Hackers steal $352 million from major crypto exchange

Bitget has suspended withdrawals and says its protection fund can cover the loss as AI-assisted cyber threats grow

Hackers have stolen nearly $352 million from major cryptocurrency exchange Bitget, prompting the company to suspend withdrawals. The breach comes amid mounting concern that AI is making cyberattacks easier to carry out.

Bitget detected unauthorized transfers from its wallets on Thursday evening, CEO Gracy Chen said. She stressed, however, that customer funds are safe and that the loss is covered by the company’s User Protection Fund, which holds more than $464 million.

The stolen assets came from parts of Bitget’s “hot” and “warm” wallets, which are used to process transactions and hold funds readily available for transfer. Its offline “cold” wallets were not affected, according to Chen.

She added that although withdrawals have been temporarily suspended, deposits and trading remain available while the company investigates the breach.

Bitget has not identified the perpetrators, but Chen said, without elaborating, that the company suspects North Korean involvement.

Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain has estimated that the attackers have already converted about $183 million of the stolen assets into Ether tokens.

The theft follows other major attacks on cryptocurrency infrastructure this year. Earlier this month, around $320 million in Bitcoin was drained from a wallet used by the Liquid Network, although most of it was later returned.

In August, users of Coldcard hardware wallets also lost at least $89 million after attackers exploited a flaw in how the devices generated the secret keys protecting their funds. Coldcard’s maker has warned that AI-assisted code review could uncover old software flaws faster than developers can address them.

The growing capabilities of AI have also been linked to an overall increase in cyberattacks on cryptocurrency platforms. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said it has recorded a 440% increase in AI-assisted malicious entries since powerful open-source coding tools became widely available, from about two a day to 11.

Beyond cryptocurrency, reports of AI agents gaining unauthorized access to real systems during unrelated tasks and security tests have raised questions about whether developers can reliably keep them within their assigned limits, or prevent malicious actors from using more capable models to find vulnerabilities and carry out attacks on a larger scale.

Executives at Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and xAI have backed calls to slow the development of increasingly powerful systems.

US Cybersecurity Agency Releases Election Security Plan Ahead Of November Midterms

The nation’s cybersecurity agency released its election infrastructure security plan on Thursday, ahead of the November midterms set for Nov. 3.

The 13-page document outlines potential threats to voting systems and lists no-cost services that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) offers state and local officials.

“In July of this year, Secretary Mullin tasked CISA with developing the Election Infrastructure Security Plan, which had been developed to help partners defend against cyber and physical threats to election infrastructure,” it reads.

“Election security is not a partisan issue. Election security is national security.”

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had initially said the plan would be published by mid-August.

CISA, created in 2018 under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has warned states about foreign threats.

The new plan warns of software flaws, voter registration database hacks, insider threats, and physical risks like bomb threats that hit some polling places in 2024.

“Many longstanding election practices such as handling ballots in bipartisan teams of two, allowing observers to be present during ballot counting, and maintaining chain-of-custody procedures—were specifically designed to reduce the likelihood and impact of insider threats,” the plan reads.

It says longstanding practices can handle most of those problems.

“Use paper ballots that can be easily reviewed to ensure transparency, auditability, and resilience against software failures or manipulation,” the report reads.

The goal, the document states, is “to ensure the American people can trust voting systems and know that physical safety measures will be in place when they go to their assigned polling locations to cast their votes.”

It also says DHS has “consistently supported CISA’s delivery of cybersecurity and physical security services to election officials.”

The plan names no specific 2026 threats from Russia, Iran, or China.

However, Mullin did say in a letter released on Aug. 27 that parts of many voting machines used in the United States are made in China.

“Voting machines with components manufactured by foreign adversaries introduce significant security risks,” Mullin said. “These vulnerabilities mean that malicious actors could potentially compromise election infrastructure at any stage of the supply chain, even before the machines are assembled or deployed. If a component is tampered with during manufacturing, it could serve as a point-of-entry for hackers, allowing for the possibility of synchronized attacks across multiple machines and jurisdictions.”

Case Closed. Satellite Photo of Ground Zero 10 Days After 9/11 Shows Thick Carper of Straight Cut Steel Two Football Fields Away

One of the first things Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who coordinated the destruction of the steel evidence at Ground Zero, did after the attack was prohibit almost all photography at the site. Police and FBI agents were ordered to confiscate cameras on the spot.

One key piece of photographic evidence that did survive was an aerial photo taken on Sept. 23, 2001, long before major clean-up operations had begun. Rescue workers and firefighters were still primarily concerned with searching for human remains and even long-shot survivors. The clash between police and firefighters which took place as Giuliani hastened to the "scoop and dump" phase of the operation was Nov. 2.

