Can you explain the "Shadow trails" or "Black Trails"?

 

The first time I've seen them was I was heading in to Fargo in the evening time as the sun was going down in the west. I was coming in from the east from Minneapolis on the interstate.

 

I happened to notice that the contrail/chemtrail that seemed to be lingering in the air was black.

 

As I kept watching, I noticed there was a plane following that "Shadow Trail' and putting down a white "contrail" directly over the same trajectory as the "Shadow Trail".

 

Any thoughts?

I was thinking sometimes it's a catalyst. Planes that go before, spray down an invisible layer that can only be seen when the Sun is at a certain angle that is lower in the sky. Then secondary planes bring in another chemical that combines with the first?
