The Justice Department's former second-ranking official yesterday described the department under Attorney General Edwin Meese III as "a world of Alice in Wonderland" in which Meese perceived no problem with his conduct, while the former criminal division chief said Meese would have been indicted if he had been "an ordinary public official."

…this gives you some idea [of] the flavor of what life was like in the Department of Justice. It was a world of Alice in Wonderland, a world of illusion . . . . A world in which up was down and down was up, in was out and out was in, happy was sad and sad was happy, rain was sunshine and sunshine was rain, hot was cold and cold was hot."
