Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau flew to the island of St. Lucia today to meet leaders of 16 Caribbean governments. According to aides, Mr. Trudeau will reaffirm Canada's commitment to double aid to the region in the next five years.
The conference, sponsored by Prime Minister John Compton of St. Lucia, will be the second meeting between Caribbean leaders and Mr. Trudeau in two years. Officials said it reflected the importance Canada attaches to the region not only in terms of economics and security but also in terms of differentiating itself from the United States.
Canadian assistance to the Caribbean currently accounts for the greatest share of Canadian aid to any part of the world in terms of distribution on a per-capita basis. Moved Before Reagan Plan
Mr. Trudeau has said that the current commitment of $400 million was assumed before President Reagan's appeal last year for a coordinated Caribbean Basin Initiative in which the United States, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia would undertake independent but coordinated programs to spur development in the Caribbean.

OTTAWA โ Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is getting used to international media attention and now he is getting tabloid headlines for vacationing with his family at an exclusive resort in the Caribbean.
The visit to Nevis, a small island that is part of the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, was billed as a private family vacation, but it has become fodder for celebrity gossip website TMZ.
There was also room for some diplomatic business as Trudeau met, and was bid farewell at his Jan. 8 departure, by the prime minister of the islands, Timothy Harris, and the country's foreign affairs minister.
Local newspaper the St. Kitts and Nevis Observer published a picture of the three men posing in front of a Government of Canada aircraft.
The paper said Trudeau spent 10 days on Nevis with his wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau and the couple's three children, Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien at an undisclosed location.
Since Trudeau became prime minister last year he has gained considerable exposure in the international media.
