Seven new spider species from Brazil named after seven famous fictional spider characters

Several literary classics from the fantasy genre are further immortalised and linked together thanks to a Brazilian research team who named seven new spiders after them.
Spider characters from A Song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, H. P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu and the children's favourite Charlotte's Web and Little Miss Spider each gave a name to a new small cave-dwelling six-eyed spider inhabiting northern Brazil.
Discovered in iron caves across the state of Pará, northern Brazil, the new species belong to the same Neotropical genus Ochyrocera. They are described in a new research article published in the open access journal ZooKeys by Dr Antonio Brescovit, Dr Igor Cizauskas and Leandro Mota - all affiliated with Instituto Butantan, Sao Paulo.
Interestingly, while all seven previously unknown species prefer staying in the shadows underground, none of them has the adaptations characteristic for exclusively cave-dwelling organisms, such as loss of pigmentation and reduced or missing eyes. They are classified as edaphic troglophile species, which means that they are capable of completing their life cycle away from sunlight, but are not bound to the deepest recesses. Often crawling near the surface, they can even be spotted outside the caves. To describe the species, the scientists collected about 2,000 adult specimens following a 5-year series of field collection trips.
The list of 'fantasy' spiders begins with Ochyrocera varys named after Lord Varys from George R. R. Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire. Lord Varys is also known as the Spider because of his manipulative skills and ability to 'weave' and command his networks of eyes-and-ears across two continents.
The name of Ochyrocera atlachnacha refers to the Spider God Atlach-Nacha from the universe created by H. P. Lovecraft. Atlach-Nacha is a giant spider with a human-like face which lives in the caves beneath a mountain and spins a web believed to link the world with the Dreamlands.
Two species are named after spider characters from the classic works by J. R. R. Tolkien. Ochyrocera laracna is a species named after the well-known giant spider Laracna (Shelob in English) who attacks main characters Frodo and Sam on their way to Mordor in The Lord of the Rings' second volume - The Two Towers.
On the other hand, the Brazilian spider's sibling - Ochyrocera ungoliant - is linked to Laracna's mother. Ungoliant appears in Tolkien's book The Silmarillion, whose events take place prior to those of The Lord of the Rings' second volume The Two Towers. According to the story, Ungoliant translates to Dark Spider in Elvish.
Another staple in the 20th-century fantasy literature, the Harry Potter series, written by J. K. Rowling, also enjoys the attention of the researchers. The species Ochyrocera aragogue is an explicit reference to the talking Aragog, who lives in the dark recesses of the Forbidden Forest. In the second volume of the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, he confronts Harry Potter and Ron Weasley.
The authors do not fail to pay tribute to much less violent spiders known from popular children books. David Kirk's Little Miss Spider inspires the name of Ochyrocera misspider. The character is remembered with her words: "We have to be good to bugs; all bugs."
The Ochyrocera charlotte species refers to Charlotte, the spider from E. B. White's classic Charlotte's Web who befriends the main character - Wilbur the pig.
It is highly likely that there are many species and populations of this group of spiders yet to be discovered in the Neotropics, since the lack of previous studies in the region. However, the area and its biodiversity are impacted by mining.

Owners of arms-carrying ship stopped off Crete deny wrongdoing
A representative of the shipping company that owns the "Andromeda", which was stopped on Jan 7 by the Greek Coastguard, leading to the discovery of 29 containers full of explosives and detonators on board, said on Jan 11 that there was nothing illegal about the shipment. The vessel was stopped off Crete as it was heading to Libya but captain Theodoros Rellos said that the ship should not have been seized and that its crew should not have been taken into custody. The eight crew members appeared before a prosecutor in Piraeus on Jan 11. Authorities claimed sea safety laws had been breached and that the ship had dozens of problems. The "Andromeda" was carrying 29 crates of explosives and other materials used in bomb making. The skipper told investigators that he had been ordered by the ship's owner to sail to the Libyan port of Misurata and not Djibouti, the destination listed in the ship's itinerary. According to the ongoing investigation "Andromeda" has also approached ports in Cyprus recently. Asked why the freighter had been sailing from port to port in the last two months laden with 410 tons of explosives, Rellos claimed that the ship had been chartered by two Turkish companies that owned the merchandise, but defaulted on their obligation to pay. The two Turkish companies did not pay also the toll for the Suez Canal so that the ship could use this to go to its destination in Djibouti. Due to the nature of the cargo it headed from anchorage to anchorage," Rellos said. Regarding claims by Andromeda's captain that he had been asked to take the cargo to Libya, Rellos said that this had been part of an effort to find reliable storage for the cargo, which was offered by Misurata port in Libya, but the company had opted not to go. Asked about the 102 safety concerns relating to the ship's seaworthiness cited by the Greek Coast Guard inspectors, Rellos said the ship was carrying out its last trip before it was to be dismantled in Turkey.

