Concur to a point, but consider that so many people that became addicted to opiates did due to being over-prescribed them by doctors for a medical condition. This connects to the deceitful marketing practices to doctors by Purdue Pharma.
Not an expert, but afaik, the current opioid addiction rates are far beyond historical averages, which lead one to the conclusion that it's more than reckless behavior involved.
