That's the problem, I am conflicted between the thought that without support from within the system it would be almost hopeless…

 

And thought that we might have to do something ourselves because indeed, looking for someone else to save you sounds wrong…

Chinese Money Flees Silicon Valley As Trump Clamps Down On Access To US Tech

 

Thanks to new policies from the Trump administration aimed at cracking down at Beijing's access to strategic US technologies, China has all but halted investments in US-based tech startups, according to Reuters.

 

Venture funding out of China peaked last year at a record $3 billion according to the Rhodium Group, a New York economic research firm. The spike in capital is thought to have been spurred by investors and tech companies rushing to complete deals before the new regulatory measures were approved in August.

 

Following the new policies which have expanded the government's ability to block foreign investment in US companies, Chinese venture funding has all but collapsed according to Reuters, which interviewed over 35 industry players.

 

The new rules are still being finalized, but tech industry veterans said the fallout has been swift.

 

“Deals involving Chinese companies and Chinese buyers and Chinese investors have virtually stopped,” said attorney Nell O’Donnell, who has represented U.S. tech companies in transactions with foreign buyers.

 

Lawyers who spoke to Reuters say they are feverishly rewriting deal terms to help ensure investments get the stamp of approval from Washington. Chinese investors, including big family offices, have walked away from transactions and stopped taking meetings with U.S. startups. Some entrepreneurs, meanwhile, are eschewing Chinese money, fearful of lengthy government reviews that could sap their resources and momentum in an arena where speed to market is critical. -Reuters

 

US startups have also become cautious according to the report. San Francisco-based AI-powered training manual company Volley Labs, for example, declined offers from Chinese investors last year after initially accepting money from Beijing-based TAL Education Group amid a 2017 financing round.

 

"We decided for optical reasons it just wouldn’t make sense to expose ourselves further to investors coming from a country where there is now so much by way of trade tensions and IP tensions," said Volley CEO Carson Kahn.

 

Meanwhile a Silicon Valley VC told Reuters that he is aware of at least ten deals - some of which he is exposed to, which fell apart since they would require approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) - the regulatory body which rubber-stamped the controversial Uranium One deal.

 

CFIUS is the government group tasked with reviewing foreign investment for potential national security and competitive risks. The new legislation expands its powers. Among them: the ability to probe transactions previously excluded from its purview, including attempts by foreigners to purchase minority stakes in U.S. startups. -Reuters

 

China has been an aggressive investor in technology considered critical to US global competitiveness and military capabilities. Chinese investors have also been heavy investors in ride-hailing forms Uber and Lyft, along with companies that have more sensitive tech such as data center networking firm Barefoot Networks, speech recognition startup AISense and self-driving vehicle startup Zoox.

 

The withdrawal of Chinese money from Silicon Valley is unlikely to make a dent in the ability of startups to raise capital, as investors worldwide allocated some $84 billion into US startups during the first three quarters of 2017 - exceeding any prior full-year funding, according to data provider PitchBook.

 

That said, Chinese funding is also a pathway for US tech companies to gain access to the world's second-largest economy, which will deprive startups of much needed revenue.

 

"Those of us who are operators and entrepreneurs feel the brunt of these tensions," said Kahn.

 

The decline in Chinese investment comes amid heightened tensions between Beijing and Washington. Trump has blasted China for its enormous trade surplus and for what he claims are its underhanded strategies to obtain leading-edge American technology.

Navy fires head of Michigan recruiting district

 

The head of Navy recruiting in Michigan was fired Tuesday, officials said.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Demands Israel To Return Golan Heights To Syria During Joint Press Conference With US Secretary Of State

 

On January 8th, Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi described the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory and demanded that Israel withdraw its forces from the area.

 

Safadi’s comments came during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who landed in Amman earlier in the day.

 

“The Golan Heights are occupied Syrian territory. International law is clear on that. It has to be treated as such,” Safadi told reporters.

 

“Therefore, our position is that Israel needs to withdraw from that territory in the framework of a peace agreement,” he added.

 

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Middle East war. It unilaterally annexed the area in 1981, in a move that wasn’t recognized internationally.

 

The UN Security Council has maintained the illegality of measures taken by Israel “to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan,” adding that “acquisition of territory by force is inadmissible under international law.”

 

During the press conference Pompeo essentially spoke about Iran and that the US would “redouble” its diplomatic and commercial efforts to counter Tehran’s “malign influence” in the region.