The aerial photo shows that the towers did not collapse down through the line of gravity, but were blown outwards in all directions for two or three times as far as the towers were wide, leaving a carpet of cleanly-cut steel beams and perimeter wall sections across the entire WTC complex. A downward gravitational collapse cannot explain the lateral ejection of steel sections with the weight of bulldozers for up to two football fields, at clocked speeds of up to 80 MPH.

As can be seen in the aerial photo, the steel beam pieces are mostly straight as arrows, un-deformed by heat, and cut neatly at the ends. The steel beams do not wind up in a mound, as one would expect, with the center of the tower's bases as the high point. Rather they are scattered uniformly across the entire World Trade Center complex, which consisted of seven buildings.

Perimeter sections, which consisted of 15-inch wide beam assemblies covered with aluminum cladding, can be seen lying thickly across WTC 6, nearly two football fields away. Each one of these sections weighed up to 20 tons.

The official NIST report explained dust ejections (what are obviously demolition squibs) by saying "compressed air" forced the dust out of breaking windows. But no amount of compressed air can lift 20-ton steel assemblies and hurl them laterally for 400 feet, at 50 to 80 MPH.

Hence the reason for Giuliani's ban on photography at Ground Zero.

Keeping in mind the massive scale of the towers (nearly a football field wide,) it must be remembered that what seem like tiny sticks are 10-foot long pieces of two-foot wide steel beam and larger, of which even the smallest would weigh nearly one ton.

Flock And Other Tech Firms Decline Senate Testimony On Mass Surveillance

Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley and the heads of Axon Enterprise, Motorola Solutions and Verkada all declined invitations to testify before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Wednesday, as senators from both parties pressed on the surveillance networks their cameras feed. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who chairs the Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, called the no-shows "so typical."

Democrats weren't any happier. "For the Flock CEOs, obviously they're nervous about being on camera," said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) went further: "Their refusal to come forward and answer questions is a sign that they have something to hide, and they are refusing to be accountable."

Instead, the panel heard from Lindsey Isaacs, a Florida woman who spent 13 days in jail after Flock's system wrongly flagged her car as involved in a fatal crash. She was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide. The charges have since been dropped.

As The Epoch Times notes further, While the license plate-reading cameras developed by Flock have gotten the most airtime in recent weeks - prompting nationwide, viral moments of activist vigilantes destroying or disabling the cameras amid public opposition to the technology - competitors at Axon Enterprise and Motorola offer similar options for police and local governments.

The Los Angeles Police Department is currently planning to roll out a 10-year contract with Axon, a $235 million arrangement that would equip America's second-largest metropolis with more than 1,600 license plate readers.

For municipalities, companies like Flock, Axon, and Motorola offer a potential melding of technology and traditional surveillance tech to reduce crime and make roadways safer. But the cameras they operate have boosted a growing artificial intelligence-powered surveillance network accessible by thousands of U.S. law enforcement agencies, which critics say runs afoul of the Fourth Amendment's protections against unreasonable search and seizure.

Hawley warned during the hearing that, if not addressed, this would have troubling implications for Americans.

"This is still the United States of America, and it shouldn't be that when you walk out your door in the morning, you just have to agree in assent and accept the fact that you're going to be on camera morning, noon, and night," Hawley said.

"You'll be tracked by anybody and everybody in the world. You'll have no privacy whatsoever. You'll be tracked when you take your kids to school and tracked when you go to church and tracked when you go to the grocery store."

Some high-profile abuses of the data collected from these cameras have made headlines.

In one recent case, Indianapolis authorities announced that five police officers had been charged with misusing data from Flock.

"The allegation is that the officers were searching or running the license plate information and tracking individuals through the Flock system. Very often times they had direct relationships with these individuals," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears explained after these charges were announced.

Meanwhile, lawmakers have demonstrated increased interest in the issue in recent weeks.

Transgender Service Members Allegedly Denied Promised Separation Pay After Forced Military Exits

Democratic lawmakers wants Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to respond to a legislative inquiry by Oct. 14 following claims of broken promises.

A group of Democratic lawmakers want answers from the Pentagon and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following reports that roughly a dozen transgender service members never received separation pay following their forced exits from the military.

The concerns stem from the Trump administration's efforts to purge the U.S. Armed Forces of transgender individuals. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on the first day of his second term, effectively prohibiting transgender, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming individuals from service, receiving support and implementation from the Department of Defense.

The latest inquiry from Democratic members on various House committees, in the form of a letter addressed to Hegseth, cites a recent Washington Post report that DOD has allegedly failed to pay the promised separation pay to at least 12 transgender service members who were separated from the military due to Trump's ban.

"This is unacceptable and appears to be another broken promise by this administration to those who have served. … Under the trans military ban, the services have been forced to ignore the sacrifice, years of service, and contributions by transgender service members," the letter reads. "Some service members were approved—and then rejected for—early retirement benefits.

"As we fight a war in Iran that has resulted in nearly 800 troops being injured, the Pentagon continues to waste valuable time and resources on scouring through service members’ confidential medical records in order to identify transgender service members for separation.”

