Trump blames fuel price spike on Zelensky

US diesel prices have hit a new record, soaring past $6 per gallon this week

US President Donald Trump has blamed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for the ongoing diesel price shock, saying it was a result of Kiev’s attacks on Russian refineries.

The national average price of diesel hit more than $6 per gallon on Friday, up from approximately $5.85 last week. The price has climbed some 60% compared to the same period last year, when diesel fuel cost some $3.71 per gallon. Market experts have mainly linked the hike to the conflict in the Middle East and the reignited hostilities between the US and Iran, which have prompted a renewed rise in crude oil prices.

Trump, however, insisted that this was not the case, telling reporters while on a visit to Ireland that the diesel price spike was actually related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The US president said he had already raised the issue with the Ukrainian leader and told him to stop attacking diesel production in Russia.

“Zelensky has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia. Let him go after targets, but not diesel fuel, because he’s causing a shortage of diesel,” Trump asserted, adding that “this isn’t done by the Middle East.”

In recent months, Ukraine has repeatedly attacked oil refineries and other petroleum installations in Russia. While the strikes have caused fuel shortages and price hikes across multiple Russian regions, the attacks have primarily affected gasoline, while the diesel supply has remained largely undisrupted.

To battle the shortages, the Russian government introduced a temporary ban on exporting gasoline and diesel, as well as other petroleum products. The diesel exports ban was first introduced early this year and extended to gasoline producers in July. The diesel ban is currently in effect until the end of September, yet it is likely to be extended further.

Diesel fuel has been more expensive in the US than gasoline for decades and has previously shown tendencies to rise in price at a faster pace. It is integral to the food supply chain, since it is used to power agricultural machines as well as the cargo trucks and trains which deliver the produce. The cost of fuel accounts for between 15% and 30% of the total cost of food in the US, according to various estimates, and the ongoing hike is bound to affect consumer prices.

The First Denisovan Forearm Bone Ever Discovered Fills a Key Knowledge Gap in Our Understanding of This Archaic Hominin

The first Denisovan radius ever discovered is offering scientists a rare new glimpse into one of humanity’s most mysterious ancient relatives, whose scarce fossil remains have left much of their story unknown.

In a recent paper published in Nature, the team described these unique remains, discovered in the Bianfu Cave in Southwest China, an important Paleolithic site.

While Denisovans have been discovered throughout Asia, this part of China has been a major gap in the record.

Therefore, this site provides important information about what a complete Denisovan body would have been like, as well as intricate details about regional skull variations among these archaic hominins.

A New Technique

The researchers behind the new study developed a novel technique to make the most of the more than 60,000 bone fragments recovered from Bianfu Cave.

While Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) has become an important tool in working with hominin fossils, using it on a find of this scale would be inefficient and expensive.

Therefore, the team developed a morphological pre-screening and ZooMS identification technique, which greatly increased their efficiency in recovering hominin fragments from the site and could be applied to other Paleolithic sites in the future.

A total of 22 likely hominin bone fragments were identified in the pre-screening process, from which two parietal bone fragments and one proximal radial fragment were confirmed by ZooMS as belonging to hominins.

Denisovan Remains Uncovered

Two of these hominin remains were excavated from the same layer, dated between 148,000 and 143,000 years old, which also held four hominin teeth.

The research team further examined two of those teeth, and a detailed analysis indicated they belonged to males. The third specimen was even older, from a layer dated between 167,000 and 150,00 years old.

By screening the fragments for amino acids, the team identified a variant of COL1A2 R996K unique to Denisovans as present, confirming the species identity of the remains.

Other intriguing amino acids in the fragments included one shared by Denisovans, Neanderthals, and modern humans, as well as one that marks them as distinct from Homo erectus, which also occupied East Asia.

As the team closely examined the morphology of skulls excavated from Bianfu Cave, they identified a cranial thickness pattern remarkably similar to H. heidelbergensis and East Asian late Middle Pleistocene archaic Homo.

A New Understanding of Denisovans

After analyzing the morphology of the first Denisovan radius ever discovered, the researchers suggest it was likely oriented similarly to a Neanderthal’s, but with a shape and cross-sectional geometry closer to that found in modern humans.

