The Paxton Grit - His eye and facial injuries, a decade apart, each requiring extensive medical intervention and physical, social, and vision setbacks did not deter him. College, law school, and success as an attorney (including AG of Texas) requires endless hours of reading and writing. His good eye deserves a medal!
"Those just tuning into the GOP leader's rise are resurfacing an old question: Why does he appear to have a lazy eye or drooping eyelid on the right side of his face?
"The droop, according to Paxton, was caused by an injury he received as a child. The lazy eye, he said, was caused by an injury in college.
"Paxton told the Houston Chronicle in 2016 that at the age of 12, another boy threw a berry at him during a game of hide-and-seek. In a fluke, the errant berry left the would-be attorney general virtually blind and forced him to spend weeks immobile to save his vision.
"Paxton said the treatment took a toll on his health.
"I lost 30 or 40 pounds, so I couldn't walk when I got out of the hospital, so I had to learn to walk again, and then I had to fight my way back into staying in that grade," he said at the time.
"He would later undergo surgery to try to correct the problem.
"Years later, when he was a freshman at Baylor University, Paxton said he suffered another injury to his face. During an intense game of basketball, someone elbowed him in the right eye. The blow shattered facial bones and doctors needed to wire his skull back together, he said.
"The injuries and treatments left Paxton with two different-colored eyes — the left one green and right one brown, shaded by an eyelid that droops — and permanent changes to his facial expressions. The left eye remains his good eye."
