“The lord whose oracle is at Delphi neither speaks nor conceals, but gives a sign.”

The speakers are touring Delphi and arguing about why the ancient oracles were poetic and obscure while the oracle of Plutarch’s own day speaks in plain prose.

One of them cites the Heraclitus line as a familiar saying, then adds that the god uses the Pythia for our hearing the way the sun uses the moon for our seeing: the message arrives through an instrument, not as direct speech.

Delphi’s reputation was precisely that its answers were true but riddling —

The god does not hand over a clear proposition (legei), and he does not simply hide the answer (kryptei). He signifies (semainei): the words are a sign that still has to be read.

“nature loves to hide,”

The oracle neither lectures nor withholds; it forces the hearer to do the interpreting.

Completed on 25 November 1922. The fire comes out of Muspilli and grasps the tree of life. A cycle is completed, but it is the cycle within the world egg.

A strange God, the unnameable God of the solitary, is incubating it.

New creatures form from the smoke and ashes.

Muspilli (also spelled Muspelheim or Muspell) is a realm from Norse mythology.

It is the domain of fire, home of the fire giants (the Muspilli), ruled by the fire giant Surtr.

In the myths, Muspilli is the fiery counterpart to Niflheim (the realm of ice and mist).

At Ragnarök, the end of the world, Surtr and the fire giants emerge from Muspilli and set the world ablaze, burning the world tree Yggdrasil and the earth itself.

In the inscription Jung wrote for the page-135 mandala (“The fire comes out of Muspilli and grasps the tree of life…”), he is using this image of primordial fire from Muspilli consuming or transforming the tree of life—an image of destructive yet creative fire that completes a cycle within the “world egg.”

But the tree doesn't look on fire.

You’re right—the tree in the painting doesn’t look literally on fire.

Jung’s inscription is symbolic, not a literal description of the image.

In the language of his Red Book (and later psychology), “fire” often stands for a transformative, numinous, or destructive-creative force rather than visible flames.

The phrase “the fire comes out of Muspilli and grasps the tree of life” is his own interpretive gloss on the completed painting: the fiery principle of Muspilli (the Norse realm of fire and world-ending conflagration) is imagined as seizing or working upon the tree/axis mundi, completing a cycle inside the “world egg.”

What you actually see—the central star/flower, the blue rings, the rooted tree, the animals, the checkered ground—is the visual expression of that process, not a scene of a burning tree.

The fire is in the meaning he attached to it, not painted as orange flames.
