Man appears in London court accused of providing Russian intelligence with drone factory details

A man has denied planning to "torch" UK drone factories on behalf of Russia's intelligence services in an alleged sabotage plot.

Joshua Cammidge, from Swindon in Wiltshire, is accused of researching four drone manufacturing sites in the town and carrying out reconnaissance.

On Friday, prosecutors told the Old Bailey the 31-year-old was in contact with a British national fighting for Russia in Ukraine, who he "offered to conduct sabotage" at the sites for.

A three-week trial has been scheduled to start in April 2027 at Winchester Crown Court.

Cammidge, of Galsworthy Close, appeared at the Old Bailey via video-link from HMP Wandsworth charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service and intending to commit or engage in conduct to prepare an act of sabotage.

'Locating manufacturing sites'

Prosecutor Sarah Przybylska told the court Cammidge was in contact in Ukraine with Aiden Minnis, who is also from Wiltshire, in August and September.

She said Minnis "tasked the defendant with locating drone manufacturing sites in the UK".

Przybylska added Minnis discussed with the defendant "sabotaging" those sites.

Cammidge allegedly sent coordinates of the sites to Minnis and "offered to conduct sabotage" against those sites, the court heard.

"It was clear that it was to assist the Russian war effort," according to the prosecution.

Delivering Cammidge's indication of a not guilty plea, John Oliver from the defence said: "There was no intention [for the defendant] to assist or take part in sabotage or for anyone else to do so.

"Communications in which he engaged were nothing more than a waste of time and are not to be taken seriously."

'WiFi jamming device research'

Cammidge, a father-of-one, was arrested by Counter Terrorism Policing London officers, supported by Wiltshire Police, at an address in Swindon on 4 September.

He was taken to a London police station while searches were carried out at a different address in Swindon.

On 5 September, Cammidge was detained under the National Security Act 2023, on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service.

When interviewed by police, he strenuously denied all the charges against him.

The charges state that between 27 March and 5 September, Cammidge allegedly provided a Google Maps screenshot showing a drone factory with a blue circle indicating a particular location, and provided two Google screenshots showing the addresses of four drone manufacturing sites in Swindon.

It is also alleged he provided further details as to the activity at one factory and volunteered to commit an act of sabotage.

He is accused of conducting research about a WiFi jamming device, and is said to have carried out "reconnaissance".

The Crown Prosecution Service previously said the representative Cammidge was believed to be in contact with was from the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group controlled by Russia's intelligence services.

In July, the UK government formally designated, external the GRU Volunteer Corps under the National Security (State Threats) Act 2026 - making it a criminal offence to express support for the group.

Asteroid Bennu’s rock and dust carry chemical fingerprints from both the inner and outer solar system, and scientists now have a leading explanation for why:

the asteroid’s parent body may have formed in a narrow zone just past the water ice line and just inside a still growing Jupiter’s orbit.

That scenario, laid out in a new study in Science Advances, helps explain why Bennu, its cousin Ryugu, and a rare group of meteorites called CI chondrites all share elemental abundances that closely mirror the sun itself.

This mixed origin solves a puzzle that has divided researchers for years.

Bennu’s parent asteroid seems to have swept up material from far more of the solar system than one small body should reasonably contain, and researchers now think Jupiter is the reason.

As the giant planet grew, it began sorting the debris drifting past it, holding some back while letting the rest continue on.

To trace where the dust came from, scientists measured leftover signatures from ancient exploding stars, preserved as slightly different ratios of iron, titanium, and chromium depending on where material ended up in the early solar system.

Testing five separate Bennu samples in two independent labs, researchers found iron and titanium signatures that stayed nearly identical across every sample, while chromium showed small variations that only partly line up with signs of past water alteration inside the asteroid.

Five Bennu Samples Reveal Nearly Identical Chemical Fingerprints

Bennu is what scientists call a rubble pile, a loose cluster of rocky fragments held together mostly by gravity rather than forming one solid chunk.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission scooped material off Bennu’s surface and parachuted it back to Earth in 2023.

For this study, researchers examined five samples of different sizes and textures, including two powdered batches weighing about 20 and nearly 1,300 milligrams.

Two separate labs, one at ETH Zurich and one at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, ran the same samples through independent testing methods.

Their results matched closely, giving the team confidence the numbers reflected real chemistry rather than lab error.

Iron and titanium signatures came back nearly identical across every sample, regardless of size or texture. Chromium was the exception.

It showed small but real variations from sample to sample, and some of those differences lined up with signs that water once moved through the rock and altered it unevenly in certain spots.

One small sample, though, fell outside that pattern entirely, and the researchers say another process they do not yet fully understand may also be at work.

That shared chemistry is the real discovery here. Bennu’s iron signature ties it and its relatives more closely to material usually associated with the inner solar system, the same neighborhood that eventually built Earth.

That is surprising, since other chemical clues had always placed these objects with material from far out in the solar system instead.

Jupiter’s Growth Filtered Large Rocks from Fine Dust

To explain how dust from opposite ends of the solar system ended up in the same asteroid, researchers turned to models of how a young, growing Jupiter reshaped the disk of gas and dust around it.

Those models suggest Jupiter reached a large size within the first few million years after the solar system’s oldest solid material formed. A planet that size would have carved a gap in the surrounding material, and that gap would have worked like a filter.

Big chunks of rock and ice from farther out got stuck outside that gap, unable to drift any closer to the sun. Fine dust, grains smaller than a fraction of a millimeter, stayed light enough to remain mixed across the disk even as Jupiter grew.

