Paul Manafort judge seals sidebar discussion that followed question on special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Trump campaign
The judge at ex-Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort's trial has sealed a discussion with lawyers that ensued after Manfort's deputy Rick Gates was asked by a defense attorney whether special counsel Robert Mueller's team had questioned him about his campaign work.
Judge T.S. Ellis said he sealed a portion of the sidebar conference he held with prosecutors and Manafort's lawyers because allowing it to be seen by the public "would reveal substantative evidence pertaining to an ongoing government investigation."
Manafort is on trial for alleged crimes that are unrelated to the 2016 presidential election. But Mueller is continuing to investigate Trump campaign officials for possible collusion with Russians who were trying to interfere with that election.
