RAF launches first ever space squadron dedicated to defending Britain's satellites

The RAF has launched No. III Space Effects Squadron, its first dedicated unit to counter hostile threats to UK satellites.
New No. III Space Effects Squadron will be the UK’s first unit dedicated to disrupting, degrade, and deny hostile threats in space.
The squadron will protect the critical satellites that guide British ships, connect mobile phones and warn of missile attacks.
Forms a key part of the UK’s ability to gain and maintain freedom to operate in space, as set out in the government’s Space Strategy published this month.
Satellites vital to everyday life in the UK are set to be protected from hostile threats, as the RAF launches the UK’s first ever dedicated space squadron focused on disrupting, degrading, and denying enemy activity targeting British interests in space.
Announced today by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smith at the first-ever UK Space Power Conference, No. III Space Effects Squadron will bring together specialist personnel from across the Armed Forces to counter hostile activity in orbit and defend the satellites the nation depends on every day.
While sister units No. I Space Operations Squadron and No. II Space Warning Squadron give the RAF the ability to watch and warn of threats in space, the new No. III Squadron will act against those threats, using advanced technology, including Electronic Warfare, to disrupt, degrade and deny hostile actions. The squadron will support both offensive and defensive space operations and will expand over time as new capabilities enter service.
It comes as the Defence Secretary Wes Streeting will give a keynote address at the Space Conference.

Satellites are a core part of national security and support daily life across the UK.

Ambulances, firefighters and the police rely on satellite navigation systems for emergency responses, and energy networks use the same systems to organise power grids.
As space becomes more crowded and more dangerous – with hostile states developing capabilities to jam, disrupt or disable space assets – the government is taking action to defend UK interests in space, while maintaining an operational advantage for our armed forces.

Space no longer supports operations from the sidelines. It’s a domain of direct competition, where our military advantage can be won or lost.
No. III Space Effects Squadron will safeguard the vital benefits that space gives to our integrated armed forces, and will be capable of denying those benefits to our adversaries.
The formation of No. III Space Effects Squadron contributes to the UK’s developing capabilities for space warfare, including Electronic Warfare and countermeasures against anti-satellite weapons.
The work delivers on the UK’s Control of Space Requirement - the need to maintain freedom to operate in space, and deny adversaries the same freedom.
The Requirement was set out in the UK Space Strategy published earlier this month, and builds on the Strategic Defence Review, which made clear that the ability to operate in, from and through space underpins the UK’s security, prosperity and daily way of life.
While taking action to protect critical space infrastructure, the government remains committed to the peaceful and sustainable use of space.
The UK has formally ruled out destructive anti-satellite missile testing and continues to work through the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space to promote norms, rules and principles of responsible space behaviours.
That commitment underpins the UK’s continuous work with allies and partners to strengthen collective defence in space, including an £880 million investment between 2026/27 and 2029/30 in space-based Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and space control activities.

