Europe Gas Hits Three-Year High as Traders Race to Fill Storage

Sep 8, 2026 (Bloomberg) –European natural gas prices hit a fresh three-year high as traders race to fill fuel storage facilities ahead of winter, while awaiting details of an Iran-Oman deal on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Benchmark futures rose as much as 3.4% Tuesday to the highest since Jan. 2023. While Tehran said an accord is imminent and will include a temporary safe route, it remains unclear for traders how the US will respond after striking Iranian tankers over the weekend, and the risk of ship attacks remain high.

Oil also advanced after strikes on Saudi Arabia’s energy sites injected more uncertainty across markets.

Europe needs higher gas prices in order to attract more seaborne cargoes to its shores, but with less than a month left until the heating season, the region’s inventories are still lagging behind. Storage is now just 67% full, compared with a seasonal norm of 83%.

“As the European gas market heads into winter with unusually low inventories, its flexibility to absorb further supply or demand shocks is limited,” Timera Energy analysts wrote in a note. “Europe is pricing up to outcompete Asia for marginal LNG.”

In Germany, home to the continent’s biggest storage facilities, sites are only around half full. The country could technically reach its national target for filling them by Nov. 1 if customers make sufficient use of the capacity they have booked, according to gas storage group INES. But if there are extreme cold spells during winter, a fill level of about 77% would not be sufficient, it warned.

Meanwhile, an LNG tanker that loaded in Qatar early last month has sailed through the Strait of Hormuz and is signaling Pakistan as its next destination, the first visible exit of the country’s super-chilled fuel via the waterway since July. A wider resumption of LNG flows from the Persian Gulf would bring relief to price-sensitive buyers, particularly in South Asia, amid shortages and power blackouts.

Dutch front-month futures, Europe’s gas benchmark, rose 2.2% to €74.95 a megawatt-hour by 12:25 p.m. in Amsterdam.

Rising gas prices are also bolstering electricity costs, with gas-fired plants often setting power prices. That is particularly relevant for Germany, where fading solar output during the winter months will increase reliance on the country’s fossil-fuel fleet. German power futures for 2027 climbed as high as €126.62 per megawatt-hour, their highest since October 2023, according to EEX data.

EXCLUSIVE — DALLAS — With an eye toward energizing the GOP's MAGA base, the Republican National Committee (RNC) on Tuesday announced the speaking order and times of this week's first-ever GOP midterm convention, and President Donald Trump will be the Primetime headliner both nights.

According to the list, which was shared first with Fox News Digital on the eve of the convention, the president will deliver Wednesday's keynote address, which is tentatively scheduled to start at 9 p.m. ET.

Trump will return on Thursday evening at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas to close out the convention, with remarks after Vice President JD Vance gives the second night's keynote speech.

With less than two months to go until the midterm elections, Trump and Republicans are gathering in Texas for their historic confab as they aim to energize the party's base ahead of key races that will determine whether the GOP keeps control of Congress. Supporters of the president traditionally do not turn out in robust numbers when Trump is not on the ballot.

Democrats and Republicans traditionally hold large nominating conventions during presidential election years. But Trump last year floated the idea of a similar gathering ahead of the midterms to showcase the signature policy achievements he and Republicans in Congress have produced over the past two years.

The president called the convention "a truly Historic Event" and "a RALLY like none other!" when he announced it earlier this summer.

The convention comes as Republicans face energized Democrats and stiff political headwinds as they defend their slim House and Senate majorities in the midterms.

But Republicans are expected to paint a contrast, as they use the convention to spotlight the Democrats' leftward lurch and tie the entire Democratic Party to far-left and socialist proposals.

"The midterm election is about the future of our country. President Donald Trump and Republicans are fighting to launch the golden age of America while extreme liberal Democrats want to tear this country apart and create a liberal failed state with their out-of-touch and anti-American views," RNC chair Joe Gruters argued in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Gruters emphasized that "the choice is clear in November and the American people will reject these liberal policies and deliver historic wins for Republicans across the country."

The DNC, which remains in debt and decided against holding a similar convention, sees the GOP confab as a chance to blast Republicans.

Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio, who is in a pitched fight with former longtime Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, will also address the crowd, as will Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia, the Republican challenger taking on Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in swing state Georgia.

Former Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, who is hoping to flip a Democrat-held open seat in the key Great Lakes battleground as he runs against far-left Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, speaks on Thursday evening.

In the battle for the House, where the GOP holds a razor-thin majority, incumbents and candidates in competitive races will also be in the speaking spotlight.

They include Reps. Monica De La Cruz of Texas, Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin, Rob Bresnahan of Pennsylvania, and candidates Mike LiPetri of New York and Jay Feely of Arizona on Wednesday night.

Among the House Republican incumbents and candidates in close races speaking on Thursday are Reps. Ryan Mackenzie of Pennsylvania and Mike Lawler of New York, along with nominees Greg Cunningham of New Mexico, Derrick Merrin of Ohio and Eric Flores of Texas.

Speaker Mike Johnson will speak on Thursday evening, according to the RNC schedule.

Johnson's Senate counterpart, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota), is notably absent from the list of speakers released by the RNC. But a source familiar with the planning tells Fox News Digital that Thune will be in Dallas, with a full schedule that includes helping Senate candidates fundraise.

“An underwater drone operated by U.S. forces malfunctioned more than a day ago,” U.S. Navy Captain Tim Hawkins told CNBC in a statement shared by U.S. Central Command.

The drone “was surveying regional waters in support of ongoing operations,” Hawkins said, adding, “U.S. operations in area waters continue.”

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had boasted earlier Tuesday that it trapped and captured “one of the most modern, intelligent, unmanned submarines of the American terrorist army at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz,” according to a translated post from Iranian state news outlet Fars.

Fars later posted videos and images purporting to show the vessel out of the water.

But Hawkins’ statement insisted that the drone was hardly a crucial piece of cutting-edge military tech.

“The defective drone was an older model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried any classified sonar or radar equipment,” the captain’s statement said.

Iranian media outlets described the sub as a Dive-LD, an autonomous undersea vehicle developed by U.S. defense contractor Anduril. They cost $2.5 million each, DefenseScoop reported in 2024.

The development came three days after the U.S. and Iran traded new attacks in the Persian Gulf, rekindling kinetic hostilities in the region even as the Trump administration shifts its strategy toward defeating Tehran economically.

Centcom said it struck three Iranian crude oil carriers in retaliation for Guard firing ballistic missiles at two Navy warships.

The U.S. military later struck multiple Iranian tankers in response to new attempted missile attacks on a Navy warship, MS NOW reported Tuesday afternoon, citing an unnamed U.S. official. Centcom did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on the report.

The spotlight on the watercraft offers the latest example of the U.S. military’s increasing dependence on autonomous tech to fight the war in the Middle East.

This summer, unmanned boat startup Saronic used one of its drone vessels to rescue crew from a helicopter downed in the Hormuz Strait. Saronic’s boats were later used in a strike on an Iranian submarine and ship facility.
