China’s HNA Group sells Manhattan building near Trump Tower amid national security concerns

HNA Group sold a building in Manhattan to help ease the embattled conglomerate’s debts and stave off US concerns about a Chinese company owning property near Trump Tower.

HNA completed the sale, the group said in a statement, without providing details.

Bisnow reported earlier that investor and real estate developer Jacob Chetrit and his sons bought the tower in a US$422 million transaction that resulted in a loss for HNA.

The Chinese company, which bought the tower for US$463 million with its partners before Donald Trump became president, had been trying to sell the property since at least early 2018.

Relatives of former Vice President Joe Biden supported then-candidate Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, the politician’s brother revealed this week.

In an interview with the Palm Beach Post published Monday, Frank Biden, 65, lambasted Clinton’s 2016 White House bid, claiming his older sibling would have won Pennsylvania and campaigned harder in Michigan.

“We never would have lost Pennsylvania, and all my relatives — the Finnegan family — who voted for Donald Trump because they felt slighted by Hillary and her campaign,” Biden, senior adviser at the Berman Law Group, told the Florida newspaper.

Navy fires head of Michigan recruiting district

The head of Navy recruiting in Michigan was fired Tuesday, officials said.

Cmdr. John W. House, 49, was relieved of command of Navy Recruiting District Michigan “due to loss of confidence,” Navy Recruiting Command spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Jessica McNulty said in an email to Navy Times.

“The Navy Recruiting Command Office of the Inspector General investigated allegations relating to Cmdr. House and appropriate accountability actions will be taken,” McNulty added.

Few other details regarding House’s firing were available Wednesday and he did not return messages from Navy Times seeking comment.

The recruiting district’s executive officer, Cmdr. David Pavlik, has taken the helm of the Michigan command.

Thousands of Suspected Terrorists Try to Enter America Each Year

WASHINGTON—Every day, an average of 10 known or suspected terrorists are prevented from entering the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These are individuals flagged on a U.S. terror watch list; most are encountered at airports or even while still overseas as they apply for a visa.

On top of that, 3,000 “special-interest” aliens were apprehended at the southwest border last year, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said on Jan. 4.

Special-interest aliens (SIAs) are labeled as such for their travel patterns and behavior. They hail from dozens of countries in the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa, where terrorist groups operate.

“This does not mean that all SIAs are ‘terrorists,’ but rather that the travel and behavior of such individuals indicates a possible nexus to nefarious activity (including terrorism) and, at a minimum, provides indicators that necessitate heightened screening and further investigation,” DHS said in a statement on Jan. 7.

When Larry Antonsen decided to report a priest who sexually abused him during high school, he believed the Archdiocese of Chicago was the right place to go.

Mr. Antonsen and his wife were lifelong churchgoers who sent their children to Sunday school and counted themselves as members of a parish in the archdiocese. The priest Mr. Antonsen was accusing had spent 14 years working at Chicago-area Catholic high schools.

But Mr. Antonsen, who is now 72, said reporting the allegations dropped him into a maze of church bureaucracy, in which his accusations were passed from one office to another before being quietly set aside.

The State Department is planning to spend $18,000 on an LGBT film festival in Mumbai to "promote gender inclusiveness."

The department is seeking a nonprofit group to facilitate the "LGBT Pride Month Film Festival" in June 2019, according to a grant announcement released on the final day before the partial government shutdown.

"The three-day program in Mumbai would center around the screenings to the general public of seven to ten American films that outline the legal and social aspects of the struggle for gay rights in the United States or that illustrate how the perceptions of gay people by Hollywood and the general public have changed over time, in particular how gay characters are portrayed in film," the grant announcement states.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel tells staff he’s being suspended over Parkland response

It appears that Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel is preparing to pack it in, for now.

The two-term sheriff, the object of fierce criticism over BSO’s handling of the Parkland massacre, told his top commanders that he will be removed from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis, sources told the Miami Herald.

DeSantis, who was sworn in Tuesday morning, had not made a formal announcement of a possible suspension. Israel’s discussions with staff about his ouster were first reported by Miami New Times.

Stuart N. Kaplan, one of Israel’s lawyers, said Israel was working at his office at the public safety building in Fort Lauderdale.