Russia downs nearly 200 Ukrainian drones over single region

One civilian was killed and three injured during a 24-hour wave of cross-border attacks, Kursk Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein has said
Russian forces have downed nearly 200 Ukrainian drones over Kursk Region in 24 hours as a wave of cross-border attacks killed one civilian and injured three others, Governor Aleksandr Khinsthein has said. Homes, shops, and vehicles were also damaged across the Russian border region.
A total of 193 UAVs were intercepted between Tuesday and Wednesday, Khinshtein said in a statement on Wednesday. Ukrainian forces also shelled border areas 45 times and carried out 24 separate drone attacks using explosive devices, according to the governor.
A 49-year-old man was killed in a border village, while three other men were injured in incidents across the region, according to Khinshtein. The strikes also damaged homes, shops, and vehicles, with one car completely destroyed.
Kursk Region, which borders Ukraine, has faced a sharp increase in drone attacks in recent days. Russian forces downed 168 UAVs over the region during the previous 24-hour period and 169 between September 20 and 21, according to the governor.
The latest attacks come after a massive Ukrainian drone raid targeted Moscow and other Russian regions during last weekend’s parliamentary elections, killing three civilians and injuring dozens.
More than 1,600 UAVs were repelled during the Sunday assault, including 450 on approaches to the Russian capital, according to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. He described the attack as “unprecedented” and said it had been intended to disrupt the elections.
The worst damage was reported in Moscow Region, where a drone struck an apartment building, killing a 44-year-old woman and seriously injuring her husband, who later died in hospital. Their two children were also injured.
An elderly man was killed when another drone hit and destroyed his home, while around 400 people, including 70 children, were evacuated from a 21-story apartment block after falling debris set its roof ablaze.
Homes, warehouses, and other buildings were also damaged or set on fire across the region.
Russia has accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians with long-range drones and undermining diplomatic efforts while publicly calling for renewed negotiations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that the Ukrainian leadership is “talking about peace” while doing everything to prevent negotiations and an end to the conflict.

Ukrainian Drone Forces Target 38 Energy Sites in Mid-September, Bringing Total to 412

Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS) have targeted 412 energy infrastructure sites in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories and inside Russia since launching the “Crimean Switch Off” operation in July, SBS Commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi reported on September 22.
According to Brovdi, Ukrainian drone units carried out the strikes between July 6 and September 22, targeting energy infrastructure supporting Russian operations across temporarily occupied territories and Russia.
The campaign comes in response to continued Russian strikes on Ukraine, including attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.
During the second ten-day period of September alone, USF units successfully targeted another 38 energy facilities.
These included 10 sites in temporarily occupied Crimea, nine in the occupied part of Donetsk region, 13 in the occupied part of Luhansk region, four inside Russia, and one each in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Among the facilities targeted were several major electrical substations, including the 220-kV Krasnodonska substation near Prokhladne in the Luhansk region and the 220-kV Amvrosiivka substation in the Donetsk region.
Other reported targets included 110-kV substations near Kypuche, Selidove, and Bilovodsk.
Inside Russia, Ukrainian drone units targeted the 110-kV Bolshaya Chern and Znamenskaya substations in the Oryol region, as well as other energy infrastructure.
The operation has also focused on gas infrastructure in occupied Crimea. Brovdi reported strikes against gas distribution stations at Orlivka, Bakhchysarai, Bilohirsk, Kyr-Bailar, Kholmivka, Hornostaivka, Klepynine, and Islam-Terek, with the Kholmivka facility targeted more than once.
Other reported targets included the Kreidyanka gas distribution station in Russia, the Rodakove gas distribution station in the occupied Luhansk region, and the Tasunove compressor station in Crimea.
Multiple SBS formations are involved in the operation, including the 414th “Madyar’s Birds,” 412th “Nemesis,” 9th, 20th “K-2,” and 429th “Achilles” Separate Unmanned Systems Brigades, as well as the 413th “Raid” Brigade, 427th “Rarog” Brigade, the USF’s 1st Separate Center, and the Phoenix unit of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service.
The campaign is part of broader SBS operations targeting Russian infrastructure.
On September 22, Brovdi also reported that Ukrainian forces had disabled 300 vessels belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet in the Azov and Black seas over an 11-week period.
The reported strikes were carried out as part of Operation “MoLoChKa,” another SBS campaign that has been underway since July 6.

IDF to conduct military exercise in Zikim Beach area on Thursday

"The topic of this gathering is mutual trust. That cannot be achieved with words alone, but by abandoning double standards. Atomic and nuclear weapons are in the hands of the 'Israeli regime,' but the [IAEA] inspectors are requested to come to Iran," Pezeshkian said.
"Israel has the bombs, has the weapons of mass destruction. Not a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). During their shameful lives, they have not allowed a single inspection, but they are rewarded with all the means necessary to bomb any capital of the region at will," he said.
"Our regional issues must be resolved in the region; no relationship with a foreign power can become the tool of threatening countries in the region," he added.

