LA college district abolishes free speech zones as part of lawsuit settlement

A Los Angeles college student who sued his school for allegedly curbing his right to free speech after it prevented him from passing out copies of the U.S. Constitution was vindicated in court this week.

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), which represents nine schools, including Pierce College, agreed on Wednesday to settle a lawsuit filed against them last year by student Kevin Shaw after he was barred from passing out copies of the document because he wasn’t in the school’s designated “free speech zone,” which measured 616 square feet or about the size of three parking spaces.

As a part of the settlement, the tiny area marked for students to exercise their first amendment rights will be abandoned altogether, revoking a district-wide policy that declared all property on the district’s nine campuses to be “non-public forums” with speech restrictions. As part of the settlement, LACCD will pay Shaw’s $225,000 in attorney fees.

“Though it was not without its difficulties, this experience has left me optimistic about the guiding principles of my country,” said Shaw in a statement provided to Fox News. “Folks of all political dispositions rallied behind this case to declare in no uncertain terms: freedom of speech is essential to the educational process.”

You basically had to actively search to find any mention of the Opportunity and Revitalization Council, a $100 billion initiative to deliver growth in urban communities.

“With the creation of today’s council, the resources of the whole federal government will be leveraged to rebuild low-income and impoverished neighborhoods that have been ignored by Washington in years past,” the president said at a Wednesday event in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, where an executive order establishing the council was signed.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the new program will offer breaks on capital gains taxes to investors in distressed zones — obviously a huge boost to predominately black and minority neighborhoods, which are still lagging in indicators like wage growth.

I think we can all agree this is a pretty big deal. Not only will it take a $100 billion step toward alleviating poverty in urban communities, it does it with investment as opposed to handouts. All of this without any tax money.

So why is it almost impossible to find news about this anywhere?

Egyptian President: Migration is NOT a human right

Egypt’s President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi recently spoke at a forum, where he in plain language told those who have moved or want to move to Europe.

“If you go to another country, you must follow their laws and culture, if not, don’t go there”, he said.

In November, al-Sisi attended the World Youth Forum in Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. He was asked how he sees the fact that several European countries are now closing the door to those who want to migrate to Europe.

His answer was clear:

“Instead of asking me why Europe closes the door to us, you should ask why people in Afghanistan don’t take better care of their country. The same applies to Pakistan, Egypt, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and Somalia.

“You demand to migrate with your culture which, from your side, is not the least negotiable to change. You say this is who we are and you must accept us on the basis of human rights.”

“If you migrate to another country as a guest, then you should completely follow their laws, ways, traditions and culture.

“If you are not willing to do that, you should not migrate. You cannot expect the countries to open their doors and allow you to come in and change and create problems”, he concluded.

Former Sen. Joe Lieberman joins China's ZTE to ease national security concerns amid lawmakers' distrust

ZTE reportedly hires former Sen. Joe Lieberman to spearhead a national security assessment of its products.

"There are obviously still concerns about the safety of their products or the extent to which their products could be used to compromise American security in any way or even individual security," Lieberman tells Politico in an interview. ZTE has "decided to really try to get ahead of those concerns and be in a position to answer them," he says.

Lieberman adds that while he will register as a lobbyist, he will be focusing on his national security evaluation and won't actually lobby for ZTE on Capitol Hill.

‘Andi Mack’ (Disney) Actor Stoney Westmoreland Arrested For Planning Liaison With 13-Year-Old

Westmoreland was arrested Friday in Utah, where Andi Mack films. According to TV station KSL, court documents state he was arrested for investigation of enticing a minor by Internet or text, a second-degree felony, and four counts of dealing in materials harmful to a minor, a third-degree felony.

An affidavit filed in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City indicated Westmoreland began communicating online with a user he believed was underage “on an Internet app used for dating and meeting people for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.”

Australia recognizes West Jerusalem as Israeli capital, won't move embassy

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Saturday morning local time that Australia would recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

However, he declared that Australia would hold off on moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and acknowledged Palestinian demands to a capital in East Jerusalem as part of an eventual peace agreement.

“Australia now recognizes West Jerusalem, being the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of government, is the capital of Israel,” Morrison said at a press conference in Sydney.

“We look forward to moving our embassy to West Jerusalem when practical, in support of and after final status determination,” he added while affirming his administration’s commitment to a two-state solution.

Morrison's predecessor, Malcolm Turnbull, had ruled out following the U.S. in moving Australia's embassy to Jerusalem.