 

Two days before the press conference, White House National Security Adviser John Bolton met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

 

During the meeting, Bolton guaranteed the US commitment to Israel’s security in the midst of the withdrawal from Syria.

 

Netanyahu on his part said that the time has come for US to recognize the annexation of the Golan Heights. “The Golan Heights is tremendously important for our security,” he said.

 

The Israeli PM said that he hoped to helicopter to the strategic plateau on January 7th with Bolton so that “you will be able to understand perfectly why we will never leave the Golan Heights, and why it is important that all countries recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.”

 

Earlier, in December 2018, Bolton said that the US had no plans of recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

 

In September 2018, US ambassador to Israel David Friedman said that he expected the Golan Heights to remain under Israeli control “forever,” and mentioned the possibility of US official recognition of the Golan as Israeli territory.

 

In October 2018, Jordan announced its decision to not extend a 25-year deal that allowed Israel to use two tracts of territory along its border, as Netanyahu said Israel was planning to negotiate an extension.

 

“These are Jordanian lands and they will remain,” King Abdullah II said. In an “era of regional turmoil” his kingdom -sandwiched between Syria to the north, Iraq to the east and Israel to its west – Jordan wanted to protect its “national interests.”

 

Jordan is one of two Arab countries, the other being Egypt, that have signed a peace treaty with Israel. Despite it, MPs in Jordan have repeatedly called for an end of the agreement. Jordan officials are quite pro-Palestinian, so anti-Israeli sentiments are not surprising.

Tijuana: 18 Murdered in 18 Hours=

 

The cartel-related drug violence in Tijuana continues to rage into 2019 with 18 killed in as many hours this past Monday and Tuesday, leaving at least 68 dead in the new year.

 

The figures were provided by the state attorney general’s office, according to local reports. A total of eight victims were also found wounded during the time period.

 

Tijuana set a new record for homicides in a single year in 2018 with 2,508 thanks to an alarming number of cartel-related murders–most tied to the street-level distribution of drugs. This violence continues despite numerous measures taken by Mexico City to intervene, including military surges and use of additional federal and state police personnel.

 

The 18-hour span began on Monday morning at 6:54 am in colonia Hacienda Santa María, where a male murder victim was left in the roadway under a blue tarp. On Sunday, law enforcement and officials held a double funeral for two municipal police officers who were gunned down Thursday while eating at a Chinese restaurant in colonia Sánchez Taboada, which is known as one of the most violent sections of Tijuana. There is a high concentration of street-level dealers moving methamphetamine for the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) in the area. Officer Fidencio Figueroa Rodríguez died in hospital the night he was shot, and the wounded officer, Omar Araujo, died of his wounds Saturday. A key cartel operative wanted by authorities for his alleged role in a conspiracy to traffic huge quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and marijuana to various cities in the United States was gunned down with his wife in Tijuana Saturday. The fugitive was a member of the CJNG and supposedly involved in the murder of the two Tijuana police officers.

US House Passes Bill to Reopen Treasury, Federal Tax Agency Amid Shutdown

 

The US House of Representatives passed and sent to the Senate a bill to reopen the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department amid a partial government shutdown that has been ongoing since December 22 due to disputes over the funding of a border wall.

 

The House voted 240-188 to pass the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act on Wednesday. Only 8 Republicans voted in favour of the legislation.

 

Earlier on Wednesday, the Trump administration said it would veto each spending bill the House passes because they fail to address the border security needs the administration is requesting. Senate Republican leaders have backed Trump, so are likely to reject the House bill.

 

US President Donald Trump is requesting $5.7 billion for the construction of a wall on the US border with Mexico. Democrats, who control the US House, have vowed to block any bill that includes the amount of money Trump is requesting to construct the border wall.

 

On December 22, the US government shut down after Democrats refused to include the funding Trump had requested.

Five Mexican Nationals Sent to Prison for International Sex Trafficking Ring

 

Five Mexican nationals, members of a notorious international criminal enterprise that forced young women and underage girls from Mexico and Central America into prostitution in the United States, received stiff prison sentences.

 

In 2017, a total of eight defendants, all members of the family-based Rendon-Reyes Trafficking Operation, pleaded guilty to racketeering, sex trafficking, and other federal charges following their arrests in Mexico. For more than a decade, the Rendon-Reyes Trafficking Operation, based in Tenancingo, Tlaxcala, Mexico, smuggled young women and girls from Mexico and Central America into the United States, forcing them into a life of prostitution, and sexual servitude, according to information provided by the U.S. Department of Justice.

