>The leaven Jesus appointed…

A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump [Gal. 5:9].

"In Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, leaven is always used as a principle of evil. In Matthew 13:33, when the woman hid leaven in three measures of meal, the leaven was not the gospel. It may be the kind of a “gospel” that is passing around today as legal tender, but it is still evil. In fact, Paul says that it is no gospel at all. The Lord Jesus warned His disciples of the leaven of the Pharisees (see Matt. 16:6). I think we need to be warned today of the leaven of legalism. It is an awful thing. Legalism says that when Christ died on the cross for you and me over nineteen hundred years ago, He did not give us a full package of salvation, but that I have to go through a ritual of baptism or seek something else from the Holy Spirit to get the rest of it. My friend, I received it all when I accepted Christ. Now I may have experiences after I am saved, but that does not add to my salvation. Christ is the One who wrought out our salvation. The Lord Jesus said that the woman would take the leaven and hide it in three measures of meal, symbolic of the gospel. In other words, leaven has been hidden in the gospel—and that makes it palatable to the natural man.

I was brought up in the South, and I never knew there was any kind of biscuits but hot biscuits. My mother used to bake them every day. Even yet I can see those biscuits in the dough stage, rising on the back of the stove. When they reached a certain height, she stuck them in the oven. They had leaven in them. When the biscuits were done, I would put butter and honey on them. There was nothing better! That is still my favorite dessert. There is a lot of leaven being put in the gospel today to make it more palatable. Natural man likes the leavened bread. It tastes good. However, we are warned not to do that." McGee, J. V. (1997). >Indwelling sin and evil present never depart the flesh

And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin [1 John 3:5].

"Only the Lord Jesus can take away sin. He came for that purpose.

Two things are important for us to see here. In John’s gospel he wrote, “… Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). He bore the penalty of sin. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Christ died for the sin of the world. Now here in John’s epistle he shows that Christ takes away the practice of sin in the life of the believer. Christ is the “propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2). What is the difference? Well, He died a redemptive death to pay the penalty of our sin, but He also died that He might deliver us from the power of sin right here and now.

“And in him is no sin.” The literal translation of this is: “in Him sin is not.” He died a redemptive death—He was our sin offering. He was without sin; He was without spot or blemish as was the Levitical sin offering. Therefore He is able to remove the guilt of sin and to provide the power to deliver us from the habit of sinning. He has given to us a new nature that we might live for Him today." McGee, J. V. (1997). Thru the Bible commentary (electronic ed., Vol. 5, p. 789). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.

Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world [Titus 2:12].

"God is not trying to reform this world; He is redeeming men who accept Christ. The gospel does not appeal to Christ–rejecting men to do better. When a person says, “I am going to try to do better,” I think he is a liar. If you have rejected Jesus Christ, you might as well try to get all you can out of this life, because this life is all that you are going to get….You might as well eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you’ll die. God doesn’t want to reform you; He wants to redeem you.

“Teaching us”—teaching means child–training. God is calling those who are His own, who are redeemed, to live for Him and to avoid “worldly lusts.”" McGee, J. V. (1991). It has often been pointed out that if a person really believes Genesis 1:1, he will not find it difficult to believe anything else recorded in the Bible. That is, if God really created all things, then He controls all things and can do all things.

Furthermore, this one verse refutes all of man’s false philosophies concerning the origin and meaning of the world:

(1) It refutes atheism, because the universe was created by God.

(2) It refutes pantheism, for God is transcendent to that which He created.

(3) It refutes polytheism, for one God created all things.

(4) It refutes materialism, for matter had a beginning.

(5) It refutes dualism, because God was alone when He created.

(6) It refutes humanism, because God, not man, is the ultimate reality.

(7) It refutes evolutionism, because God created all things.

Actually all such false philosophies are merely different ways of expressing the same unbelief. Each one proposes that there is no personal, transcendent God; that ultimate reality is to be found in the eternal cosmos itself; and that the development of the universe into its present form is contingent solely on the innate properties of its own components. In essence, each of the above philosophies embraces all the others. Dualism, for example, is a summary form of polytheism, which is the popular expression of pantheism, which presupposes materialism, which functions in terms of evolutionism, which finds its consummation in humanism, which culminates in atheism.

The entire system could well be called the system of atheistic evolutionary humanism. Other philosophical ideas could also be incorporated into the same monstrous structure: naturalism, uniformitarianism, deism, agnosticism, monism, determinism, pragmatism, and others. All are arrayed in opposition to the great truth—marvelously simple, and understandable to a child, yet inexhaustibly profound—that “in the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.”

False. He included himself in his prayer.

We have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.

“O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him. We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him. And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.

“As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth. Therefore the Lord has kept the disaster in mind, and brought it upon us; for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice. And now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made Yourself a name, as it is this day—we have sinned, we have done wickedly! WORD IS GOD—WORD BECAME FLESH—WORD REVEALED GOD

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God [John 1:1].

The Gospel of John introduces the Lord Jesus Christ with three tremendous statements:

“In the beginning was the Word,”

“And the Word was with God,”

“And the Word was God.”

“The Word” is one of the highest and most profound titles of the Lord Jesus Christ. To determine the exact meaning is not easy. Obviously the Lord Jesus Christ is not the logos of Greek philosophy; rather He is the memra of the Hebrew Scriptures. Notice how important the Word is in the Old Testament. For instance, the name for Jehovah was never pronounced. It was such a holy word that they never used it at all. But this is the One who is the Word and, gathering up everything that was said of Him in the Old Testament, He is now presented as the One “In the beginning.” This beginning antedates the very first words in the Bible, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” That beginning can be dated, although I do not believe that anyone can date it accurately—it is nonsense to say that it is 4004 B.C., as Ussher’s dating has it. It probably goes back billions and billions of years. You see, you and I are dealing with the God of eternity. When you go back to creation, He is already there, and that is exactly the way this is used—“in the beginning was the Word.” Notice it is not is the Word; it was not in the beginning that the Word started out or was begotten. Was (as Dr. Lenske points out) is known as a durative imperfect, meaning continued action. It means that the Word was in the beginning. What beginning? Just as far back as you want to go. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). Does that begin God? No, just keep on going back billions and trillions and “squillions” of years. I can think back to billions of years back of creation—maybe you can go beyond that—but let’s put down a point there, billions of years back of creation. He already was; He comes out of eternity to meet us. He did not begin. “In the beginning was the Word”—He was already there when the beginning was. “Well,” somebody says, “there has to be a beginning somewhere.” All right, wherever you begin, He is there to meet you, He is already past tense. “In the beginning was the Word”—five words in the original language, and there is not a man on topside of this earth who can put a date on it or understand it or fathom it. This first tremendous statement starts us off in space, you see.

The second statement is this, “and the Word was with God.” This makes it abundantly clear that He is separate and distinct from God the Father. You cannot identify Him as God the Father because He is with God. “But,” someone says, “if He is with God, He is not God.” The third statement sets us straight, “and the Word was God.” This is a clear, emphatic declaration that the Lord Jesus Christ is God. In fact, the Greek is more specific than this, because in the Greek language the important word is placed at the beginning of the sentence and it reads, “God was the Word.” That is emphatic; you cannot get it more emphatic than that. Do you want to get rid of the deity of Christ? My friend, you cannot get rid of it. The first three statements in John’s Gospel tie the thing down. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” McGee, J. V. (1991). >Jesus is the Father…

The Father is not the Son. The Son is not the Spirit.

“The everlasting Father”—Avi–ad, Father of eternity. This simply means that He is the Creator of all things, even time, the ages, and the far–off purpose of all things. As John said, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). In Colossians 1:16 Paul said, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.” Then in Hebrews 1:1–2 we read, “God…. hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds [ages].” The translation of the Greek word aioµn should be “ages” instead of “worlds,” and that is the thought in this title of His—Father of eternity.

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God [John 20:17].

…You will notice He was specific in calling God “my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” His relationship to the Father is different from our relationship to Him. We become the sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ, while Christ is a member of the Trinity, the eternal Son of God. He made this distinction here. McGee, J. V. (1991). (MATTHEW 6)

The Sermon on the Mount, part 2: Jesus presents models for giving, prayer, fasting, money, and trust.

I. JESUS TALKS ABOUT GIVING (6:1–4)

A. The rules (6:1–3)

1. Give sincerely (6:1): You will receive reward from your Father in heaven.

2. Give secretly (6:2–3): Calling attention to your giving will cause that to be your only reward.

B. The reward (6:4): Give your gifts in secret, and God will reward you openly.

II. JESUS TALKS ABOUT PRAYING (6:5–15)

A. Essentials in prayer (6:5–8)

1. Prayers God rejects (6:5, 7–8)

a. Boasting prayers (6:5) : Praying publicly brings reward from men only.

b. Babbling prayers (6:7–8): God knows what you need before you ask.

2. Prayers God receives (6:6): We should pray from the heart, in private.

B. Elements in prayer (6:9–15): Jesus lists nine aspects of prayer.

1. Faith (6:9a): “Our Father in heaven.”

2. Worship (6:9b): “May your name be honored.”

3. Expectation (6:10a): “May your kingdom come soon.”

4. Submission (6:10b): “May your will be done here on earth, just as it is in heaven.”

5. Petition (6:11): “Give us our food for today.”

6. Confession (6:12a): “And forgive us our sins.”

7. Compassion (6:12b, see also 14–15): “Just as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us.”

8. Dependence (6:13a): “And don’t let us yield to temptation.”

9. Acknowledgment (6:13b): “For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

III. JESUS TALKS ABOUT FASTING (6:16–18)

A. By hypocrites (6:16): They disfigure their faces to show people they are fasting.

B. By the humble (6:17–18): They comb their hair and wash their faces so only God knows what they are doing. Then the Father rewards them.

IV. JESUS TALKS ABOUT TREASURES (6:19–24)

A. Earthly treasures are insecure and corruptible (6:19, 22–24): No one can serve two masters, but all must choose between God and gold!

B. Heavenly treasures are secure and incorruptible (6:20–21): Where your treasure is, there your heart will be.

V. JESUS TALKS ABOUT TRUSTING (6:25–34)

A. The information (6:25): We are told not to worry about food or clothes, for life consists of more than these things.

B. The illustrations (6:26–30)

1. Consider the birds (6:26–27): They do not sow, reap, or store up food, yet God feeds them!

2. Consider the lilies (6:28–30): They don’t worry about clothes, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are!

C. The invitation (6:31–34): Put God in first place, and he will meet all your needs!

(1 JOHN 4)

John writes about discerning false prophets and loving one another.

I. LOCATE THE SPIRITS (4:1–6): We are to test those who claim to speak by the Spirit by asking whether their message comes from a false prophet, a demon, or from God.

A. The scriptural claim (4:1–2, 4, 6): All messages acknowledging that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh are of God.

B. The satanic claim (4:3, 5): All messages that do not are not of God.

II. LOVE THE SAINTS (4:7–21).

A. What love proves (4:7–11, 14, 19–21)

1. Our love for God is proven by our love for one another (4:7–8, 11, 19–21).

2. God’s love for us was proven by the sacrificial death of Christ (4:9–10, 14).

B. What love produces (4:12–13, 15–18)

1. God is joined to us (4:12, 15–16).

2. We are joined to him (4:13).

3. We are given confidence (4:17).

4. We are protected from fear (4:18).

II. PAUL’S WARNINGS TO THESE TWO CHURCHES (2:8–23): The apostle warns against four dangerous and destructive philosophies.

A. Gnosticism (2:8–10)

1. The fiction (2:8): The Gnostics diminish Christ to an angel.

2. The facts (2:9–10): Paul says Christ was God incarnate in bodily form.

B. Legalism (2:11–17)

1. Paul describes the love of Christ (2:11–15).

a. We have been crucified and raised to new life with him (2:11–12).

b. He has forgiven our sins (2:13).

c. He has blotted out the charges against us (2:14–15).

2. Paul describes the liberty in Christ (2:16–17): Because of this, believers should not criticize each other.

a. In matters of diet (2:16a): No one should condemn another believer for what he or she eats or drinks.

b. In matters of days (2:16b–17): No one should condemn another believer for not celebrating certain holy days, for these old rules were only shadows.