Larger, solid rock fragments were mostly blocked from crossing the gap, which is why Bennu’s parent body accreted mostly fine dust and shattered mineral fragments rather than whole, coarse rocks.

Recent dating of Ryugu points to formation as early as roughly 2 million years after the solar system’s oldest solid material, and Bennu’s own chromium measurements in this study are consistent with that early timeline.

That timing sits earlier than several other meteorite families and is difficult to square with models in which comet forming regions produce bodies only late in the solar system’s history.

Bennu Bridges Two Distinct Regions of the Solar System

Bennu is not simply a leftover piece of the outer solar system, and it is not a stand-in for the inner planets either.

Researchers describe it as something in between, built from a pool of fine dust that Jupiter helped assemble by blocking larger rocks while letting small grains keep mixing from both regions.

That remains the team’s favored explanation rather than a settled fact, since a similar dust reservoir could, in principle, have formed elsewhere in the outer disk.

Even so, this mechanism accounts for why Bennu, Ryugu, and CI meteorites all carry elemental chemistry that echoes the sun so closely, despite rock that clearly experienced heavy water damage over time.

Pinning down where these asteroids formed does more than settle an old classification argument among scientists.

It sharpens the picture of how raw material, including water and organic molecules, moved through the early solar system, with Bennu offering one clue to how such material could have reached the inner planets.

Côte d’Ivoire signed the Artemis Accords on Thursday, becoming the 75th signatory and marking a major milestone for this growing coalition.

With the signing ceremony in the nation’s largest city, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire joined other like-minded nations and committed to the peaceful, transparent, and responsible exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

“The United States and Côte d’Ivoire already cooperate on Earth,” said NASA’s Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson. “Today, we expand that partnership beyond it.

Joining the Artemis Accords opens new opportunities for our scientists, engineers, and institutions to work together as humanity returns to the Moon and prepares for what comes next.

We’ve aligned on the principles. The opportunities are in front of us. And now we can get to work.”

The nation’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Adama Diawara signed on behalf of the country in a ceremony held during Africa Space Expo ASPEX 2026. Chargé d’affaires Junaid Munir from the U.S. Department of State witnessed the ceremony.

“This is a great achievement, and important for Côte d’Ivoire’s ambitions and for the rest of the African Union members,” said Director General of the Space Agency of Côte d’Ivoire Tidiane Outtara.

Côte d’Ivoire has expanded its involvement in space science and technology through years of international cooperation.

Since 2019, the National Office of Technical Development of Côte d’Ivoire and NASA have collaborated on Earth observation and geodesy, a field that measures Earth’s shape, gravity, and movement.

Together, the partners have advanced global geodetic networks, improved space‑based measurement techniques, and increased understanding of how Earth’s systems interact.

The country later established the Space Agency of Côte d’Ivoire in 2025 to coordinate national efforts in Earth observation, space weather, astronomy, satellite navigation, and communications.

In 2020, NASA and the State Department joined with seven other founding nations to establish the Artemis Accords, responding to the growing interest in lunar activities by both governments and private companies.

The Artemis Accords are the first set of practical principles aimed at enhancing transparency, safety, and coordination among nations as they explore the Moon, Mars, and beyond, committing nations to:

“That’s why my administration strongly supports the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor,” Trump said earlier this week, while calling for other ways of moving oil, including pipelines.

The corridor was jointly unveiled at the G20 summit in New Delhi in 2023 by the US, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, EU, Italy, France, and Germany. The IMEC would combine maritime routes, railways and other infrastructure, alongside planned energy and digital links. It has two broad sections: an eastern leg connecting India to the Gulf, and a northern leg linking the Gulf to Europe.

Cargo would sail from India to the UAE, move by rail across Saudi Arabia and Jordan to Israel’s Mediterranean coast, and then travel by sea from Haifa toward European ports. However, the IMEC is not by itself a single oil pipeline designed to replace Hormuz, as Trump’s comments seemed to imply. It is a trade and connectivity network.

What’s the IMEC’s geopolitical significance?

When the IMEC was announced, it was seen as a challenger to another route, which has been in the making for decades – the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Conceived in 2000 by India, Iran, and Russia, the 7,200-km INSTC will move freight from Mumbai through Iranian ports such as Bandar Abbas and Chabahar, across Iran and Azerbaijan – or via Caspian Sea routes – into Russia and onward to Northern and Western Europe.

Its main advantage over other routes is speed: the INSTC is said to be between 20% and 67% faster than existing corridors, while also avoiding the Suez Canal and Bab al-Mandab.

Since 2022, it has become one of Moscow’s highest-priority alternative logistics routes, as it allows Russia to maintain trade links with partners in South Asia.

The corridor’s development, however, has been slow, largely because Iran, and later Russia, came under unprecedented Western sanctions. Even so, work has continued. India has invested around $120 million in Iran’s Chabahar Port, widely seen as a strategic anchor of the INSTC.

However, work at Chabahar has also been stalled by unilateral US sanctions against Iran.

Washington gave New Delhi a sanctions waiver in 2018, allowing India to develop and use the port for Afghanistan’s reconstruction and regional trade. A second six-month waiver given in October expired in April, making it harder for India to continue to work on the port.

Chabahar is more than 500 km away from the conflict around the Strait of Hormuz. However, it still came under attack from US forces, with airstrikes targeting Iran’s maritime infrastructure and surveillance facilities in July. New Delhi clarified at the time that the Indian-operated Shahid Beheshti terminal itself was not damaged.