 

Last week, U.S. District Judge Edward R. Korman sentenced five of the Mexican nationals in federal district court in Brooklyn, New York. Jovan “Jovani” Rendon-Reyes, 32, received 20 years in prison. Saul “Satanico” Rendon-Reyes, 41, got 15 years. Felix Rojas, 48, was handed a 25 year sentence. Odilon Martinez-Rojas, 47, and Severiano Martinez-Rojas, 53, each received more than 24 years in prison. Severiano Martinez-Rojas was also sentenced in related case in the Northern District of Georgia, according to the DOJ. Two years ago, Breitbart News reported Jovan Rendon-Reyes, Saul Rendon-Reyes, Felix Rojas, Odilon Martinez-Rojas and Severiano Martinez-Rojas pled guilty to “substantive offenses of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion.”

 

In a prepared statement, Acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said, “These well-deserved sentences reflect the gravity of the human trafficking crimes these defendants committed.” Whitaker added, “The defendants operated an extensive sex trafficking enterprise that preyed on vulnerable young women and girls, deceiving them with false promises, coercing their compliance, and compelling them into submission through beatings, threats, isolation, and intimidation.”

 

According to the press release, court documents filed between December 2004 and November 2015 revealed traffickers targeted vulnerable young women, some as young as 14 years old, from impoverished areas of Mexico and Central America. Rendon-Reyes male members often used false promises of love and marriage to lure their victims into sexual slavery where they forced victims to perform as many as 45 sex acts a night and took all of the prostitution proceeds, funneling the money back to Mexico. “These individuals will now face the consequences of their callous criminal actions exploiting women and girls whom they forced into sex slavery for profit,” said Derek Benner, executive associate director of Homeland Security Investigations. “Investigating human trafficking remains a priority for HSI, whose primary focus is to rescue victims and release them from the grip of their captors.” U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Richard Donoghue called the crimes committed by Rendon-Reyes Trafficking Organization members “brutal and shocking.” He hoped these lengthy sentences would “give the victims in this case some sense of justice.”

 

Three more defendants who are also Mexican nationals will be sentenced on January 15, according to the press release. They are Jose “Gusano” Rendon-Garcia, 35; Guillermina Rendon-Reyes, 48; and Francisco “Pancho” Rendon-Reyes, 30. The court will determine what all those sentenced will pay in restitution.

 

Whitaker credited the successful prosecutions of the Rendon-Reyes crime syndicate to “strong partnerships” among the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, the New York Office of the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations and their Mexican law enforcement counterparts.

Pence: Nancy Pelosi a ‘No’ on Border Security Even if Trump Opens Government

 

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused Wednesday to negotiate border security, even if President Donald Trump reopens the government quickly, Vice President Mike Pence recounted following the meeting.

 

Pence detailed a moment during Wednesday’s White House shutdown meeting with Speaker Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. President Donald Trump asked Speaker Pelosi if she would negotiate border security and wall funding if he opened up the government quickly. “The Speaker of the House said ‘no,’” Pence recounted. He believed at that point the president “thought there was no longer any reason to be talking at this meeting.”

 

President Trump walked out of the meeting, announcing on Twitter, “Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time.”

 

Pence said talk with leaders continued afterward.

 

The vice president said the offer put in front of Democrats during Wednesday’s meeting included not only President Donald Trump’s priorities for securing the southern border and addressing the crisis there, but also the priorities of Democrats.

 

Pence pointed to the 60,000 individuals being apprehended coming across the border every month, two thirds of which are families and unaccompanied minors. “It’s not a situation that our Border Patrol system was ever designed to deal with,” he said calling for reforms and a wall.

 

The vice president said it should be distressing to tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of federal workers that Democrats’ only answer is “we will not negotiate.”

 

“The president said, if I open up the government now would you then negotiate border security and the Speaker said ‘no.’”

 

Pence directed Americans to call their Congress member and Senator on the issue of securing the southern border and dealing with the humanitarian crisis there.

 

“Congress should just do their job,” Pence said with marked emphasis.

 

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise and Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen also offered details of the meeting.

 

“I think the president was very calm in trying to continue to put different options on the table to solve this serious crisis at our border,” Scalise told reporters outside the White House. “Last night [the president] laid out some of the problems and challenges we’re facing as a country and how we can get a solution.”

