Democrat Presidential Contender Tulsi Gabbard Under Fire for Past Traditional Marriage Support

Democratic presidential contender Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is under fire for her past activism and statements in favor of traditional marriage and against “homosexual activists.”

Gabbard, described by CNN as “the first Hindu and American Samoan” elected to Congress, made a surprise announcement Friday that she would be running for president in 2020.

She is a left-wing Democrat and Iraq War veteran with a history of iconoclastic stances. In 2016, she resigned from a leadership position on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to support Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), for president, and was one of the first to raise the alarm about then-chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s effort to tilt the Democratic Party presidential primary in favor of establishment favorite Hillary Clinton.

Just last week, Gabbard blasted Democrats in the Senate — including a fellow Hawaiian and fellow “progressives” — for questioning a judicial nominee’s Catholic faith, including his membership in the Knights of Columbus.

Though she did not mention Sens. Marie Hirono (D-HI) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) by name, she accused them in an op-ed in The Hill of “fomenting religious bigotry.”

Now, however, Gabbard is facing similar accusations after a CNN report by researched Andrew Kaczynski that detailed her family’s past support for traditional marriage.

On Twitter, Kaczynski opined that Gabbard’s anti-gay views were “next level.”

Tulsi Gabbard herself is quoted in a 2000 press release from The Alliance for Traditional Marriage. In it, she attacks gay rights activists who were opposed to her mother Carol’s bid for the state’s board of education.

Tulsi Gabbard’s anti-gay efforts continued after she became a state representative.

Shortly after Gabbard announced her presidential ambitions Friday, her testimony at a hearing opposing a civil unions bill in 2004 resurfaced.

“To try to act as if there is a difference between ‘civil unions’ and same-sex marriage is dishonest, cowardly and extremely disrespectful to the people of Hawaii,” Gabbard said at the time. “As Democrats we should be representing the views of the people, not a small number of homosexual extremists.”

Powell May Not Know It Yet, But The Fed Is Now Trapped

With even Morgan Stanley openly discussing whether the Fed will "make the market happy", it now appears that the Fed tightening is effectively over with the Fed Funds rate barely above 2%, and the only question is whether the Fed will cut rates in 2019 or 2020 - roughly around the time the next recession is expected to strike - and whether the balance sheet shrinkage will stop at the same time (and be followed by more QE).

To be sure this new consensus was reflected in both equity and credit markets, both of which cheered the Fed's recent dovish U-Turn, and recouped all their losses since mid-December. And yet, market paradoxes quickly emerged: for one, rates markets yawned. On December 31, rates were pricing no Fed hikes over the next two years. Today, after the Fed’s big ‘change of tone’, expectations are almost exactly the same.

Second, a material disconnect has emerged between front-end pricing (no hikes) and the level of 10-year real rates (near seven-year highs). If, as Morgan Stanley's Andrew Sheets notes, "one of these is right, the other seems hard to justify."

Then there is, of course, the lament about the neutral rate being so low - and the potential output of the US economy so weak - that it can't sustain nominal rates above 2.25% - incidentally we explained back in 2015 the very simple reason why r-star, or the real neutral rate, is stuck at such a low level and is only set to drift even lower: record amounts of debt are depressing economic output, as the following sensitivity analysis showed.

Israeli Army Concludes Operation Northern Shield

The Israeli military has concluded Operation Northern Shield along Lebanon’s border with the discover of what it claimed to be the last attack tunnel of Hezbollah.

According to the army’s spokesman unit, the tunnel was dug from the Lebanese village of Ramyeh into Israel. Israeli engineer units will neutralize the newly-discovered tunnel soon. This is usually done by filling the tunnel with concrete or simply by detonating it.

“We have now exposed all attack tunnels dug by Hezbollah from Lebanon into Israel,” the Israeli military stated on its official Twitter account.

On December 3, the Israeli military launched Operation Northern Shield with the aim of discovering and neutralizing Hezbollah’s attack tunnels. Only six tunnels, including the one reported today, were discovered during the course of the operation.

Avichay Adraee, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said that the army will continue its “wide defensive operations” along the border of Lebanon despite discovering neutralizing all Hezbollah tunnels.

“The Israeli Defense Forces and the technological laboratory will continue to work to uncover the tunnels along the border with Lebanon permanently,” Adaree added.

The operation was seen by many observers as a part of ongoing Israeli effort to step up the pressure on Hezbollah and its backers, Iran and Syria.