For India, Chabahar – and INSTC – remain the best options to access the Central Asian, Russian, and European markets, even if Washington and Tehran end hostilities tomorrow and open up Hormuz. A lot of work has already been done and the impact from any regional instability or political uncertainty would be far less than in the case of IMEC.

Why Hormuz actors still matter and the full corridor cannot be built now

It is difficult to imagine that the IMEC, if and when it becomes a reality, would move trade fully away from Hormuz. Saudi and UAE ports in the Persian Gulf that are key hubs on the route would still be impacted by any tensions around the strait.

The route will have to be recalibrated to ports like Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman, to make it bypass Hormuz. However, in the last few months ships have been attacked off the coast of Oman and as far west as Yemen.

Even the land corridor may not be fully safe in a regional conflict, as shown by the many Iranian missile hits on Saudi Arabia. That is a point missed by Trump, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who in April called for advancing the IMEC to diversify export infrastructure away from the Hormuz bottleneck.

The IMEC’s viability depends on much more than physical infrastructure, such as ports and railway lines. Making the land connectivity part work requires deeper transport and political cooperation across the Middle East, and specifically Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel.

That is no longer easy to pull together after Israeli forces invaded Gaza. The widespread public anger in the Arab world makes it nearly impossible for the Gulf monarchies to agree to such collaboration with Israel, the war with regional rival Iran notwithstanding. Finance is another issue, with no firm overall funding commitments or construction timelines in place. The corridor remains a long-term proposal rather than an operational alternative to existing energy and trade routes.

So where does IMEC stand?

India and its partners are still backing the project. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed their commitment to the IMEC in May and called for a first ministerial meeting on the corridor to take concrete steps toward its implementation this year.

Still, despite the urgency created by the Middle East conflict and Trump’s comments, a fully functioning IMEC is years away.

A legendary spy plane has vanished from a California military base — it comes as NASA teases a mysterious new aircraft sparking speculation the two could be related.

The SR-71 Blackbird, tail No. 844, had been displayed for years at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, which is collocated with Edwards Air Force Base.

Satellite imagery indicates it has not been seen since at least May 17, according to Aviation Week defense editor Steve Trimble, who first reported the disappearance.

The timing is hard to ignore.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman unveiled a silhouette resembling an SR-71 during last week’s All-In Summit in Los Angeles while promising that the agency is rebuilding its fleet of experimental X-planes and pushing back into extreme-speed and high-altitude flight research.

“In the service of the first A [aeronautics] in NASA, we are rebuilding our X-plane fleet. The X-59 is researching quiet supersonic flight, but it’s just the beginning,” Isaacman told TWZ.

“It will not be long before NASA once again is flying as high and as fast as we had in decades past, and then even more.”

When the Blackbird-like image came up during a live interview immediately afterward, Isaacman added fuel to the mystery by asking, “You sure that’s a Blackbird?” He offered no further clarification.

The missing jet is no ordinary exhibit. Originally designated US Air Force serial No. 61-7980, it was the last SR-71 produced and the last one to fly, making its final flight in 1999.

Its current whereabouts are unclear, although Aviation Week sources said the aircraft was moved into a hangar earlier this year for an inspection.

The report said the combination of the jet’s disappearance and Isaacman’s presentation raises the possibility of a return-to-flight program after more than 26 years.

NASA has not confirmed that scenario, instead pointing to Isaacman’s broader push for more experimental aircraft capable of advancing high-speed and high-altitude flight.

The California desert has long been a proving ground for aviation’s wildest experiments, and NASA is once again pushing the limits there.

The agency’s experimental X-59 has been ripping across the skies above the Mojave as part of its effort to make supersonic flight over land quieter.

The sleek aircraft has already reached more than Mach 1 during testing at Edwards, with NASA planning further flights to study the “quiet thump” it produces instead of the ear-splitting sonic boom associated with traditional supersonic jets.

The ultimate goal is to gather enough data to help clear the way for commercial aircraft that could someday slash cross-country flight times.

US must beat China to the moon, NASA chief says

The U.S. must meet its timeline to beat China in sending astronauts to the moon by decade’s end, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman tells NewsNation.

“We have a real rival here in China,” he told “The Hill” on Thursday. “They intend to put their astronauts on the surface of the moon in 2029.

Our intention is to do it in 2028. That means, no matter what, it’s coming down to months, not years. That is way too close.”

Isaacman’s comments came as Chinese President Xi Jinping was on the second day of a three-day visit to Washington, D.C., that has been framed as an attempt by the Trump administration to stabilize U.S.-China relations.

The cordiality is underscored by intense economic and technological competition between the two superpowers.

Isaacman said the U.S. would enjoy a major symbolic victory if it can stay on target and land astronauts on the moon before Beijing. Both countries, he noted, intend to build bases on the Lunar South Pole.

NASA’s first manned mission to the moon in 1969 prompted adversaries to think, “I wonder what else America is capable of doing, and maybe we should think twice before encroaching on their interests,” Isaacman said.

“Well, the inverse is also true,” he added.

NASA chief stays ‘open-minded’ about UAPs

Isaacman said he tends to think UAPs documented in government videos are likely natural phenomena or covert technology rather than extraterrestrial visitors.

NASA is among agencies helping sort through declassified materials, under a Trump administration effort to be more transparent about UFOs.

Isaacman added he is being “open-minded.”

“It is kind of our job to go out and try and answer the question, ‘Are we alone?’” he said.

Asked whether data centers will one day routinely be deployed in space instead of on Earth, Isaacman said the prevalence of low-orbit models will come down to economics.

“Your data center is eventually going to burn up and come back home, and then the cost to potentially replace that — does that close? And I think it will. It may not for the first few years, but over time it will.”

