The only reason I can think of that they used Russia against Trump is that they were all neck deep themselves with bribery from Russia and it be a good way to make it easy to discredit any Russian allegations coming back at them. Involving Trump also obfuscates the whole mess to a such degree that most people would give up trying to figure it out when accusations from all sides started flying. He said - she said - they said type of thing. You end up thinking they're all lying.
