Gas explosions occur when the house gets filled with gas, the Explosive / Flammable Limits are reached, then boom. Sometimes the force of the explosion uses up the oxygen extinguishing fire. Read up on Red Adair and how he extinguished the oil rig fires in the Middle East with Dynamite and explosives. No oxygen, fire can't burn. In essence the fire burns itself out in the explosion.

I'm guessing Kerry still has some sort of security clearance, that would not make him a "Private Citizen", these people are beyond stupid.
That's who John Waynes character was based on. He fought oil well fires here in the States, became an expert at extinguishing them with explosives. That's why they sent him over to the ME when they lit all those rigs off after Desert Storm.
