It is plasma.

Air is a mixture of gasses. When heated gasses conduct electricity it becomes plasma.

So microwaves have a travel distance which exceeds the arc distance off the corona of the Tesla coil.

What you described likely suggests that the microwaves and the high frequency electricity travel in tandem
