvigorating domestic fuel production and reforming the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

 

This is all in addition to supporting the restart of three reactors. The projects are likely to come online and add capacity to the grid before any more new reactors come online. There are currently no new reactors under construction, and the timelines can last decades.

 

The latest restart, the Duane Arnold Energy Center, in Iowa, was a 615-megawatt boiling-water reactor that ran for 45 years. It was shut down in 2020 after sustaining damage in a storm.

The plant also lost its power purchase agreements, which provided a predictable revenue stream. At the same time, it faced competition from cheap natural gas generation. Combined with the needed repairs from the storm, it was decided it didn’t make economic sense to keep the plant running.

 

The electricity demands of data centers have changed those economic calculations.

 

In October, Google partnered with NextEra on the restart to provide power for data centers. Now, the Department of Energy’s $1.9 billion loan provides the last piece needed to restart the plant, which is expected to be complete no later than the first quarter of 2029.

 

The Duane Arnold restart joins two other efforts to revive shuttered nuclear plants. The 805-megawatt Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert Township, Michigan, was shut down in May 2022. As with the Duane Arnold plant, Palisades’ power purchase agreement had expired, and it was facing competition from renewables and natural gas.

 

In late 2023, Holtec Nuclear Corporation began the process of obtaining licensing approvals to revive Palisades. And in September 2024, the Biden administration’s Department of Energy finalized a $1.52 billion loan guarantee to support the effort. Last month, Holtec began loading nuclear fuel into the reactor vessel.

 

The plant has further testing, inspections and Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals to get through. But if successful, it will be the first time in U.S. history a shuttered nuclear power plant has been restarted. Holtec hasn’t announced a firm date when the project will be complete.

 

The Trump administration is also supporting the restart of the Crane Clean Energy Center, which was formerly known as Three Mile Island Unit 1, in Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania. Microsoft signed a 20-year power purchase agreement, aimed at supplying the electricity needed for the company’s data centers. The Department of Energy provided a $1 billion loan for the restart in November 2025. It’s expected to come online next year.

Opposition remains

 

While public opinion has shifted in favor of nuclear energy, the revival of the shuttered nuclear power plants has its opponents. Though nuclear power provides reliable electricity without carbon dioxide emissions, climate advocacy and environmental organizations are among the opponents of the projects.

 

The Sierra Club launched a campaign to try to stop the Duane Arnold restart, arguing that it comes with safety risks, the reactor is outdated, and the wind and solar are cheaper. The group also opposed the Palisades and Three Mile Island restarts.

 

The Sierra Club isn’t alone in opposing the projects. Michigan environmental groups filed a lawsuit in state court to stop the project. After the suit was dismissed in state courts, the groups appealed at the federal level.

 

While nuclear energy is riding a wave of growing support that’s overcoming the opposition, accidents and mishaps grab headlines and can easily reverse the trends. The restarts provide the most immediate opportunities for growth, while bringing new reactors online exists on time scales lasting decades.

 

If the industry can maintain a solid safety record over that time, the portion of U.S. electricity produced by nuclear reactors may finally push past 20%.

Soda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, a 33-year-old Iranian blogger, has been sentenced to death after insulting the supreme leader.

 

The New York Post reported on Saturday that she has been held since March in solidarity confinement.

 

Shamsabadi allegedly photographed an area where a missile hit and sent the photo to a Persian-language media outlet outside of Iran, the Iran International outlet reported.

 

She was charged with corruption after allegedly engaging in “media and propaganda activities against national security” and working “on behalf of hostile governments," the outlet reported, citing Iranian outlets.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was traveling through Ukraine in a train when a Russian drone struck the railway line behind his train, according to a report by The Telegraph.

 

Johnson was making his way toward the Polish border when the attack hit the rail route.

 

The former prime minister has remained one of Ukraine’s most outspoken supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

 

His latest visit comes as he continues to argue that Western countries need to maintain pressure on Moscow and provide Ukraine with the military support needed to defend itself.