A Particle Accelerator Could Create Dark Matter From Empty Space

There's something hinky about the amount of gravity in the Universe.

When all the normal matter and the gravity that should come with it have been totted up, a discrepancy emerges in the final numbers.

Not just a smidge, a little skimming off the top, a one here or a zero there: there's way more gravity than there is normal matter to make it.

We call the unknown source of the gravity excess dark matter, and scientists estimate there's roughly five times as much of it as there is normal matter in the Universe.

That means the mystery matter should be absolutely everywhere, and so it is, as far as physicists can tell. But we still don't know what it is, let alone how to make it.

Now, a theoretical paper has identified a new recipe we could try.

What if, ask theoretical physicists Stefan Evans and Ralf Schützhold of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf in Germany, we just took a bunch of atomic nuclei and gave them a good, hard shake?

OK, not literally – and obviously there's a good bit more to it than a nucleus maraca.

But the pair proposes that if nuclei are accelerated hard enough in a particle accelerator, they could disturb the quantum vacuum in just the right way to produce pairs of axions – hypothetical particles that could make up dark matter.

"Accelerated nuclei such as in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions can create entangled pairs of axions in analogy to the dynamical Casimir effect which can also be interpreted as signatures of the Unruh effect," they explain.

Well, duh. But let's elaborate a bit anyway.

We'll start with axions.

These hypothetical particles have been kicking around for nearly half a century, although dark matter wasn't the problem they were originally proposed to solve.

That problem lies in quantum chromodynamics, or QCD, the theory that describes the strong force binding quarks together to form protons and neutrons, which cluster together in atoms to form the nucleus.

QCD allows for a particular kind of symmetry violation that, for reasons physicists don't understand, simply doesn't seem to happen. That part isn't really relevant to this paper, so we won't go further into it.

What is relevant is that the axion emerged from a proposed solution to this puzzle. As an unexpected bonus, the properties of the hypothetical particle also made it a compelling dark-matter candidate.

Which gives the axion a foot in two worlds: QCD and dark matter.

It's the QCD foot that's pertinent here.

One of the many weird things about QCD is that even apparently empty space isn't truly empty. The quantum vacuum contains a background called the quark condensate, made up of quark-antiquark pairs.

Inside an atomic nucleus, however, that condensate is weaker – and that's important because the strength of the quark condensate helps determine the effective mass of an axion.

This means that if axions exist, they should be effectively lighter inside an atomic nucleus than outside it – making the nucleus a different kind of medium for axions, a little like water is a different medium for light than air.

This still makes a difference even when no axions are hanging around.

Quantum mechanics doesn't allow even completely empty space to be perfectly featureless and still. Instead, the fields that permeate space retain an irreducible background of quantum activity, known as vacuum fluctuations.

One strange consequence of those fluctuations is known as the Casimir effect. Place two objects extremely close together, and they can change which fluctuations are possible in the space between them compared with the space outside.

The resulting change in the field's vacuum energy can produce a measurable force between the objects.

In its best-known form, the Casimir effect involves the electromagnetic field and two closely spaced conducting plates – but the same underlying physics can, in principle, arise with other quantum fields, too.

Evans and Schützhold reasoned that something similar should happen with the axion field. Since a nucleus changes an axion's effective mass, it should also change the vacuum fluctuations of the axion field around it.

Their calculations suggest that if you put two nuclei close together, those altered fluctuations should generate an attractive Casimir-like force between them.

OK, so we have two nuclei sitting still, feeling a little attracted.

But the Casimir effect does something even weirder when stuff starts moving in just the right way.

If the thing disturbing a quantum field changes sufficiently rapidly, that disturbance can inject energy into the field, converting its vacuum fluctuations into pairs of real particles.

That's the dynamical Casimir effect, and it's not just theory. Physicists have seen it produce real photons. This is where our nucleus maraca comes back in.

A nucleus already changes the vacuum fluctuations of the axion field simply by existing. But if you accelerate that nucleus hard enough, the region of the altered axion field moves in just the right way to produce the dynamical version of the Casimir effect.

Some of the energy involved in rapidly accelerating the nucleus can then emerge as a pair of real, entangled axions. Strangely, there's another way of understanding the same process.

According to the Unruh effect, an observer undergoing constant acceleration should experience what looks like empty space to an unaccelerated observer as a warm bath of particles.

So, from the perspective of an accelerated nucleus, the empty vacuum would appear to contain a nice warm bath of axions. The nucleus could scatter an axion from that bath.

From our unaccelerated perspective, however, there is no axion bath – so we would instead see a hurtling nucleus appear to pop a pair of entangled axions out of the vacuum.

It sounds utterly demented, and utterly impossible – but we may, the researchers explained, already have the technology to put the idea to the test.

Evans and Schützhold propose ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions as one possible setting.

These are near-misses between atomic nuclei traveling at relativistic speeds, in which their powerful electromagnetic fields interact without the nuclei themselves colliding.

During such a close encounter, the nuclei undergo the abrupt change in motion the proposed mechanism requires.

It might not work. The estimated odds of producing an axion pair depend strongly on the axion's mass, and even if one is produced, detecting it is another challenge entirely.

You might need a sensitive liquid-xenon dark matter detector, for instance, and the axion would need to travel in the right direction to hit it. So it's likely to be very difficult.

Still, it might be worth a shot. After all, you can't make axion soup without breaking a few eggs.

Project Suncatcher: Google to launch first space data center test in orbit next week

TPUs are ready to catch some rays, hyperscaler claims

Google will launch its AI chips into orbit for the first time next week as its Project Suncatcher space data center program takes another step forward.