Son of ambassador Yechiel Leiter identified as soldier seriously wounded in Maccabim terror attack
Israel Police stated that the terrorist had hit a police patrol vehicle belonging to the Judea and Samaria District. An officer and a soldier were inside the vehicle as part of a joint operation.
IDF reservist Neria Leiter, an American citizen and son of Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter, was seriously wounded in a car-ramming terrorist attack at Maccabim (Bell) checkpoint on Route 443 near Modi’in-Maccabim-Re’ut on Wednesday.
In 2023, one of Leiter’s other sons, Maj. (res.) Moshe Yedidya, was killed in Gaza. He was a company commander in the 551st Brigade’s 697th Battalion.
Neria Leiter is currently under sedation and in serious condition at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

Houthis allege Saudi warplanes carried out strikes in five Yemeni provinces

German investigators are examining suspected explosives found meters from a crashed drone near Wunstorf Air Base in Lower Saxony, as authorities probe a possible link to the August sabotage attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
The findings were reported by Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, and WDR in a joint investigation published September 22.
A farmer discovered the drone, broken into several pieces, near the Wunstorf airfield about a week earlier, the outlets noted.
Officials later found suspicious material only a few meters from the site, which security circles believe be explosive, according to the investigation. Forensic analysis of the substance has not been completed, the outlets added.
The case now involves the federal prosecutor general's office and the Federal Criminal Police Office, the outlets wrote. Investigators are examining whether the Wunstorf drone connects to the Leipzig plot, though no link has been established.
The device was reportedly built similarly to the drones used in the Leipzig attack, with at least one component manufactured using a 3D printer, according to the outlets. Investigators also believe the drone may have been lying near the airfield for a longer period, possibly up to two years, the outlets indicated.
Wunstorf hosts the Bundeswehr's A400M transport fleet and is considered a central hub for supplying German forces worldwide with equipment and personnel, the outlets explained.
Germany has held Russia responsible for the Leipzig incident, in which attackers allegedly sought to destroy Ukrainian cargo aircraft.
Two suspects remain at the center of the case: Oleg L., a Latvian national holding a Russian passport, and Andrei K., a Belarusian-Russian dual citizen.
Officials believe Oleg L. flew into Germany via Berlin before the attack and drove a rental car toward Saxony. He reportedly left the country shortly before the attack occurred, acting as a logistical coordinator, the outlets confirmed.
The outlets reported that Oleg L. has maintained contacts with Russia's GRU military intelligence service for years, particularly with Colonel Denis Smolyaninov.
Western security agencies have linked Smolyaninov to sabotage operations against countries supporting Ukraine and have sanctioned him as a result.
Documents obtained by the London-based Dossier Center, funded by Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky and shared with the three outlets, support that assessment, Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, and WDR indicated.
Andrei K., the second suspect, was previously flagged for minor offenses in the Baltic states and Finland, the outlets reported. He reportedly entered Germany on an Italian tourist visa, and his DNA was recovered at the Leipzig crime scene.
A spokeswoman for the federal prosecutor general's office pointed to the ongoing investigation and declined to comment further on the case, according to the investigation.
The Wunstorf discovery was also discussed Tuesday during the weekly intelligence briefing at the Chancellery, where the heads of Germany's security agencies meet, the outlets noted.

In mid-August, a drone forced repeated runway and airspace closures at Hanover-Langenhagen Airport, and police opened a parallel inquiry into a possible connection to the Leipzig plot.
No direct link was confirmed, but investigators noted the device had evaded the airport's detection systems entirely, fueling concern about a broader pattern of interference with German aviation infrastructure.