Some of those negatively affected, according to lawmakers, include an Army National Guardsman with 3-year-old twins who is waiting for a $130,000 check; an Air Force major who flew search-and-rescue helicopters and was supposed to receive $340,000; and a Texas National Guard who is owed more than $66,000.

Military.com reached out to the Pentagon for comment.

“Trump’s trans military ban was cruel to begin with, but delaying the promised separation payments for trans servicemembers is salt in the wound,” said Rep. Mark Takano, chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus and one of the letter's signers. “Our servicemembers fought for us, and that’s why we are fighting to ensure they get the pay they were promised.

"In July, I led the successful effort to defeat an amendment to codify Trump’s trans military ban into law. Now, as we continue fighting the broader ban, my colleagues and I are working to ensure these troops get the separation pay the DoD promised them in order to lessen the financial burden on them and their families that this cruel ban has caused.”

Military.com previously reported how even though the U.S. Supreme Court issued a stay in response to legal challenges to the ban of an estimated 4,200 active-duty transgender members, multiple active lawsuits continue to be heard by various federal judges.

They include Talbott v. USA, which halted the immediate discharge of trans members, and Ireland v. US, which centers on Air Force Master Sergeant Logan and 17 other transgender service members from the U.S. Air Force and Space Force who filed suit to preserve their salaries and retirement benefits.

The letter was also signed by House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel Ranking Member Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, Congressional Equality Caucus (CEC) Co-Chair Rep. Sarah McBride, House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Ranking Member Rep. Adam Smith, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Ranking Member and CEC Chair Rep. Mark Takano, HASC Member and CEC’s Transgender Equality Task Force Co-Chair Rep. Sara Jacobs, HASC Member and CEC Co-Chair Rep. Eric Sorensen, and CEC Co-Chair Rep. Everton Blair.

What Information Lawmakers are Seeking

Lawmakers in their letter cited 10 U.S.C. § 1175a and DoDI 1332.44, which authorize and establish procedures for voluntary separation pay and benefits, as well as 10 U.S.C. § 1174 and DoDI 1332.29 which authorize and establish procedures for involuntary separation pay.

They also quoted the DOD's own guidance from February 2026 regarding the implementation of the ban, which stated that “service members eligible for voluntary separation pay will be paid at a rate that is twice the amount the service member would have been eligible for involuntary separation pay” and that “service members separated involuntarily pursuant to this policy may be provided full involuntary separation pay in accordance.”

Nathan Ballesty was arrested in December after the Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched an investigation into a post in which he called for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to be kidnapped.

After searching his home on Sydney's Northern Beaches, authorities found Nazi paraphernalia, including a uniform and a copy of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, and seized his electronic devices.

Among the content found on his devices were violent messages aimed at Mr Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, and a recording of a video call in which he performed a Nazi salute.

Ballesty pleaded guilty to performing a Nazi salute, as well as six counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend and one count of contravening a police order after he refused to provide investigators with his device passwords for weeks.

On Friday, he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment — including a non-parole period of 18 months — backdated to January, when he was first remanded into custody.

The sentence includes a mandatory minimum of 12 months' imprisonment for performing a Nazi salute, making Ballesty the first person to be sentenced under the laws introduced in February 2025.

He will be eligible for parole in May 2027.

Ballesty's parents provided a letter of support for their son, detailing his lifelong struggle with mental health issues and social isolation and describing him as a kind, gentle and empathetic person.

Catholic priest Robert Hickman jailed for sexually abusing two girls

Hickman had pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a child, and indecent dealing with a child in Perth in 1990.

WA District Court Judge Karen Shepherd described his actions as a "breach of trust" given his position, and too serious to justify a suspended term.

He was sentenced to two years and six months in jail, to be served immediately at Casuarina Prison.

The court heard the Perth victims were aged 11 and 13 when Hickman flew over from Sydney on official business in 1990, and attended a dinner with other members of the Catholic Church at their foster home.

The man the girls knew as "Father Bob" then went into their bedroom to give "goodnight prayers" and read out a bible story.

He told one of the girls he was going to give her a "special blessing" before touching her indecently.

The priest then groped the other girl in a similar manner before leaving the room, saying "goodnight girls, God bless, it was lovely to meet you".

The court heard the girls had then cried themselves to sleep.

One girl reported the incident to the foster mother, who initially dismissed her as a liar.

Nine years later, the foster mother reported the incident to the Catholic Church's WA Professional Standards Office, and received a letter of apology from Hickman.

The church offered money as part of a non-disclosure agreement.

'A very evil soul'

In a statement read out in court by prosecutor Rachael McCallum, one of the victims described the impact of the abuse as "immeasurable".

The woman said she had to carry the burden of having been sexually abused, and being told she was a liar, at a time when she was living in a new environment after her parents had died.