The importance of the find lies not only in being the first example of its kind, but also in indicating biochemical demands and adaptations distinct from both Neanderthals and modern humans.

Besides Denisova Cave in Siberia, from which Denisovans draw their name, the team believes Bianfu Cave may hold the largest fossil record for the species.

This could provide researchers with crucial new data, over a decade into the quest to understand the Denisovan species of Asia.

Based on the age of the layers in which the remains were found, the team says the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau region, where the cave resides, may have been an ideal homing habitat at the time.

The Earth would have been in a glacial period, during which the area’s relatively warm climate would have aided hominin survival.

'Regulatory Capture Or Psy-Op': Top White House AI Advisor Slams 'Pace The Frontier' Push

Update (1055ET): David Sacks, former White House AI czar and co-chair of Trump's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), slammed Amodei and Altman over their calls to 'pace the frontier.'

In a nutshell; they don't need to establish some convoluted framework to pause the development of dangerous models, just 'agree not to build it.' Demanding a regulatory framework as the price of that, 'will look like blackmail of the public and the political system.'

You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric - market share, revenue growth, model capability - the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement.

I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible.

But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier.

Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want.

Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well.

So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it.

If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture - or an election-season psyop.

The platform recorded the locations of users, sorted them as supporters or opponents of their governments, and grouped populations into six demographic categories covering urban, clerical, military, youth, diaspora, and rural.

Its output was written in formal Arabic and styled as official government communications, with sentiment scores broken down by Gulf nationality alongside recommended counternarratives.

The actor fed the model batches of roughly 25 social media posts at a time and directed it to return each poster's demographic group, location, and political leaning, with confidence ratings attached to every finding.

Anthropic identified a second workstream of more than 255 fabricated social media accounts, which the company said indicated the actor was assembling a stock of fake profiles for later deployment.

In a separate task, the actor directed the model to generate posts for online personas in Persian, Arabic, English, and German, intended to pass as members of both pro- and anti-government Iranian populations.

The company said its findings independently corroborate a February 2023 investigation by the journalism network Forbidden Stories, which documented an S2T surveillance product described in a company brochure recovered from leaked Colombian military files.

Anthropic said the capabilities in that brochure map closely onto the behavior it observed.

Anthropic added that it identified the activity at its pilot stage and found no evidence that later stages of the surveillance chain described by Forbidden Stories were used against real targets before the account was banned.

Now, The Grayzone can reveal that the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) organization he founded is holding faith events sponsored by an Israel-based non-profit with close ties to the Israeli government.

A leaked contract obtained by The Grayzone reveals that TPUSA entered into an agreement with the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ) to sponsor a series of ostensibly Christian faith-based summits between 2025 and 2027. Signed on May 16, 2025, the contract committed IFCJ to pay $700,000 to TPUSA over two years. In exchange, the group was to receive a series of promotional benefits including main stage speaking slots for its President, Yael Eckstein, and the distribution of pro-Israel “activism kits” to over 200 college campuses.

Based in Israel and Chicago, Illinois, IFCJ presents itself as a charity which raises money from Christians to assist Jews supposedly suffering from poverty and antisemitism. In fact, it is a fundraising behemoth which is currently on a spending spree, plowing millions into American conservative media while partnering closely with the Israeli government to spread Zionist propaganda.

In a recent interview, IFCJ President Yael Eckstein boasted that her organization effectively supplements the Israeli state: “We’re a non-governmental organization, but we effectively distribute the aid so well that the government of Israel asks the Fellowship to build projects for them during times of emergency.” As an example, she pointed to IFCJ providing “bulletproof helmets and flak jackets” to first responders in Dimona during Israel’s war with Iran this year.

The IFCJ’s contract with TPUSA was inked in the midst of a severe crisis at the house that Charlie built. At the time, Kirk was publicly anguishing over the increasingly onerous demands of those he described as Jewish “stakeholders,” who were threatening to pull their support for TPUSA unless he stopped providing space at his events to conservative critics of Israel like Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly.