The US Army is deploying 1,200 National Guard soldiers from its newly formed Mobile Brigade Combat Team (MBCT) to the Middle East to support Operation Inherent Resolve, marking the National Guard's first combat deployment under its restructured brigade concept.
The 116th Brigade, built around National Guard units from Virginia and Kentucky, blends traditional ground maneuver forces with unmanned aerial systems (UAS), electronic warfare (EW), counter‑UAS tools, and modern command‑and‑control systems.
The MBCT model is intended to give commanders a more mobile, sensor‑rich, and digitally connected force that can detect, disrupt, and defeat hostile drones and other emerging threats.
According to a US Army release, the 116th Brigade dates back to colonial America, when Virginia militias fought in the 1775-1783 Revolutionary War.
Its troops saw combat in both World Wars, and it has conducted peacekeeping operations in Kosovo and combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The transition to a MBCT comes as the US Army continues to learn lessons from recent wars and turn toward new operational capabilities.
Its deployment marks the first time troops will operate in a combat environment and follows a year of intensive training, planning, and preparation.
The Army Recognition website said that during training, the brigade learned various systems, including Anduril’s Ghost X and AeroVironment’s Switchblade loitering munitions.
It also trained with long-range reconnaissance UAS and EW equipment. Further, it tested how teams combine reconnaissance, drones, EW, and other capabilities to respond to threats.

The character of warfare is changing, and the growing use of unmanned aircraft systems on battlefields around the world is forcing militaries to adapt faster than ever.
At Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the XVIII Airborne Corps is taking on that challenge through Exercise Scarlet Dragon, which brings soldiers and industry partners together to test emerging technologies in realistic field conditions.
The exercise helped evaluate which capabilities can integrate across the force, including systems designed to detect, track and defeat unmanned aircraft threats.
"The Scarlet Dragon exercise has become a validation exercise in the dirt with soldiers doing integrated, real-world, operational-type tasks," said Army Col. Tom Monahan, director of the XVIII Airborne Corps' Joint Innovation Outpost.
Held Sept. 11-17 at Fort Bragg, the exercise combined soldiers, military systems, artificial intelligence, resilient data pathways and industry partners to address one of the Army's most pressing challenges: integrating sensors, electronic warfare, command and control and defensive fires against evolving unmanned aircraft threats.
"Basically, [it was] transitioning gaps to capability requirements that we need, capabilities that will fill the gaps, and then running them through the exercise and the experimentation to come away with our findings to support the warfighter," said Army Col. Paul Staeheli, the XVIII Airborne Corps operations officer.
Rather than testing technology in isolation, Scarlet Dragon placed emerging capabilities in an austere field environment where soldiers could evaluate performance against realistic threats and operational problems.
It also replicated tactics and capabilities soldiers could encounter on a future battlefield, including large-scale drone swarms and systems modeled after threats seen in current conflicts.
Some scenarios featured swarms of up to 100 unmanned aircraft, giving soldiers the opportunity to train against the scale and complexity of modern drone attacks.
That threat environment allowed the XVIII Airborne Corps to evaluate not only individual systems but also how different capabilities work together.
"What we've found is that there's no one sensor to rule them all," said Army Col. Rob Kenny, the XVIII Airborne Corps chief of fires. "It takes an integrated, layered approach."

