This is in part why I've been looking into the Mitre Corporation (located in McLean). They have a "little" project that involves keyword-monitoring on Twitter and plotting the results in near-realtime – it's touted as a "happiness" index

Sounds innocent, yes? But Mitre also has projects involving encouraging computers to "dream" as a tool for teaching them; low-kinetics anti-drone tech; battlefield apps; and a host of layers of a very tech-sophisticated onion.

Writing code for a happiness index based on keywords would have been impressive in the internet's earliest days, but it's way below Mitre's capacity now. Nothing in me believes that the Hedometer is a stand-alone product. It's just the tip of an iceberg that shows that Mitre is capable of monitoring vast data-rich platforms (like Twitter) and compiling specific realtime information that's quickly actionable, probably even automatically. Use these keywords in these combinations? Boom, gone.