“It’s all of the sudden: ‘oh, Charlie: he’s no longer with us.’ Wait a second—what does ‘with us’ mean, exactly? I’m an American, okay? I represent this country,” he fumed to Kelly during an August 6, 2025 podcast.

Kirk had also become an outspoken opponent of US-Israeli plans to wage war on Iran.

As The Grayzone revealed, TPUSA’s largest donor, Robert Shillman, denounced Kirk’s criticisms of Israel at a private gala just four days before his killing, and announced that he’d withdrawn $2 million in contributions. By this point, Kirk had rejected a separate offer of Israel-directed donations to TPUSA, and refused a personal request from Netanyahu to visit Jerusalem.

The $700,000 contract with IFCJ demonstrates how much TPUSA had on the line when Kirk was killed. According to the agreement, that funding helped TPUSA hold three major faith-based events, and will continue to underwrite summits of “believers” and pastors through 2027.

The Grayzone asked IFCJ communications director Elizabeth Gartman about her group’s relationship with TPUSA. While acknowledging that “we’ve sponsored some things with them in the past,” Gartman declined to answer questions about the contract.

IFCJ is currently listed as a sponsor of TPUSA’s 2026 “Make Heaven Crowded” tour, which stirred controversy when a photo appeared on social media showing a giant Israeli flag hanging over the stage at an event at Cielo Vista Church in El Paso, Texas on August 29. Amid criticism from the conservative grassroots, TPUSA spokesman Andrew Kolvet claimed, “The church put [the Israeli flag] up all on their own. We don’t micromanage churches, especially when they’re gracious enough to host us.”

The Transparency and Good Governance Council estimated a claim against Defense and ordered it to provide information on the so-called Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, FANI, the designation that has replaced the traditional term UFO in official documentation.

The resolution R CTBG 0867/2026 officially appears among the resolutions estimated by the Council during August and is addressed to the Ministry of Defense.

In addition to the former UK prime minister, the train was also carrying diplomats and politicians from other European nations, including former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and German Green MP Robin Wagener, who told Der Spiegel: “These drone attacks are blind terror against Ukrainian civilians and a dangerous escalation in Putin’s war.”

“Russia is becoming more and more unscrupulous and is setting fires right on the border with the European Union and NATO. We must finally set clear limits to this terror,” Wagner added.

In 2013, the world’s first lab-grown hamburger was served in London. Made from cattle cells, it cost around €250,000 at the time and was more a proof of concept than a lunch. The idea seemed almost like science fiction: producing real meat without raising and slaughtering an entire animal. A little more than a decade later, one of the companies at the forefront of efforts to turn that idea into a commercial product is Israel’s Aleph Farms, which is attempting something particularly complex: not a burger or a nugget, but a cut of beef resembling a steak.

The Israeli story began at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Prof. Shulamit Levenberg of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering had spent years working in tissue engineering: studying how to make cells grow and organize themselves into three-dimensional tissue, for example to repair muscle or create blood vessels. In 2016, she began conducting experiments growing cattle cells on a plant-based protein scaffold. A year later, The Kitchen, the food-tech incubator of the Strauss Group, entrepreneur Didier Toubia and Dr. Neta Lavon joined the research. From that meeting of tissue engineering and food technology, Aleph Farms was born. Levenberg is a co-founder and the company’s chief scientific adviser, while Toubia serves as CEO.

As early as 2018, Aleph Farms unveiled what it described as the world’s first cultivated beef steak. In 2021, together with the Technion, it also presented a prototype of a thicker cultivated ribeye steak produced using 3D bioprinting. In a 2022 interview with ynet, Toubia explained that the company was not trying to create an exact replica of an existing cut of meat.

“Just as a Tesla is not identical to a gasoline-powered car,” he said at the time, emphasizing that the goal was to create a product with characteristics of its own, aimed first and foremost at people who eat meat.

Iran war reshapes Brics ties but also exposes divisions

This weekend, some of the most powerful people in the world gathered in Delhi around a vast circular table.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that together, the leaders next to him should increasingly become "rule-shapers", not "rule-takers".

Among those listening were members of the Brics group, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

These are hardly natural allies. They have histories of border disputes and even military confrontations.

