i'm from the DC area originally and my family was socially somewhat connected to mary and others involved. what you're saying was what my parents and many others assumed at the time. and as to her death – most people who were in that milieu don't think the police
caught the real killer. mary was in an absolute nest of CIA vipers – look no further than those snakes to find who murdered her.
good observations.
in part it's the dog too scared to bark. people spoke about it behind closed doors, but that entire swathe of DC society was spook-ridden, and there was a genuine, quite reasonable fear of being killed by a "random criminal."