The hyperscaler said it will conduct its first test in orbit, launching a prototype satellite to evaluate how its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) AI hardware performs in space.

Details of Project Suncatcher were first revealed last year, with Google stating it would have a two-satellite constellation up and running by 2027.

It is part of a wave of space data center projects being undertaken by some of the biggest names in tech, as companies explore whether off-planet compute can provide additional capacity to run AI systems.

The likes of Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos-backed Blue Origin have revealed this year that they are seeking regulatory approval of orbital compute clusters.

This initial Project Suncatcher deployment will be launched into space on the upcoming Transporter-18 rideshare SpaceX mission, which will transport craft from several different vendors into low Earth orbit (LEO), and is scheduled to take off on October 1.

Google’s system has been developed in partnership with satellite firm Planet Labs.

Google’s Project Suncatcher: Shaking and radiating

The initial test craft, which Google has named MVP, per a report from the New York Times, will feature just four TPUs, which will be powered by solar panels supplying them with 1kW.

In a blog post about Project Suncatcher, Travis Beals, Google’s senior director for paradigms of intelligence, revealed some of the challenges the team has been trying to solve to ready its compute infrastructure for space.

To try and combat the vibrations the chips will experience when being blasted into space, as well as high g-force in LEO, the Suncatcher team conducted vibration testing by intensely shaking the satellite on all three axes to mimic the frequencies of a rocket launch.

“Tests like this rarely go as planned, so we were pleasantly surprised that the hardware held up to the force,” Beals said.

The TPUs were also tested in a proton beam facility at UC Davis’s Crocker Nuclear Laboratory while running AI workloads, to try and simulate how the hardware would perform when facing the high levels of radiation it will encounter outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

This radiation can play havoc with electronic systems. “During the test, we monitored closely to see how errors, like a bitflip, would affect our workloads,” Beals said.

“Initial results have shown that our Trillium TPUs hold up remarkably well, and can survive a radiation total ionizing dose greater than what they would receive during a five-year space mission.”

Cooling and connectivity

The cold conditions found in space are often cited as a potential benefit for orbital data centers, but the lack of atmosphere also means there is no airflow to transfer heat away from the components.

Beals said Google is working on a number of different approaches to cooling its satellites, including “a combination of heat pipes and radiators to cool the chips.”

He said: “So far, our team has tested the technology in a thermal vacuum chamber that simulates both the thermal and vacuum environment in space.

We’ll see how our new TPU cooling system works in space and refine our designs as we learn more.”

Google has said previously that it envisions 1km (0.6 mile) arrays of 81-satellite compute clusters. These will be connected via laser links, Beals said. Constellations like SpaceX's Starlink network already use laser-based communication.

“The technology in space already exists, but most state-of-the-art systems are optimized for low bandwidth across large distances, whereas our lasers need to operate at very high bandwidth over extremely short distances,” Beals explained.

“Maintaining the necessary connection requires extraordinary precision, similar to hitting a coin-size target from miles away while both points are in motion. We’ll test our work on this in 2027 when we put two satellites in orbit.”

'Owlright, Owlright, Owlright': Watch Rocket Lab launch private Japanese radar satellite tonight

Rocket Lab is feeling “owlright” about tonight's launch of a Strix satellite for Japanese company Synspective's imaging constellation.

The mission, called “Owlright, Owlright, Owlright,” is scheduled to lift off aboard an Electron rocket from Pad B at Rocket Lab’s Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand this evening (Sept. 25), at 8:15 p.m. EDT (0015 GMT on Sept. 26).

It will be the 13th Strix satellite that Rocket Lab delivers to orbit for Synspective, which is building a constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) spacecraft to collect Earth imaging data for municipality management efforts around city planning and infrastructure, as well as natural disaster response.

The launch will stream live on Space.com, courtesy of Rocket Lab, as well as on the company's website, beginning about 30 minutes before liftoff.

Owlright, Owlright, Owlright will be Rocket Lab's 96th launch overall, and its 18th so far in 2026. This mission will bring Electron’s 2026 total to 15, with three other launches this year of Rocket Lab’s suborbital HASTE rocket rounding out the sum.

Electron is Rocket Lab's workhorse launch vehicle. It stands 59 feet tall (18 meters), and sports a launch capacity to low Earth orbit (LEO) up to 661 pounds (300 kilograms).

Synspective’s Strix spacecraft weigh about 220 pounds (100 kg) each, and expand to a lengthy 16.4 feet (5 meters) wide after SAR antenna deployment.

Rocket Lab has committed to launching the entirety of Synspective’s Strix constellation, which aims to deliver 30 spacecraft to LEO by the end of the decade.

Living up to their namesake — Strix is a genus of owl — the SAR satellites are designed to collect Earth-observation data even in poor lighting conditions, and can peer through cloud cover to study the ground below.

As the constellation expands, each Strix satellite has been delivered to a slightly different orbital destination.

If all goes according to plan, Electron will launch the Owlright, Owlright, Owlright payload into a 37-degree orbital inclination, for deployment at a LEO altitude of 347 miles (559 kilometers).

Attacks on Ukrainians in Poland have continued to rise as public attitudes toward Ukrainian refugees deteriorate, Kiev’s ambassador to Warsaw, Vasily Bondar, has said. His remarks came a day after a Ukrainian man was detained over a deadly knife attack at a Catholic abbey in southeastern Poland.

Polish police recorded 180 attacks or acts of aggression against Ukrainians in the first half of 2026, Bondar told RBK Ukraine in an interview published on Friday. There were 275 such incidents in all of 2025, up from 267 in 2024.

