Pipeline Spills More Than 8,000 Gallons of Jet Fuel Into Indiana River

A pipeline spilled more than 8,000 gallons of jet fuel into an Indiana river, The Associated Press reported Sunday.

The affected river was St. Marys River in Decatur, which is a town of 9,500 people about 100 miles from Indianapolis.

Cleaning the spill could take weeks, Decatur Mayor Kenneth L. Meyer told the Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Journal Gazette.

The spill was first reported Friday night in a safety warning issued by the Decatur Police Department urging residents to avoid the area around the spill, local news outlet WANE reported Saturday.

Houston-based Buckeye Pipe Line Company, L.P., which owns the pipeline, confirmed the spill to WANE Saturday.

Company officials said there had been a failure Friday evening that had caused the spill.

"One of their workers discovered a pressure drop, went immediately to check on it and immediately shut it down," Allen County Homeland Security Director Bernie Beier told The Journal Gazette.

The pipeline will remain shut off until it is repaired and safe to operate, and Buckeye's Emergency Response Team worked to control the spill and clean the area, WANE reported. The company is investigating the cause of the failure.

Beier told The Journal Gazette that booms were used to contain the spread of the fuel, which was being vacuumed off the top of the river.

"So the goal is to get as much of the product or the fuel off the top of the river before the rains get heavier, the waters rise and the currents get faster," Beier explained. "When the water becomes more turbulent, anything off the top tends to get sucked down with logs, sticks and debris. And they're really making great progress, they're getting a lot of fuel off the water," Beier said.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also monitoring air quality around the spill site and the water quality downstream, The Associated Press reported.

However, Adams County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director John August told WANE that drinking water in Decatur shouldn't be impacted, because it is sourced from wells and not the river.

He said that the air might smell strange but that there was no danger.

Police warned Decatur residents not to smoke or light flames near the river, WANE reported.

For river-advocacy-group Save Maumee President Abigail Frost-King, the spill was a wake-up call about the importance of protecting rivers.

"I don't want there to come a time when things are too polluted that it may be too late," Frost-King told The Journal Gazette.

This is the second pipeline spill to impact an Indiana waterway within the past six months.

A pipeline owned by Marathon Petroleum Corporation leaked 42,000 gallons of diesel into Big Creek in Posey Creek, Indiana in March.

The spill also comes as there is increased mobilization against new oil and gas pipelines over concerns about their local environmental impact and contribution to climate change.

A Twitter account dedicated to opposing the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline in Virginia and West Virginia posted a link to news of the Indiana spill with a message for Virginia Governor Ralph Northam.

Rebels Ramp up Civilian Attacks, Incur Heavy Losses in Idlib

Damascus (GPA) – Russian and Syrian forces struck over 100 jihadist targets across Idlib and Hama in the last 48 hours as part of their recently launched siege to liberate the last of opposition-held territory from terror attacks, strikes, and kidnappings aimed at intimidating civilians and stalling an eventual defeat.

At the request of Damascus, Russia assisted Syrian forces in launching several airstrikes across the territory in the northern Al-Ghab plain starting Saturday morning and continuing through Sunday afternoon.

The Syrian Army successfully destroyed an ammunition depot and armored vehicle belonging to the Al-Ezza brigades in the Kafr Zita countryside as they struck various hideouts and locations of Jabhat al-Nusra and their allies Sunday. According to Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a state media news agency, the army unit also successfully destroyed shelling launching pads belonging to the brigade, where terrorists would launch shells towards residential areas.

Among the locations targeted include Jisr al-Shughour, just west of Idlib, where terrorists on Thursday met with White Helmets militants to discuss plans to stage another chemical attack. According to SANA, militants from the “Turkistani Party” and “Hai’et Tahrir al-Sham” have coordinated with White Helmets to identify target locations to launch false flag chemical attacks.

These are aimed at framing Damascus and ushering in a military response from the US, France, and UK which stated they would retaliate against “any further use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.”

Two killed after armed militants storm Libya’s state oil corporation HQ in Tripoli

Two workers at Libya's National Oil Corporation (NOC) have been killed after a militant attack on the company’s headquarters in Tripoli on Monday, according to local law enforcement. They say two of the attackers were also killed.

"The death toll so far is two killed from NOC staff and two attackers," Ahmed Ben Salim, a spokesman for the Special Deterrence Force, told Reuters.

Earlier on Monday, witnesses reported hearing explosions and gunfire, with smoke rising from close to the NOC offices. Security officials said they were attempting to deal with militants attacking the building.

Security forces took up positions around the offices in central Tripoli, while surrounding roads were cordoned off. Witnesses said they saw ambulances leaving the site. A member of staff from a hotel next to the NOC offices said that he had heard around five blasts.

US Report Shows China’s Infringement on Academic Freedom on US College Campuses

Academic freedom at U.S. universities is under siege because of interference by Beijing, according to a report by a Washington-based research organization.

Anastasya Lloyd-Damnjanovic, a researcher at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, detailed Beijing’s tactics in a 143-page report titled, “A Preliminary Study of PRC Political Influence and Interference Activities in American Higher Education.”

China has ranked first for eight consecutive years as the top country of origin for foreign students studying at U.S. colleges and universities in the United States. That includes 350,755 students from China on American campuses in the 2016-2017 academic year, according to Lloyd-Damnjanovic’s report.