Back at it again with a long one, but can't help myself on the Space Academy topic.

 

Interesting to read some of the policy experts who have taken skeptical, and in some cases negative, public positions on the need for a United States Space Academy. People are certainly entitled to their opinions.

There are also those who believe we should not build a single spaceship or invest in technological progress until we solve every problem on Earth. That is simply not how you build a better future for our children.

I suspect, for some, the objection has more to do with the politics than the merits. So let me address a few of the common concerns and offer some rationale.

 

Global dependence on space is increasing at an astronomical rate. Weather forecasting, disaster response, precision navigation, communications, agriculture, national security and scientific discovery all depend on capabilities in orbit.

Connecting the disconnected and expanding access to knowledge is itself foundational to solving many of the world's problems. The data we will be taking in, whether from Earth observation or instruments like Roman, will answer questions we do not even know to ask today.

 

And there is no going back from the trajectory we are on. A decade ago, the FAA was overseeing barely more than a dozen commercial space launches per year.

Today, nearly a dozen U.S. companies are operating or developing orbital launch systems, chasing economic opportunity measured in the trillions. But the upside is far greater than economics.

Think about what we stand to learn scientifically, what technologies will have to be pioneered to explore out there, and how many of those breakthroughs will make life better back here.

Our new national space transportation policy calls for the United States to support more than 1,000 launches annually by 2030. Some already believe that is off by an order of magnitude.

 

America will certainly establish a permanent outpost on another world in the years ahead, and we are not alone in our ambitions. That outpost will become NASA's proving ground for where we go next. Mars.

And then we continue on. It is our destiny to harness more of the energy of our star, unlock more of the energy potential in matter, and venture farther outward, in the same spirit as the explorers of centuries past who discovered the New World.

And we have no idea how quickly that timeline could accelerate in a world transformed by artificial superintelligence, robotics, quantum technologies and additive manufacturing.

All of it is unfolding in the context of a great power competition where falling behind could materially affect our way of life and the trajectory of civilizations.

I do know the future will require a bright new generation educated and prepared for this environment. Many will serve in inherently governmental roles.

They will need specialized education in disciplines that barely exist today, including nuclear power and propulsion for space applications, before having the opportunity to continue careers across government or the private sector.

If you understand the increasingly important and contested environment above us, then a Space Academy is as timely and necessary today as the Space Force has already proven to be.

 

So what are the objections? It blurs the line between peaceful applications in space and the military.

This may be the weakest argument I have seen. NASA's history began with astronauts flying to space on ballistic missiles. Several Space Shuttle missions were, and remain, classified.

NASA Aeronautics flies repurposed U-2 spy planes for high-altitude research and F-15s for high-speed research. Breakthroughs pioneered through NASA aeronautics have benefited civil aviation and national security alike.

 

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, under the Department of Transportation, graduates students who go into industry, government and the military. Some have even become astronauts.

Three of the four Artemis II astronauts came from the military, as have many NASA astronauts throughout our history, and some have continued serving in uniform after their NASA careers.

 

NASA's mission is as peaceful as it is patriotic. We explore for the benefit of all humankind, but we go there under our flag. That mission would be impossible without the Guardians standing watch over the domain as we venture outward.

There is no contradiction in giving future civil, commercial and national security space leaders a common educational foundation, especially when our adversaries draw no such distinction themselves.

 

What about the cost? Congressional leaders and Governors from both parties have been reaching out and assembling potential funding packages.

It is interesting, I face questions during congressional hearings over whether we are investing enough in STEM education. We can absorb billions of dollars in canceled programs from mismanagement.

But investing in the education of the next generation, in a domain increasingly central to our scientific, economic and national security future, is somehow uneconomical?

 

We should look past the politics on this one.

Go back to 1963, when the world was captivated by the possibilities of space, and remember another iconic JFK speech.

He reminded us that we all treasure our children's future. Fittingly, he delivered those words at a university commencement.

