Malta’s crypto asset plan means greater money laundering risks, IMF warns

Malta’s drive to become a crypto asset hub will increase the chances its financial system is used for money-laundering, an International Monetary Fund mission warned.

The IMF mission also warned that Malta’s financial authorities need to make rapid progress with planned anti-money laundering reforms. The Maltese government pledged to make the reforms in 2018 after local authorities’ handling of money-laundering sparked a formal inquiry by the European Banking Authority (EBA).

Some children do volunteer to join the armed forces, but tens of thousands of children are forced to join up, sometimes at gunpoint. In Angola, forced recruitment of youth ("Rusgas") continues in some of the suburbs around the capital and throughout the country, especially in rural areas. Some reports suggest that military commanders have paid police officers to find new recruits. In Uganda, street children have been forced to join the army in order to be sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Update: Hezbollah claims Lebanese Army arrests US national under suspicion of illegal entry from Israel

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 P.M.) – Hezbollah’s official media wing said on Thursday that the Lebanese Army arrested a U.S. national inside the city of Soor (var. Tyre) for suspicion of illegal entry from Israel.

Hezbollah’s military wing claimed a man identified as Colin Emery was arrested in Soor after he bypassed the border fences and entered Lebanon illegally.

He was allegedly apprehended while trying to purchase clothing at an unnamed store in Soor.

No further details have been released.

Axon Partners With a Public Hospital to Re-brand Stun Guns as Lifesaving Devices

Last month, an article in the Star Tribune revealed a disturbing partnership between Axon Enterprise Inc. (Taser) and a public hospital.

For 14 years Axon has been paying the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) more than $1.1 million to help convince juries and the public that Tasers are lifesaving devices. Axon has been paying two doctors between $20,000- $36,000 a year to write hundreds of Axon-funded stories and serve as Axon medical advisors.

Two researchers in leadership positions at HCMC have served as medical advisers for Axon, and the hospital’s research arm conducted 22 Axon-funded studies, hospital records show. For at least eight years, Axon paid the hospital’s chief medical officer, Dr. William Heegaard, $20,000 annually to serve on the company’s medical advisory board until he resigned this year. Heegaard has disclosed in studies that he also has owned Axon stock.

Dr. Jeffrey Ho, medical director for EMS at HCMC, doubles as Axon’s contract medical director for at least 32 hours per month. Every three months, the hospital bills Axon $34,344 to cover Ho’s shifts while he’s working for the company, records show. Ho bills the company directly for outside work, which amounted to $36,000 last year, according to Hennepin Healthcare spokesman Tom Hayes.