Lloyd-Damnjanovic interviewed more than 100 college faculty members, in addition to many college students and administrators, between December 2017 and June 2018. Additionally, she consulted academic studies, official reports, and news reports, to draw her conclusions.

Her research revealed that Chinese diplomats stationed in the United States often tried to influence speech at U.S. colleges about China, either by probing or using intimidating forms of conversation with faculty and staffers.

Macron's Envoy to Attend Meeting of 'Small Group' on Syria in Geneva - Sources

GENEVA (Sputnik) - Special envoy of French President Emmanuel Macron on the Syrian issue Francois Senemaud will attend the meeting of the so-called Small Group on Syria with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on September 14 in Geneva, two sources close to the talks told Sputnik on Monday.

Senemaud was named Macron's personal representative for Syria in June. Previously he served as the French ambassador to Iran.

"French special envoy for Syria will come for the small group meeting," one source close to the talks told Sputnik.

The other source confirmed that Senemaud would attend the talks.

US Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey and Special Envoy Joel Rayburn will also attend the Small Group's meeting with de Mistura, according to the State Department.

De Mistura will meet with senior diplomats from the Small Group on Syria — Egypt, France, Germany, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States — a few days after the consultations with the guarantor states of de-escalation zones in Syria — Russia, Turkey and Iran — in Geneva. The talks with guarantors are taking place on September 10-11 with focus on the constitutional commission creation. Idlib situation is also likely to be reviewed.

With the small group, de Mistura will also discuss the United Nations' effort to establish a constitutional committee in the country.

The decision to set up the commission, tasked with introducing changes to the country’s constitution, was made at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian resort city of Sochi in January. De Mistura, who is in charge of forming the commission, is expected to single out some 40 people from 150 candidates from guarantor countries, government, opposition groups and civil society.

Russia Accuses US Of Using Phosphorus Bombs In Syria’s Deir Ezzor Province. Pentagon Denies

The US Air Force used phosphorous bombs to deliver a strike on the settlement of the ISIS-held village of Hajin in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor on September 8, chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties Vladimir Savchenko said on September 10.

“On September 8, 2018, two F-15 warplanes of the US air force delivered airstrikes on the settlement of Hajin with the use of phosphorous bombs. The airstrikes caused heavy fires. Information about casualties and damages is being verified,” Savchenko stated adding adding that the use of munitions containing yellow phosphorus is prohibited by an additional protocol to the Geneva Convention of 1949.

Pentagon spokesman Commander Sean Robertson commented on this statement claiming that the US Department of Defense has no information about the use of phosphorous bombs in Deir Ezzor province.

“None of the military units in the area are even equipped with white phosphorous munitions of any kind,” he told the Russian news agency TASS.

Last weekend, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are making final preparations to kick off a long-awated offensive on the ISIS-held pocket of Haijn in the Euphrates Valley. The report came amid an increased number of aistrikes by the US-led coalition on ISIS targets in the area.

After a while your group starts telling you you’re crazy and evil because you remain skeptical of your first friend’s ability to see the room in pitch darkness, despite his assertive tone of voice and despite the fact that everyone else believes it.

Western public discourse about Syria is very much the same. All the time I get people coming up yelling at me about what a butcher Bashar al-Assad is, how he loves gassing children because he’s an evil monster, how he’s killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in his own country out of sheer sadism, and all I can say to them is, you don’t know that. You don’t know any of those things, you’re just pretending you do because that’s what everyone else is doing. I know you don’t know any of those things because you’re looking at the same information landscape as I am, and it’s chock full of war propaganda. The media matrix is too full of obvious psyops meant to manufacture public consent for military interventionism in Syria for any westerner to have a clear idea of what’s actually happening in that country.

And we know this for a fact, as sure as you know when you’re in a dark room. Take the time CNN knowingly staged a fake, scripted interview with a seven year-old Syrian girl last year and passed it off to its audience as a real interview.

Senator Black: Eliminating terrorists in Idleb necessary not only for Syria but for entire world

Moscow, SANA- US Senator Richard Black affirmed on Sunday the need to eliminate the terrorist organizations in Syria, warning that the continued presence of terrorists in the province of Idleb threatens the security of the region and the entire world.

In an interview with Russian Sputnik agency, Black said that “Idleb must be liberated not only for the future of Syria, but for the future of civilized mankind.”

The Senator dismissed the West’s accusations against the Syrian government over the use of chemical weapons, pointing out that credible journalists such as Seymour Hersh investigated the alleged attacks with toxic gases and revealed their falsity.

“I’ve studied each of these gas attack provocations. Every one of them has been carried out by the terrorists, often in conjunction with Turkey or with other foreign intelligence agencies,” he pointed out.

When Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s 2018 Democratic opponent ran for city council in El Paso, Texas and then for Congress in a heavily-Hispanic district, he was Beto.

When he was captain of the crew team at a prestigious Ivy League university a decade earlier, he was Rob.

The Irish-American O’Rourke has long explained that “Beto,” the Hispanic nickname for his given name Robert, was a nickname given to him in infancy that “stuck.”

“My parents have called me Beto from day one,” he told CNN after Cruz released an ad attacking his adopted name, “and it’s just — it’s kind of a nickname for Robert in El Paso. It just stuck.”…

…But it apparently didn’t stick when O’Rourke, the son of an influential El Paso judge, was part of the crew team at Columbia University. At least three articles in two separate publications show that while attending the school, O’Rourke went by “Rob” or “Robert.”