Kenny said the company node is determining how quickly soldiers can sense the threat and pass that information back in time to act.
Electronic warfare, sensors, radar, autonomous systems and defensive fires each provide different tools for detecting, identifying and defeating unmanned aircraft. Integrating those capabilities is critical as adversaries continue to evolve their use of drones.
Scarlet Dragon also demonstrated how the Army can work with industry to develop and integrate new technologies faster.
Leading-edge technology companies worked alongside soldiers to identify operational problems, test potential solutions and gather feedback directly from the field.
The partnership gave developers firsthand insight into how their systems perform in realistic military environments, while giving soldiers a chance to shape the technologies they may eventually use.
"The vendors out here are different contractors with different companies trying to show the limitations and capabilities of all their systems," said Army Staff Sgt. Charles Johnson, the noncommissioned officer in charge of the company node.
"They're giving the full scope of what their systems can do and how it can help us in the best way possible."
The effort extends beyond developing new equipment.
The exercise examined the broader counter-UAS challenge, from passive detection technologies, such as acoustic sensors and portable radar, to autonomous systems and emerging capabilities designed specifically for the UAS fight.
That approach reflects the XVIII Airborne Corps' broader responsibility as America's Contingency Corps.
The exercise also reinforced a larger message about modernization: preparing for the future battlefield requires more than buying new equipment.
It requires understanding emerging threats, testing solutions under realistic conditions and rapidly adapting when those solutions fall short.
Through experimentation and collaboration with industry, the XVIII Airborne Corps is working to integrate autonomous technologies with legacy systems and address a rapidly evolving unmanned aircraft threat.
The goal is not simply to observe the future of warfare, but to prepare for it.
As unmanned systems continue to reshape battlefields around the world, exercises such as Scarlet Dragon give the XVIII Airborne Corps an opportunity to learn, adapt and develop the capabilities soldiers will need to maintain an advantage in future conflicts.

FCC clears nationwide test of cellular networks for drones

If you thought your phone was the only thing relying on America’s cell towers, the FCC wants to test a very different possibility: drones could soon use those same commercial networks as part of the infrastructure keeping them connected and visible in the sky.
The Federal Communications Commission has approved a temporary waiver supporting the US Department of Transportation’s Mobile Network Aviation Assessment Program (MNAAP).
The nationwide research and proof-of-concept program will test whether commercial wireless networks can support aviation safety and security services as more aircraft, particularly drones, enter US airspace.And this is bigger than simply asking whether a drone can get a 5G signal.
The DOT wants to investigate whether cellular connectivity, satellite direct-to-device services and sidelink technologies could eventually support some pretty important pieces of the drone ecosystem, including Remote ID, drone command and control, electronic conspicuity, counter-drone detection and autonomous detect-and-avoid systems.
A drone flying beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) needs dependable ways to communicate and exchange information.
That’s particularly important if the US wants to move toward larger-scale drone delivery, automated inspections and other operations where pilots can’t simply keep the aircraft in sight.
Instead of building an entirely separate communications network for drones, MNAAP is asking a potentially much simpler question: Can existing commercial networks do some of the job?
The testing will happen across the contiguous United States. The FCC’s waiver allows up to 2,000 DOT-authorized general aviation pilots to participate using compliant commercial wireless devices.
It also allows up to 200 non-federal participants to operate drones equipped with dedicated MNAAP modules at the same time.
Those drone modules won’t just be random cellular hardware bolted onto aircraft, either.
The FCC requires them to receive equipment authorization and mobile broadband provider certification, with additional restrictions on how they can be used.
The testing also cannot cause harmful interference to wireless networks. That matters because one of the biggest hurdles to expanding commercial drone operations is connectivity.
The FCC is making a substantial amount of spectrum available for the experiment, covering everything from lower-frequency 600 MHz, 700 MHz and 800 MHz bands through cellular, AWS, PCS, CBRS and several higher-frequency bands, including 24, 28, 37 and 47 GHz.
There is an important distinction here, though. The FCC has not just declared cellular networks ready for nationwide BVLOS drone operations. This is a test.
The temporary waiver gives regulators and industry a way to gather real-world data about how wireless networks perform when aircraft are operating above the ground.
The FCC says it plans to use what it learns to inform greater commercialization and use of spectrum for unmanned aircraft systems.
The waiver currently runs until October 1, 2029, giving the program several years to collect data. For drone operators, the immediate impact may be limited. You won’t suddenly be able to take a consumer drone, insert a SIM card, and legally fly it across the country beyond visual line of sight.
But the experiment could eventually help answer a question that becomes increasingly important as US skies get busier: Can the cellular infrastructure already covering America become part of the safety net for thousands, or eventually millions, of connected aircraft?

