15 June 2015: Top UN executive Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen has been appointed as the new CEO of Plan International.

Ms Albrectsen is currently the UN Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Executive Director for Management at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). She replaces the current Plan International CEO Nigel Chapman and will assume office on 1 September.

 

Mr Liswood paid tribute to the outgoing CEO Mr Chapman, former Director of the BBC World Service, saying: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nigel for his commitment to Plan International since 2002, firstly as Chair of Plan UK until 2008, and for his leadership of Plan International since 2009. Over the past 6 years, Plan International has grown considerably in stature and reputation as an effective champion of child rights. He will leave Plan International at the end of August with our heartfelt appreciation for the positive changes he has brought about across the federation.”

Nigel’s appointment, which starts today (2 November), will comprise a three-year term. Nigel will work closely with the Council of Trustees and Nacro’s Chief Executive, Jacob Tas, to ensure that the charity effectively delivers its business objectives and remains focused on achieving its vision to change lives, strengthen communities and reduce crime.

Nigel’s most recent role was Chief Executive Officer at Plan International, a charity which works with children and their families to combat poverty in Europe, the Americas and Asia. He also chaired the Plan UK Board for six years from 2002 to 2008.

Prior to joining Plan International, Nigel spent most of his career at the BBC. During his time there he was Director, BBC World Service and Director, BBC Online. He also worked as a producer and editor on a number of leading news and current affairs programmes including being a founder member and later Deputy Editor of Newsnight.

Nigel, who left Plan International in August this year, is currently a trustee of the leading housing charity, Shelter UK. He was, until recently, a Member of the Board of the International Civil Society Centre.