It is time for another great American academy. A United States Space Academy worthy of the extraordinary adventure ahead.

Sea, Space and Cyberspace Are All Under Siege

The freedom of the global commons helped the world thrive economically and politically. China and Russia want to end it.

 

Most people don’t realize how profoundly their lives have been shaped by freedom of the commons.

The ability of goods, information and people to move with minimal friction through several crucial, shared domains — seas, skies, space and cyberspace — underpins our global economy.

It has facilitated world-changing booms in commerce and prosperity as well as the remarkable great-power peace that has prevailed since 1945. Freedom of the commons is at the heart of the modern world order. It is now, increasingly, under threat.

 

Freedom of the seas is under assault in waterways from the South China Sea to the Strait of Hormuz. A shifting maritime balance is challenging the US Navy’s role as guardian of the global commons.

Space is becoming more crowded and contested — an arena for rivalry in peacetime and perhaps violent conflict in war. Geopolitical tensions are simultaneously fracturing and weaponizing cyberspace as AI-aided tools of cyberwarfare intensify perils.

We’ve entered the era of the contested commons. Domains that once enabled connectivity are becoming battlefields, a change that’s putting the world’s prosperity and progress at risk.

 

How the Oceans Were Opened

The seas were the original commons. For most of history, they weren’t very free. Pirates ravaged merchant shipping. Countries commissioned privateers to despoil their rivals’ commerce.

In the Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in 1494, two great oceanic empires — Spain and Portugal — divided the world’s waters (as well as its newly discovered lands) between themselves.

 

The rise of free navigation required an intellectual revolution.

In 1609, the Dutch scholar Hugo Grotius published his tract Mare Liberum, arguing that the oceans belonged to no sovereign and that all nations should have access to the high seas, even as he acknowledged that states might control territorial waters along their shores.

Many powerful actors thought otherwise, so it also took a geopolitical revolution — the rise of Anglo-American supremacy beginning in the 18th century — to make that vision real.

 

Imperial Britain was an imperfect protector of maritime freedom. Blockade was the Royal Navy’s favored tactic in conflicts; the War of 1812 was essentially an American revolt against London’s heavy-handed naval hegemony.

But Britain did have a compelling interest in securing the sea routes that linked its home islands to a growing global empire and its dominant industries to the markets of the world.

By the late 19th century, the US was growing rich by trading on oceans pacified by British power. And when British primacy broke down in the 20th century, America stepped up.

 

In two world wars, Washington fought to subdue the German submarine menace to an open Atlantic.

After 1945, America put itself at the center of a world order made stable and prosperous by thriving trade. The US Navy secured sea lanes and protected free navigation in distant oceans.

When Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi claimed the Gulf of Sidra in the 1980s, when pirates stalked shipping off the Horn of Africa in the 2000s, or when China has challenged the openness of the Western Pacific, Washington has led the response.

 

By the early 2000s, the US enjoyed what political scientist Barry Posen called “command of the commons.”

Dominance of the oceans, air and space allowed the US military to roam the Earth’s far reaches; it provided the security and openness in which go-go globalization could occur.

Global gross domestic product rose (in inflation-adjusted dollars) more than 12-fold between 1950 and 2020. Global trade volumes increased 45-fold over that same period.

This would have been impossible had predators ruled the oceans, given that 80% of merchandise trade by volume travels by sea.

The territorial dispute between Moscow and Kiev remains the main obstacle to ending the Ukraine conflict, Jared Kushner, US special envoy and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, has said.

His comments came after he and fellow envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow and Kiev for high-level talks on ending hostilities.

 

Speaking via video link at the annual YES 2026 conference in Kiev on Friday, Kushner said that Moscow “wants to discuss a way to resolve” the conflict, but “the hardest issue is still territory,” partly because the question is to a degree dictated by a battlefield situation that remains highly dynamic.