India and China engaged in a deadly clash along their disputed border in 2020. Iran and the UAE have been on opposing ends of the war in the Middle East, with Tehran launching missiles and drones at its fellow Brics member as the conflict sent shockwaves across global economies.

The fact that India was able to gather these leaders together in person is a feat in and of itself and testament to its diplomatic reach. The weekend also provided a platform for countries to reassess their relationships in light of the Iran war.

But agreeing on what a new global order should look like and achieving clear, tangible outcomes was a much harder task, and that tension ran through this weekend's summit.

A counterweight to Western influence

For members such as China, Russia and Iran, Brics offers a vehicle to dilute the influence of the US and western Europe.

But India has been reluctant to cast Brics as an anti-Western bloc. Modi himself said at the summit that the group is "not against anyone".

That distinction matters for Delhi, which wants to preserve its relationships with nations at odds with each other.

"There are countries in the grouping which would like it to become anti-western, but it is not that," says Anil Trigunayat, a veteran Indian diplomat and former ambassador. What India has achieved, in his view, is a push for "strategic autonomy in an era of war" and initiatives to "enhance greater collaboration amongst themselves".

Inside the joint declaration

The summit succeeded in delivering a joint declaration when divisions among members have rarely been so glaring.

Twice earlier this year, meetings between Brics ministers had failed to produce a joint statement. This time a consensus was reached, but by side-stepping issues that members sharply disagree on, with few solutions.

The "New Delhi Declaration" was adopted on the first day of the summit. But what is striking is what it doesn't say.

On the war in the Middle East, the declaration urges "maximum restraint". It also condemns "attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities" but assigns no blame.

It reiterates support for a two-state solution, opposes forced displacement of Palestinians or actions that could "legitimise or prolong occupation", framing it carefully around existing UN resolutions.

It makes no mention at all of Russia's war in Ukraine, a departure from previous Brics declarations.

There is similar caution on trade. It lists concerns over "indiscriminate rising tariffs" and condemns unilateral sanctions but stops short of naming the US, and is likely to avoid Washington's ire.

Beyond the summit

In the wake of Trump's trade threats and the shock of the war in the Middle East, reshaping the global order has become a vital need for many member economies.

What the summit did provide is a platform for meetings that seemed hard to imagine just a few months ago.

Iran's Pezeshkian and Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince sat down for talks together - the highest-level face-to-face meeting known between the two countries since the war began.

This weekend offered Tehran a chance to show that it does not stand alone amid the US and Israel's military attacks and economic pressure.

As Iran tries to withstand US sanctions, Washington's "Operation Economic Outcast" and a naval blockade on its ports, Pezeshkian pressed for deeper economic ties with Brics members, including Malaysia, India and Ethiopia.

As for China, this was President Xi's first visit to Delhi in seven years. There has been deep mistrust between China and India since the 2020 border dispute, but those tensions have eased. There is also a large trade imbalance, with a deficit tilting heavily in China's favour.

What comes next?

The summit showed that Brics can create space for rivals to talk and manoeuvre outside Western-dominated institutions.

The harder question is what happens next. It's clear that members agree they need a new global order more than ever, but what exactly should replace it and how to get there is far more challenging to answer.

US embassy child abuse images suspect flown from UK before police interview

A US embassy staffer accused of possessing indecent images of children, was detained at his south London flat and flown out of the UK in August, without being first questioned by British police.

The US Embassy confirmed to the BBC that authorities are investigating the allegations and they have reassigned the staff member to the US while inquiries continue.

"The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously," embassy officials said in a statement.

They added that they "quickly informed UK law enforcement and took swift action."

It is understood the individual worked at the US embassy in Vauxhall, south west London, and though not a diplomat, he enjoyed the umbrella of diplomatic protection.

He was flown back to the United States on a commercial flight, but their investigations are ongoing in conjunction with UK authorities.

It is also understood Home Office ministers and the Metropolitan Police are in close contact with the US embassy on this matter as investigations continue.

A UK government spokesperson said: "We expect all foreign diplomats in the UK to abide by our laws, in the same way we expect all UK diplomats to do so when posted overseas."