Basically, they’re working the state legislatures to get them to agree on having their state electors vote not for the their own state’s popular vote winner, but on the NATIONAL popular vote winner. In essence, coastal states and cities with large populations will dominate. The compact won’t come into effect until the states that vote yes on it reach 270 electoral votes. Currently, they’re sitting at 165 electoral votes from the states that already passed it. I believe this is a workaround for the Democrats to steal the next Presidential election. Japan’s nuclear watchdog urges discharge of Fukushima radioactive water into ocean

"A final decision to release over a million tons of radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima plant should be made “within this year,” as its operator is running out of land to store the waste, Japan’s nuclear regulator said.
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the Fukushima plant, is short on time to decide what to do with some one million tons of radioactive water it has been storing in hundreds of tanks at the plant, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority [NRA] Chairman Toyoshi Fuketa told the mayor of Naraha, a town near the stricken facility, on Thursday.
“We will face a new challenge if a decision [about the release] is not made within this year,” Fuketa said, as reported by Japan Today.
Toxic water at the plant is being diluted through a processing system that can remove 62 types of radioactive material except tritium, which, the NRA chairman claimed, is totally safe to the environment.
“It is scientifically clear that there will be no impact on marine products or to the environment,” Fuketa assured the mayor.
TEPCO has been constantly adding new water tanks to store the water it uses to keep the melted fuel rods cool, as well as the groundwater contaminated in the process. According to Japan’s nuclear watchdog, there are currently 650 tanks at the facility that store about one million tons of water. As of July last year there were 580 tanks and 770,000 tons of liquid.
The increase means TEPCO and the Japanese government have very little time before the capacity to hold water at the plant is overstretched. Fuketa estimates it may take an additional “two or three years” to prepare for the dumping after the decision is made.
“(TEPCO) has been building new tanks, but it will eventually run out of land,” an unnamed NRA official said, according to The Japan Times.
While both the NRA and TEPCO claim the tritium-contaminated water does not pose any risk to maritime life, local fishermen’s unions have been staunchly opposing the pending release, arguing the release of the radioactive water would stir speculation and make their work impossible.
Last July, TEPCO announced the decision was “already made” to release the tritium-contaminated water, with the company’s chairman Takashi Kawamura saying TEPCO “could have decided much earlier.” However, after facing a backlash from local fishermen, the effort has stalled without ever going ahead.
Apart from the potential massive discharge of radioactive water into the sea, the facility is slowly endangering the environment with regular leaks and groundwater contamination. Last September, TEPCO admitted that six of its indicators malfunctioned and were showing substantially higher groundwater levels than in reality. As a result, the company said the contaminated water might have been leaking into the soil for five months before it discovered the problem.
In March 2011, a massive tsunami triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake caused a fuel meltdown in three of the plant’s reactors, which led to massive release of radiation. The Fukushima disaster is regarded as the most serious nuclear catastrophe since the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986."

Rocosmos lost contact with its first rocket, due to an embarrassing programming error. It was carrying research satellites from a number of countries around the world.
Meanwhile, a second launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, intended to overcome missile defense systems, was successfully launched from the Kapustin Yar test site in the Astrakhan region of southern Russia.
This series of launches among four of the world’s major space programs has raised some eyebrows, especially in the wake of the disclosure of the Pentagon’s UFO program. These five launches occurred within five days of each other, four of which contained satellites.