 

“Today what he did was start to offer some more ideas,” Scalise recounted. He said their teams worked over the weekend, “but at some point the other side has to put a counter offer on the table. ‘No’ is not a valid answer if you’re serious about solving this problem.”

 

Experts tasked with securing the nation have put the cost of moving toward securing the border at $5.7 billion, a number Scalise referenced. He then rebuked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for jokingly offering just one dollar to address the problem of border security. He said her reaction and refusal to propose a counteroffer is not fair to those Americans missing a paycheck under the shutdown.

 

Scalise strongly stated that no one slammed a hand on the table as had been reported.

 

“On the behalf of the Department of Homeland Security I’m just thoroughly disappointed,” said Secretary Nielsen. “This is a crisis. It is a humanitarian crisis. It is a security crisis and the reality is that walls work.” She said everywhere they’ve put up walls it has worked to reduce illegal immigration by 90-95 percent.

 

“Do you want to stop the smuggling between ports of entry? You need a wall. Do you want to stop the human misery that’s pulled between the walls? You need a wall,” said Nielsen. “It’s not an or, it’s an and,” she said referring to the need and plan for securing the border both at ports of entry and between them.

The New York Police Department produced a detailed analysis in 1998 opposing plans by the city to locate its emergency command center at the World Trade Center, but the Giuliani administration overrode those objections. The command center later collapsed from damage in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

 

“Seven World Trade Center is a poor choice for the site of a crucial command center for the top leadership of the City of New York,” a panel of police experts, which was aided by the Secret Service, concluded in a confidential Police Department memorandum.

 

The memorandum, which has not been previously disclosed, cited a number of “significant points of vulnerability.” Those included: the building’s public access, the center’s location on the 23rd floor, a 1,200-gallon diesel fuel supply for its generator, a large garage and delivery bays, the building’s history as a terrorist target, and its placement above and adjacent to a Consolidated Edison substation that provided much of the power for Lower Manhattan.

 

Rudolph W. Giuliani, the mayor then, has acknowledged some police skepticism about the site, but he has described it as resulting from a jurisdictional dispute between police officials and his emergency management director, who had played a role in selecting the site.

 

The eight-page memo reveals that police officials asked a variety of in-house experts in various disciplines and an outside expert to prepare a detailed analysis of the site’s vulnerabilities.

The decision to put the command center in the trade center has been a continuing source of discomfort for Mr. Giuliani, whose expertise and preparedness as a leader in a time of crisis has been the chief element in his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

 

The site was completed in the summer of 1999 and was destroyed when the 47-story building at 7 World Trade Center collapsed on Sept. 11 after a fire there burned for much of the day.

 

“This group’s finding is that the security of the proposed O.E.M. Command Center cannot be reasonably guaranteed,” the commander of the intelligence division, Daniel J. Oates, wrote in the July 15, 1998, memo to the police commissioner.

 

The memo said the conclusions were based on analysis by police officials with expertise in infrastructure, building security, explosives, traffic and ventilation systems, who also consulted the Secret Service, including the agency’s New York special agent in charge, Chip Smith.

 

“Mr. Smith agrees with this assessment,” the memo says in its concluding paragraph, “even though his own office is in Seven World Trade Center. He acknowledges that the security of his office is a continuing concern because of the public nature of the building and the other reasons specified in this report.”

 

The memorandum was provided to The New York Times by a law enforcement official not affiliated with a rival political campaign.

 

Mr. Giuliani received a briefing on the Police Department’s recommendations, but it is unclear whether he received a copy of the memorandum.

 

Mr. Giuliani has said in the past that one of the reasons for choosing the location was that several federal agencies with which city officials needed to be in contact during emergencies, including the Secret Service, had their offices there. Other federal agencies in the building included the Defense Department and the C.I.A.

The state of California is putting innocent people’s DNA in a national database for law enforcement. Specifically, two groups allege California collects DNA from people arrested but never convicted of crimes.

In fact, California is seizing, analyzing, and retaining DNA from all people suspected of felonies. In particular, police are uploading the DNA analyses of all suspects into CODIS.

 

Innocent people’s DNA is being kept on file because police upload wrongly arrested suspects’ DNA. For instance, DNA from any person that police question or detain in a case could be in CODIS. Notably, the DNA will still be on file if police release the person without charges.

 

Furthermore, the state retains all suspects’ DNA unless the suspect asks for the state to expunge it from CODIS. Few people go through this process because it is costly and requires a lot of paperwork.