“We do see an increase of around 30%,” the diplomat said. He added that more incidents are now being classified as hate crimes against Ukrainians rather than ordinary domestic offenses.

Bondar also said Ukrainians committed 10,800 offenses in Poland during the first half of 2026, but argued the figure was statistically insignificant given that around 2 million Ukrainian nationals live in the country.

His comments came a day after a 31-year-old Ukrainian man allegedly stabbed five people at a Benedictine abbey in Jaroslaw, killing a priest and injuring four others. Polish authorities have said they are still investigating the motive and circumstances of the attack.

The incident comes amid worsening Polish attitudes toward Ukrainian refugees and continued tensions between Warsaw and Kiev over historical disputes, including Ukraine’s veneration of nationalist figures associated with the WWII-era massacres of ethnic Poles.

Bondar acknowledged that Polish society has a “consolidated public opinion” that is “highly negative” toward some historical figures regarded as heroes in Ukraine. He nevertheless argued that Kiev “could not give up its national interests” for the sake of better relations with Warsaw.

A July survey by polling agency CBOS found that, for the first time since it began tracking the issue, a majority of Poles opposed accepting Ukrainian refugees.Some 52% were against taking them in, compared with 42% in favor.

A separate CBOS survey conducted in July found that 53% of Poles believed reconciliation with Ukrainians was possible – the lowest level recorded – while 38% said it was impossible.

Air Force Materiel Command Command First Sergeant visits Space Launch Delta 45

Sept. 25, 2026

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Keelye Coffin, Air Force Materiel Command command first sergeant, visited Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, on Sept. 8-9 to engage with Airmen, Guardians, and senior leaders.

In her role as AFMC Command First Sergeant, Coffin has oversight of the First Sergeants assigned to Space Launch Delta 45. This visit provided an opportunity to gain a firsthand look at the missions taking place across the installations while connecting with First Sergeants, Airmen and Guardians who support the U.S. Space Force’s launch mission.

In its organizational structure, the U.S. Space Force has Field Commands that oversee multiple Deltas. Within this construct, Space Systems Command oversees units such as Space Launch Delta 45 and Space Launch Delta 30, among others.

This is similar to how the U.S. Air Force has Major Commands such as Air Force Materiel Command and Air Combat Command. These MAJCOMS support and manage a large number of units and bases.

Airmen supporting the space mission in units like SLD 45 fall under the field commands of their bases as well as the AFMC MAJCOM.

“When the U.S. Space Force was first stood up, there wasn't a supporting MAJCOM initially assigned, but because many of their bases previously fell under AFMC, we took on the responsibility,” said Coffin.

“The Space Force has continued to grow, and Field Commands like SSC have been activated and taken on more of the roles of a traditional servicing MAJCOM for their Space Force bases.

In my role, we still support the First Sergeants that are at Space Force installations and help in areas such as mentorship and development.”

First sergeants in the Air and Space Forces serve as dedicated senior enlisted advisors to the unit commander, focusing on the health, morale, welfare and readiness of service members and their families.

They act as a key bridge between leadership and the enlisted force and ensure standards and discipline are maintained while advocating directly for the needs of personnel so the unit remains fully mission-ready.

During her visit, Coffin spent time with the First Sergeants of Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This included group meetings as well as one-on-one sessions with the first sergeants.

While First Sergeants take care of the service members in their units, they also need support for themselves, which is the role that Coffin serves.

“It's a lot of work to be a First Sergeant,” said Coffin. “It's a lot of taking care of other people, so, in my job, I try to build relationships with them so that when they're going through something, they know that they can call me as another First Sergeant to help take care of them.”

In addition to personal support, Coffin also provides professional guidance to the First Sergeants under her MAJCOM.

“As Command First Sergeant, I’m responsible for all the first sergeants at AFMC locations to include Space Force bases, and I have about 110 first sergeants that I take care of,” said Coffin.

“I work with the Command Chiefs and leadership to take care of the First Sergeants from the time they decide to take on the position.”

During this trip, beyond building relationships, she also participated in a Chief’s panel with Airman Leadership School students and spoke with SLD 45 members who had recently returned from deployments.

After visits like these, Coffin returns to AFMC headquarters to report on the trends and areas the MAJCOM can focus on. Currently, there is an increased importance on helping members with the stresses that can result from a deployment.

“I’ve been speaking with people who have come back from a deployment to see if they can give some advice on how we as a MAJCOM can help with reintegration,” said Coffin.

“We’re asking, ‘How can we help them when they come back or even before they go? How can we prepare them for what they may experience while they're deployed in dynamic environments?’”.

Throughout her visit, Coffin also learned more about the responsibilities and the challenges Airmen face while operating in a predominantly Space Force environment.

“Not everybody understands the unique demands of the space mission,” said Coffin. “I like to make these trips to see what the service members are experiencing and see how they take care of the mission at these locations so that I can figure out how to best support them.”

As the Space Force continues to operate alongside the Air Force across the Department of the Air Force, visits like this one help strengthen the ties between Airmen in support of the space mission and their MAJCOM, as well as those who have taken on the responsibility to exclusively devote themselves to the care of Airmen and Guardians as First Sergeants.

“When we take care of each other, it makes it a little easier when we face challenges because we've already built relationships we can rely on,” said Coffin.

“Whether it’s a First Sergeant or the team as a whole, when we support each other every day, it ensures that we can come to work and give 100% to the mission.”

But the court noted in its unsigned ruling that the National Voter Registration Act bars the broad purging of voter rolls in the weeks leading up to an election, which “limits the potential impact” of the decision this year. States can still make individualized queries about voters.

