in 1982 Humulin was introduced, it was human insulin produced by bacteria.

these were genetically modified e. coli bacteria. not all e.coli are harmful to humans, they chose one of the benign ones and spliced in genetic material from human pancreatic beta cells.

this modified e.coli bacteria got loose, surprise surprise!

when a human is infected with this bacteria it may caue an autoimmune response against the invader.

HOWEVER, the invader looks like a human pancreatic beta cell to the immune system and so the pancreas is attacked and the human develops Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults
