Syrian surprise: How Trump's phone call changed the war

ANKARA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump’s declaration in a phone call with Tayyip Erdogan that he was pulling U.S. troops from Syria has stunned Turkey and left it scrambling to respond to the changing battlefield on its southern border.

In the phone call two weeks ago, Trump had been expected to deliver a standard warning to the Turkish president over his plan to launch a crossborder attack targeting U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in northeast Syria, U.S. officials say.

Instead, in the course of the conversation Trump reshaped U.S. policy in the Middle East, abandoning a quarter of Syrian territory and handing Ankara the job of finishing off Islamic State in Syria.

“Trump asked: ‘If we withdraw our soldiers, can you clean up ISIS?’”, a Turkish official told Reuters. He said Erdogan replied that Turkish forces were up to the task.

New York man charged in kidnapping of kids for Jewish sect

A New York man has been charged in the kidnapping of two children whose mother recently fled an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect in Guatemala.

The FBI arrested Aron Rosner of Brooklyn this week on charges accusing him of providing financial help to members of the religious group Lev Tahor in an international abduction scheme.

Rosner’s defence lawyer did not respond to an email seeking comment Thursday.

The FBI said in court filings that the children – 14-year-old Yante Teller and her 12-year-old brother Chaim Teller – were kidnapped on December 8 from their home in upstate New York and taken out of the country.

Surveillance footage shows the children walking out of the residence before 3am and entering a vehicle.

French yellow vests “are still mobilised” and will protest on Saturday and New Year’s Eve, organisers say

According to several of the Yellow Vest movement, protests will continue through January, including this Saturday and New Year’s Eve.

“The yellow vests are still mobilised,” Laetitia Dewalle, a spokeswoman of the Yellow Vests, said on Thursday.

Besides the seventh weekend of protests, another spokesman, Benjamin Cauchy, said protesters would be out on New Year’s Eve as well, “to show that the mobilisation will not end in the new year”, France24 reports.

Cauchy further added that if the concessions made so far by President Emmanuel Macron did not add up, “we will end up with a large-scale mobilisation in late January”.

Paris officials announced on Thursday that New Year’s Eve celebrations will go ahead on the Champs-Elysées as planned for the traditionally tens of thousands of tourists and locals ringing in the new year, despite the protests.

Tesla Appoints Two New Directors, Including Oracle Exec Larry Ellison

Oracle (ORCL) Executive Chairman Larry Ellison and Kathleen Wilson-Thompson, an executive at Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA), have joined the board of directors at Tesla (TSLA), which comes as part of a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla announced Friday.

Each joined the board as an independent director. Wilson-Thompson is the global head of human resources Walgreens Boots. Prior to that, she spent 17 years at Kellogg (K).

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk in September agreed to appoint a new chairman and two independent board members. That followed an SEC lawsuit, which alleged Musk misled investors when he sent a tweet in August about taking the company private at $420 a share. The tweet sent Tesla stock to a record high at the time.

Wall St. ekes out gains despite drag from tech stocks

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks rose on Friday, with gains in defensive sectors including consumer staples and real estate helping extend a two-day rally, although weakness in technology companies capped gains.

The final week of 2018 has seen wild swings in equities, starting off with Wall Street's worst-ever Christmas Eve drop, followed by Dow Jones Industrial Average's .DJI record 1,000-plus point surge on Wednesday and a stunning rally late on Thursday.

The defensive consumer staples .SPLRCS and real estate .SPLRCR stocks rose 0.81 percent and 0.65 percent, respectively, to lead the gainers among 11 major S&P sectors.

Technology stocks .SPLRCT, which had powered the rally earlier this year and were at the center of the recent pullback, were flat. Energy stocks .SPNY dipped 0.38 percent, suggesting caution.

Stocks could swing between gains and losses due to the volatility, but end-of-the-year window dressing and investors looking to buy stocks at attractive valuations should help the market said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities in New York.