Russia and China 'ready to embarrass Donald Trump' with truth about alien contact

Russia and China are "ready" to disclose that humanity has established contact with an extraterrestrial civilization in a move designed to "embarrass" Donald Trump and the United States government, according to a sensational claim by a prominent UFO researcher.
Earlier this year, Ukrainian drones demolished a massive 230-foot radio telescope that Ukrainian officials suspected was being utilized to relay targeting data for the Russian military.
However, according to Professor Simon Holland, the RT-70 radio telescope was actually being employed for a far more unusual purpose - establishing communication with an extraterrestrial civilization.
The radio telescope located in Crimea was linked to GLONASS, Russia's GPS network, and on August 31, it was destroyed by Ukrainian drones.
Prior to its destruction, the telescope was undoubtedly utilized as part of multiple projects designed to make contact with alien life
However, most of the transmissions sent from Crimea are constrained by the speed of light, and have not yet reached their intended targets.
One radio transmission was directed toward an apparently Earth-like planet circling the star Gliese 58, just under 21 light-years from Earth.
It's anticipated to be the first to reach its destination. If anyone is present to receive it, the transmission will arrive in 2029.
However, Simon told us, certain transmissions have been sent utilizing a groundbreaking new quantum-tunneling technology that surpasses that universal speed limit.
And, he adds, prior to the telescope's destruction, researchers had already received a response.

Simon explains: "At the beginning of the 21st century, a German physics researcher at the University of Koblenz, called Günter Nimitz, proved that you could, do quantum tunnelling with a signal."
"The interesting thing about quantum tunnelling is that when you inject the signal into an object which could be a metre or it could be a 1,000,000 miles away, it comes out the other end at the same time it goes in.
There is no transit. So it's faster than the speed of light. It's instantaneous."
Simon claims to be in contact with a program insider, though he declined to identify his source, stating: "It's somebody I know who's originally British. He's been head of a large European radio telescope organisation.
He now is out in the Far East and has contact, obviously, with Russia. He's part of this METI [sending messages to extraterrestrial intelligence] team."
Although the RT-70 radio telescope has been decommissioned, Simon's source alleges that Russia continues to exchange communications with this enigmatic alien world.
According to the claims, Russia has shared its quantum messaging technology with China, and both nations are reportedly planning a startling disclosure, which they hope will "embarrass" the US government.
"There is an ET arms race," Simon asserts. So far, the insider has not revealed when Russia and China intend to release this groundbreaking information: "I asked him, and he said they'll use the information to embarrass Trump or whoever. But there's no set date."
As of now, he notes, although the researchers have received a message, they have not yet translated it.
Simon suggests he's reasonably confident all major global powers have access to this intelligence: "Britain knows, France knows, the rest of the world knows.
"America knows, and they're holding it back due to Congress asking silly questions, and mainly due to defence contractors, not wanting to reveal what they're actually using from observations of UAP characteristics. So everybody actually knows."
He references an official MOD document from 1999 that acknowledged UAPs as a legitimate phenomenon: "They've written a NATO protocol for airmen and women on how to avoid them. And they're not a threat to national security because they don't know what they are."
However, he claims the US and UK governments are declining to release their findings about the experiments: "They're actually holding back what you might call disclosure. I prefer to call it confirmation. But they're not really just going there."
"Obviously," Simon states, "Russia and China have made contact in some way or know also that it's real. They've had lots of sightings recorded and, possibly, this radio telescope system has confirmed it.
"But it's a political decision as to when Russia and China announced. Another interesting part of the story," Simon continues, "is that the Vatican has briefed bishops throughout the world."
Leading clergy members have received a pre-written statement for their congregations, which Simon has reviewed.
It states: "We are not alone, when this becomes public, bishops, tell your congregation, God makes all creatures in the universe. That's our position."
He believes it's merely a question of when the truth will be made public: "Everybody knows the fact. It's not being disclosed. So when are they going to do it? I don't know."