Last March, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at preserving and protecting the integrity of US elections.

“Free, fair, and honest elections unmarred by fraud, errors, or suspicion are fundamental to maintaining our constitutional Republic. Hackers steal $352 million from major crypto exchange

Bitget has suspended withdrawals and says its protection fund can cover the loss as AI-assisted cyber threats grow

Hackers have stolen nearly $352 million from major cryptocurrency exchange Bitget, prompting the company to suspend withdrawals. The breach comes amid mounting concern that AI is making cyberattacks easier to carry out.

Bitget detected unauthorized transfers from its wallets on Thursday evening, CEO Gracy Chen said. She stressed, however, that customer funds are safe and that the loss is covered by the company’s User Protection Fund, which holds more than $464 million.

The stolen assets came from parts of Bitget’s “hot” and “warm” wallets, which are used to process transactions and hold funds readily available for transfer. Its offline “cold” wallets were not affected, according to Chen.

She added that although withdrawals have been temporarily suspended, deposits and trading remain available while the company investigates the breach.

Bitget has not identified the perpetrators, but Chen said, without elaborating, that the company suspects North Korean involvement.

Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain has estimated that the attackers have already converted about $183 million of the stolen assets into Ether tokens.

The theft follows other major attacks on cryptocurrency infrastructure this year. Earlier this month, around $320 million in Bitcoin was drained from a wallet used by the Liquid Network, although most of it was later returned.

In August, users of Coldcard hardware wallets also lost at least $89 million after attackers exploited a flaw in how the devices generated the secret keys protecting their funds. Coldcard’s maker has warned that AI-assisted code review could uncover old software flaws faster than developers can address them.

The growing capabilities of AI have also been linked to an overall increase in cyberattacks on cryptocurrency platforms. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis said it has recorded a 440% increase in AI-assisted malicious entries since powerful open-source coding tools became widely available, from about two a day to 11.

Beyond cryptocurrency, reports of AI agents gaining unauthorized access to real systems during unrelated tasks and security tests have raised questions about whether developers can reliably keep them within their assigned limits, or prevent malicious actors from using more capable models to find vulnerabilities and carry out attacks on a larger scale.

Executives at Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and xAI have backed calls to slow the development of increasingly powerful systems.

US Cybersecurity Agency Releases Election Security Plan Ahead Of November Midterms

The nation’s cybersecurity agency released its election infrastructure security plan on Thursday, ahead of the November midterms set for Nov. 3.

The 13-page document outlines potential threats to voting systems and lists no-cost services that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) offers state and local officials.

“In July of this year, Secretary Mullin tasked CISA with developing the Election Infrastructure Security Plan, which had been developed to help partners defend against cyber and physical threats to election infrastructure,” it reads.

“Election security is not a partisan issue. Election security is national security.”

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had initially said the plan would be published by mid-August.

CISA, created in 2018 under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has warned states about foreign threats.

The new plan warns of software flaws, voter registration database hacks, insider threats, and physical risks like bomb threats that hit some polling places in 2024.

“Many longstanding election practices such as handling ballots in bipartisan teams of two, allowing observers to be present during ballot counting, and maintaining chain-of-custody procedures—were specifically designed to reduce the likelihood and impact of insider threats,” the plan reads.

It says longstanding practices can handle most of those problems.

“Use paper ballots that can be easily reviewed to ensure transparency, auditability, and resilience against software failures or manipulation,” the report reads.

The goal, the document states, is “to ensure the American people can trust voting systems and know that physical safety measures will be in place when they go to their assigned polling locations to cast their votes.”

It also says DHS has “consistently supported CISA’s delivery of cybersecurity and physical security services to election officials.”

The plan names no specific 2026 threats from Russia, Iran, or China.

However, Mullin did say in a letter released on Aug. 27 that parts of many voting machines used in the United States are made in China.

“Voting machines with components manufactured by foreign adversaries introduce significant security risks,” Mullin said. “These vulnerabilities mean that malicious actors could potentially compromise election infrastructure at any stage of the supply chain, even before the machines are assembled or deployed. If a component is tampered with during manufacturing, it could serve as a point-of-entry for hackers, allowing for the possibility of synchronized attacks across multiple machines and jurisdictions.”

Moscow is not preparing for military action against European countries, President Vladimir Putin has said, dismissing claims of a Russian threat as an attempt to inflame tensions.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the 12th United Cultures Forum in St. Petersburg on Friday, Putin said European countries were fueling tensions in order to continue supporting Ukraine.

He accused “aggressive circles” in Europe of seeking to use Ukraine as “cannon fodder” to constrain Russia’s development.

Putin described remarks by the Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur about a possible conflict with Russia as a “provocation,” and referred to statements about the benefits of a preemptive attack on Russia as “political clownery.”

“The circus has left, but the clowns remain,” he said.

Putin also addressed the prospect of renewed talks with Kiev, saying Moscow would base any decision on Russia’s own interests.

According to the president, Ukraine has been actively raising the prospect of a ceasefire, including on attacks against energy infrastructure, as well as an end to the blockade of Russia’s Black Sea coast, while continuing its own strikes on Russia.

Russia responded to attacks on civilian targets and attempts to blockade its Black Sea coast, Putin said, particularly pointing to the “mass” Ukrainian attack on Moscow on September 20, as well as attacks on residential buildings and election officials. He described Russia’s retaliation as “sensitive and destructive” for Ukrainian forces.

“They must feel these retaliatory strikes by Russia and understand that no provocative actions, no escalation of the situation will lead to the result they want. They will only make their position worse,” the Russian president said.