“Seeing the advancement in the technology and the way that the battlefield has happened is, I think, beyond the expectation of both sides.

And I think one thing I’ve learned in politics is [that] any expert you talk to will give you a ton of ideas, but nobody has any idea what’s actually going to happen,” Kushner said.

 

Despite this hurdle, Kushner still sounded optimistic about the overall progress.

During earlier trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, he said, US, Russian and Ukrainian representatives “completed a deconfliction mechanism and a monitoring mechanism,” with the US military involved in the discussions.

 

Once the territorial question is resolved, Kushner said, that framework could provide “a real mechanism both to enforce it, protect it and oversee it.”

He stressed that much of the rest of a potential deal could fall into place if Moscow and Kiev overcome the territorial dispute. “I think the sides feel good about” the arrangement, he added. “And that’s actually real progress in that regard.”

 

Kushner and Witkoff travelled to Moscow earlier this month, where they held more than three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin before heading to Kiev.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described the Moscow meeting as “substantive, constructive and extremely candid,” saying Putin stressed Russia’s battlefield gains and the need to address the conflict’s root causes.

 

Following the talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow hopes trilateral negotiations with Washington and Kiev can resume in the “foreseeable future,” with Ushakov naming Abu Dhabi as Russia’s preferred venue.

Moscow has long insisted that a sustainable settlement is possible only if Kiev recognizes the “new territorial realities,” as well as commits to neutrality, demilitarization and denazification.

As Russian forces are making progress on the battlefield, Kiev still clings to less than 15% of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

In brief: Unmanned aerial vehicles struck key Russian petroleum and chemical production hubs early Sunday morning, Sept. 13, targeting the industrial cluster in Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, and igniting a fire at an oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban, Krasnodar Krai.

Nizhnekamsk houses some of Russia’s largest refining and petrochemical enterprises, including Tatneft’s TANECO refinery, TAIF-NK, and synthetic rubber producer Nizhnekamskneftekhim. In Slavyansk-on-Kuban, drone impacts triggered a blaze at the local refinery, which had previously caught fire during strikes in June.

 

Drones targeted the major petrochemical and oil refining cluster of Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan and sparked a fire at an oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban, Krasnodar Krai.

In Nizhnekamsk, situated roughly 1,200 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier, residents reported low-flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) overhead followed by a series of heavy blasts and anti-aircraft artillery fire near the industrial district, according to independent Russian outlet Astra and Ukrainian monitoring channel Exilenova+.

 

Russia’s Unified State System for Prevention and Elimination of Emergency Situations (RSChS) issued regional drone alerts across Tatarstan overnight.

Local officials acknowledged an incident within the industrial zone, with regional official Radmir Belyaev confirming an ignition “at one of the city’s enterprises,” widely reported by monitoring groups to be Tatneft’s TANECO refining complex.

 

Nizhnekamsk houses one of the Russian Federation’s most critical fuel and chemical manufacturing hubs.

The complex includes Tatneft’s TANECO facility, ranked among Russia’s five largest oil refineries with an annual crude processing capacity exceeding 16 million metric tons, alongside the adjacent TAIF-NK refinery, which processes more than 7 million tons of crude petroleum and gas condensate annually.

The industrial hub also hosts Nizhnekamskneftekhim, a Sibur subsidiary and one of Europe’s largest synthetic rubber and polymer producers, which holds a dominant domestic market share in synthetic rubber and industrial plastics utilized across civilian and defense manufacturing sectors.

 

Fire ignites at Slavyansk-on-Kuban refinery

Concurrently, overnight drone attacks struck the Slavyansk-on-Kuban oil refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar Krai, triggering a blaze at the facility, Astra reported.

Geolocated video footage published by local residents on social media showed a large fire and an orange glow illuminating the night sky above the plant. Regional authorities have not released an official assessment of the structural damage or casualties.

The Slavyansk refinery, operated by Slavyansk ECO, has an annual processing capacity of approximately 4 million tons of crude oil.

