VIEW LARGER + Papa Gino’s has abruptly closed dozens of stores in New England and the company refuses to give comment.

The company’s website today lists 97 stores, but stores have been closed and workers were not notified of closures according to reports and social media. The company's website states, "Today, you can still get that authentic Italian taste at over 150 Papa Gino's restaurants across New England."

The company is now based in Dedham, MA and was founded in 1961 when the chain opened its first pizzeria originally called Piece O' Pizza, in East Boston.

In 1968, the company changed the name to Papa Gino's and started to expand throughout Boston.

Papa Gino's most recent Tweet was made at 1:30 PM on Sunday "Who doesn’t love FREEdom? We sure do! Join us for an entire #SeasonOfFreedom with the Patriots as we invite Papa Gino’s Rewards Members to participate in more exciting giveaways including FREE pizza and a chance to win game tickets."

The company also posted to it's Twitter jobs page that it is continuing to hire despite the store closures and layoffs.