According to Putin, claims that Moscow intends to attack Europe are being used to justify continued spending on Ukraine to European citizens.

“This is complete nonsense,” he said.

The U.S. Supreme Court has for now revived a federal data system the Department of Homeland Security revamped into a tool to check the citizenship of millions of Americans on state voter rolls. The tool has mistakenly flagged some eligible voters as potential noncitizens.

The news comes as the Trump administration has been pouring resources into searching for noncitizens on voter rolls ahead of the upcoming election.

Many states uploaded their voter lists to the expanded version of the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements data system — known as SAVE — sharing that voter information with the federal government. Tens of millions of voter records were run through SAVE before it was blocked by a federal judge in Washington, D.C., in June.

The Supreme Court's decision* clears the way for the administration to again use the revamped SAVE in its hunt for noncitizens on voter rolls, as well as in its unprecedented project of compiling lists of adult citizens in each state.

Case Closed. Satellite Photo of Ground Zero 10 Days After 9/11 Shows Thick Carper of Straight Cut Steel Two Football Fields Away

One of the first things Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who coordinated the destruction of the steel evidence at Ground Zero, did after the attack was prohibit almost all photography at the site. Police and FBI agents were ordered to confiscate cameras on the spot.

One key piece of photographic evidence that did survive was an aerial photo taken on Sept. 23, 2001, long before major clean-up operations had begun. Rescue workers and firefighters were still primarily concerned with searching for human remains and even long-shot survivors. The clash between police and firefighters which took place as Giuliani hastened to the "scoop and dump" phase of the operation was Nov. 2.

The aerial photo shows that the towers did not collapse down through the line of gravity, but were blown outwards in all directions for two or three times as far as the towers were wide, leaving a carpet of cleanly-cut steel beams and perimeter wall sections across the entire WTC complex. A downward gravitational collapse cannot explain the lateral ejection of steel sections with the weight of bulldozers for up to two football fields, at clocked speeds of up to 80 MPH.

As can be seen in the aerial photo, the steel beam pieces are mostly straight as arrows, un-deformed by heat, and cut neatly at the ends. The steel beams do not wind up in a mound, as one would expect, with the center of the tower's bases as the high point. Rather they are scattered uniformly across the entire World Trade Center complex, which consisted of seven buildings.

Perimeter sections, which consisted of 15-inch wide beam assemblies covered with aluminum cladding, can be seen lying thickly across WTC 6, nearly two football fields away. Each one of these sections weighed up to 20 tons.

The official NIST report explained dust ejections (what are obviously demolition squibs) by saying "compressed air" forced the dust out of breaking windows. But no amount of compressed air can lift 20-ton steel assemblies and hurl them laterally for 400 feet, at 50 to 80 MPH.

Hence the reason for Giuliani's ban on photography at Ground Zero.

The below video narrated by physicist David Chandler gives one of the best views of cut steel beam shooting upwards and outwards, not falling down through the line of gravity. Keeping in mind the massive scale of the towers (nearly a football field wide,) it must be remembered that what seem like tiny sticks are 10-foot long pieces of two-foot wide steel beam and larger, of which even the smallest would weigh nearly one ton.

Flock And Other Tech Firms Decline Senate Testimony On Mass Surveillance

Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley and the heads of Axon Enterprise, Motorola Solutions and Verkada all declined invitations to testify before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Wednesday, as senators from both parties pressed on the surveillance networks their cameras feed. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who chairs the Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, called the no-shows "so typical."

Democrats weren't any happier. "For the Flock CEOs, obviously they're nervous about being on camera," said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) went further: "Their refusal to come forward and answer questions is a sign that they have something to hide, and they are refusing to be accountable."

Instead, the panel heard from Lindsey Isaacs, a Florida woman who spent 13 days in jail after Flock's system wrongly flagged her car as involved in a fatal crash. She was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide. The charges have since been dropped.

As The Epoch Times notes further, While the license plate-reading cameras developed by Flock have gotten the most airtime in recent weeks - prompting nationwide, viral moments of activist vigilantes destroying or disabling the cameras amid public opposition to the technology - competitors at Axon Enterprise and Motorola offer similar options for police and local governments.

The Los Angeles Police Department is currently planning to roll out a 10-year contract with Axon, a $235 million arrangement that would equip America's second-largest metropolis with more than 1,600 license plate readers.

For municipalities, companies like Flock, Axon, and Motorola offer a potential melding of technology and traditional surveillance tech to reduce crime and make roadways safer. But the cameras they operate have boosted a growing artificial intelligence-powered surveillance network accessible by thousands of U.S. law enforcement agencies, which critics say runs afoul of the Fourth Amendment's protections against unreasonable search and seizure.

Hawley warned during the hearing that, if not addressed, this would have troubling implications for Americans.

"This is still the United States of America, and it shouldn't be that when you walk out your door in the morning, you just have to agree in assent and accept the fact that you're going to be on camera morning, noon, and night," Hawley said.

"You'll be tracked by anybody and everybody in the world. You'll have no privacy whatsoever. You'll be tracked when you take your kids to school and tracked when you go to church and tracked when you go to the grocery store."

Some high-profile abuses of the data collected from these cameras have made headlines.

In one recent case, Indianapolis authorities announced that five police officers had been charged with misusing data from Flock.

"The allegation is that the officers were searching or running the license plate information and tracking individuals through the Flock system. Very often times they had direct relationships with these individuals," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears explained after these charges were announced.

Meanwhile, lawmakers have demonstrated increased interest in the issue in recent weeks.