The facility had previously halted processing operations following Ukrainian drone strikes in late April and June that caused fires in the plant’s atmospheric distillation units.

 

Subsequently, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (HUR) confirmed that operators from the Department of Active Operations and the Department of Unmanned Systems of the Main Intelligence Directorate, as part of a joint deep-strike operation with the Ukrainian Defense Forces, struck the “Slavyansk-ECO” oil refinery in the city of Slov ’yansk-on-Kuban in the Krasnodar Krai.

“As a result of the operation, a key oil refining facility and the company’s tank farm – which fuel the criminal war against Ukraine – were struck,” HUR stated.

 

Thick smoke and the glow from the major fire at the Russian oil refinery are visible from dozens of kilometers away.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also reported that units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck the “Slavyansky” oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban, Krasnodar Krai, and the “Taneco” oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, as well as command posts and storage facilities for the Russian invaders’ attack drones.

 

Expanding campaign against Russian energy and chemical sectors

The overnight strikes in Tatarstan and Krasnodar Krai follow an intensified campaign by Ukrainian forces against Russian defense manufacturing, fuel distribution networks, and chemical plants over the weekend.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces struck two major chemical industry enterprises in Russia’s Samara and Perm regions, alongside targets in the Black Sea and occupied territories.

 

In the Samara region, overnight drone strikes on Saturday ignited a blaze at the KuibyshevAzot chemical facility in Tolyatti, which produces roughly 50% of Russia’s caprolactam and 75% of its industrial tire cord.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine subsequently confirmed a direct strike on the nearby Tolyattikauchuk plant, which produces synthetic rubbers, monomers, and high-octane gasoline additives essential for manufacturing solid rocket fuel used in tactical and ballistic missiles.

 

In the Perm region, long-range drones targeted the Azot plant in Berezniki on Friday, Sept. 11, which manufactures nitric acid and ammonium nitrate – critical industrial precursors for military-grade explosives.

Simultaneously, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) conducted an operation against five military and logistics installations in Taganrog, Rostov region, striking a first-person-view (FPV) drone production workshop, two UAV warehouses, an oil storage tank, a P-18 radar station, and a Pantsir-S2 air defense system.

 

Ukrainian long-range drones have targeted Russian oil refineries over 70 times since early 2026, significantly reducing domestic fuel output and compelling at least 17 Russian regions to introduce fuel sales rationing.

Yemeni army rosters filled with 'ghost names,' leaving Mocha vulnerable to Houthi takeover - report

Yemeni battalions stationed in the port city of Mocha were left largely unprepared to fend off a takeover by the Iran-backed Houthis on Thursday, with much of the force’s roster filled with “ghost names” of soldiers that did not actually exist, according to a Saturday CNN report.

A Western source with knowledge of Yemeni anti-Houthi operations told CNN that the “ghost names” received salaries, making the army seem much stronger than it was on paper. In actuality, the army was only around 20% of what it appeared to be, according to the source.

Blame for the apparent lack of military resistance to the Houthi takeover has been split between Yemeni leaders, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, with multiple sources telling CNN that different parties were responsible for the failure.

One regional CNN source described the fall of Mocha as “a Saudi-American f*** up of epic proportions” caused by delayed decision-making by Washington and Riyadh.

IDF warns of rising West Bank tensions despite low terror levels, pushes for preventive operations

Despite the fact that terror levels in the West Bank are very low, the lowest since 2011, security officials warned on Sunday that Hamas headquarters in Turkey, Gaza, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, and other locations will likely attempt to advance terror plots targeting Israelis and IDF soldiers.

The low level of terror activity is attributed to combined operations by the Judea and Samaria Division, commanded by Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency), Israel Police and Border Police.

Ahead of the holidays, the Judea and Samaria Division carried out extensive preventive operations, targeting not only suspects involved in terror activity but also incitement hubs, in an effort to minimize the potential for attacks in the area.
