Validate the fear first, then give the child a sense of control. Telling a child "there's nothing to be scared of" often backfires — it can make them feel dismissed and stop sharing their worries. Instead, acknowledge how scary it feels, then gently reinforce safety.

Practical strategies that work well:

Use "monster spray" or a charm. Fill a spray bottle with water and call it monster repellent; let the child spray dark corners. Alternatively, sprinkle glitter on a stuffed animal and pretend it's a protective charm. This taps into a child's magical thinking and gives them an active role.

Do a brief, one-time check together. Look under the bed or in the closet with your child, but don't make it a nightly ritual — that can reinforce the idea monsters might be there.

Add a nightlight and a comfort object. A dim light (non-blue) and a favorite blanket or stuffed animal provide a tangible sense of security.

Make the dark fun during the day. Play flashlight tag, build a fort, or have a glow-stick dance party so the dark stops feeling threatening.

Teach simple calming tools. Practice slow breathing (in for 4, out for 7) and positive self-talk like "I am safe" during the day so they're ready at night.

Limit scary media. Keep frightening shows, movies, and stories out of the picture, as they feed the fear.

Praise bravery. Celebrate small steps — "I'm so proud you stayed in your room" — to build confidence over time.

The key principle: take the fear seriously, don't argue logic into a child, and gradually help them feel in charge of their own safety.

Background

Hassan al-Banna founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in 1928 as an Islamist social and political movement opposing British colonial influence and promoting a return to Islamic governance. By the late 1930s it had grown rapidly and developed paramilitary structures. It shared with the Nazis a hostility toward Britain, Zionism, and Jews, plus an attraction to disciplined mass organization. It rejected core Nazi racial doctrine, however, because it contradicted the Islamic idea of the umma.

Funding and intelligence links: Some German money appears to have reached the Brotherhood indirectly before 1939, routed through the Deutsches Nachrichtenbüro in Cairo and through al-Husseini (who himself received funds from German and Italian intelligence). One British source claimed more than £5,000 in 1936 alone. Historian Francis Nicosia found that Berlin generally avoided substantial support for Arab nationalists before 1938 so as not to damage relations with Britain. Al-Banna denied receiving German funds. Any such relationship largely ended with the outbreak of war.

Organizational imitation: British intelligence reported in 1945 that al-Banna had studied Nazi and Fascist organizations and created specialized units analogous to the Brownshirts and Blackshirts (the MB’s “Secret Apparatus”). The Brotherhood also circulated Arabic excerpts from Mein Kampf and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Public stance during the war: Early on, the MB showed some pro-Axis sympathy because Germany was fighting the British. A 1942 British report noted that while the group copied fascist organizational forms, it had “no particular sympathy for Nazi ideology.” Brotherhood newspapers condemned Nazi racism and Italian chauvinism. By 1942 the organization was receiving British funding. Al-Banna later denounced Nazism and Fascism as tyrannical systems that collapsed under their own weight.

The Mufti as the main bridge

Al-Husseini was not a formal MB member but maintained close personal and political ties with al-Banna from the late 1920s. He fled to Berlin in 1941, met Hitler on 28 November 1941, and became the most prominent Arab collaborator with the Nazi regime.

He:

Broadcast Arabic propaganda from Berlin urging jihad against Jews and the British.

Helped recruit Bosnian Muslims into Waffen-SS units such as the 13th SS Handschar Division, which committed atrocities against Serbs and Jews.

Culture Minister Olivia Grange, who led the delegation, shared a photo on X of herself holding the document aloft, captioned: “The petition has been filed.” King Charles III was not present at the handover. British media reported he was on vacation at the time, though Buckingham Palace said it had worked closely with the Governor General of Jamaica to ensure the petition was properly lodged.

Why the date is no coincidence

The day before, on Sunday, September 6, the delegation had taken part in a church service in south London under the theme of “remembrance, justice and repair,” ahead of the formal filing the following day. This timing is no accident: September 6 commemorates the 1781 departure of the slave ship Zong, aboard which more than 140 enslaved Africans were thrown into the sea so their owners could collect an insurance payout. That crime, unpunished for 245 years, now stands as the symbol of a justice the diaspora refuses to let fade into oblivion.

Every September we mark Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. This year it’s more personal for me.

More than 330,000 American men this year will hear the words we did last spring when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. By the time we found it, it had already spread to my bones.

When prostate cancer is caught early, the five-year survival is close to 100%.

So have the conversation with your doctor. Don’t put it off.

If you're at average risk, that conversation should start around 50, and the guidelines now say screening every 2 to 4 years. If you're a Black man, start it at 45 or earlier. You are nearly 70% more likely to get this disease and 2 to 4 times more likely to die from it. Which is an outrage in the richest country in the world.

If your father or your brother had prostate cancer, start the conversation at 45, and even earlier if more than one of them did.

I am deeply grateful to the doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who helped to control my cancer and who continue to take such good care of me. Their skill, dedication, and compassion mean so much. The radiation treatment from last fall worked as intended, and I continue to do the things I care about, like finishing my memoir.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and continues to keep me and my family in your prayers. We appreciate every single one of you.

It’s my hope and prayer that by sharing our experience and being part of this important conversation, we can help save lives. Talk to your doctors. Ask the hard questions. Do it for yourself, and do it for the people who love you.

Well, from my experience starting in 2023, they first try to create the consensus of "that motherfucker isn't real" and was just a sockpuppet of theirs. Then in 2024 they pivoted to pretending to be good and innocent and try to set that person up to attack others that they were copying. What does this image look like to you? Many see a giraffe facing right, with neck stretched high and long legs mid-stride (but some may see a squirrel instead). The featured image shows LDN 1295, also called the Giraffe Nebula, in the constellation of the mythical queen of Aethiopia (Cassiopeia). It is an object in the Lynds Catalogue of Dark Nebulas, compiled in 1962 by American astronomer Beverly Lynds, a pioneer for women in astronomy and astrophysics. Dark nebulas are interstellar clouds of dust and gas that block the visible light of the stars behind them. These nebulas are often faint and challenging targets for astrophotographers. Why do we see animal shapes and faces in nebulas, clouds, and pretty much everywhere? It is due to pareidolia, our tendency to look for familiar patterns. Pareidolia may provide animals with an evolutionary advantage, for example in identifying (and avoiding) predators.
