The Duke of Edinburgh has been involved in a car crash, Buckingham Palace has said.

Prince Philip, 97, was not injured in the accident, which happened close to the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk on Thursday.

Buckingham Palace said the crash involved another vehicle and police attended the scene.

The duke was driving a Range Rover and was pulling out of a driveway onto the A149 when the accident happened.

According to eyewitnesses, the car that the duke was driving overturned.

The eyewitnesses said they helped the duke out of the vehicle. He was conscious but very shocked and shaken, royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said.

US House Approves Resolution to Block US Sanctions Relief for Russian Companies

The US House of Representatives on Thursday endorsed a resolution to block the Treasury Department from moving forward with its plans to ease sanctions on three Russian companies, EN+, Rusal and Eurosibenergo.

The House voted 362 to 53 in favour of the resolution which disapproves of a Trump administration decision to lift sanctions on three Russian companies after they agreed to sweeping restructuring to reduce the control of Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska.

The move comes just hours after the US Department of the Treasury reportedly extended the expiration date of certain general licenses related to Russian companies En+, Rusal, EuroSibEnergo from January 21 to January 28. The move followed the US Senate's failure to secure enough votes to bar the Treasury from lifting sanctions on the three companies.

The Treasury first imposed the sanctions on April 6, and the move against Rusal, the world's second largest producer of aluminium, swiftly created turmoil in global aluminium markets. As a result, the United States' European allies urged the Treasury to reverse its course on the sanctions.

Although the three firms have agreed to take steps to reduce Deripaska's holdings to under 50 percent, Democrats in the US Congress have sought to oppose the Treasury's rollback.

The Senate on Wednesday attempted to pass a resolution blocking the move, but fell short of the required number of votes.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi renewed her call Thursday to delay the State of the Union address, saying the date is not “sacred” and President Trump should wait to deliver his message to the nation until the partial government shutdown ends.

The president, for his part, fired back minutes later during a missile-defense speech at the Pentagon as he alleged the Democrats have been "hijacked" by the fringe and Pelosi is holding up talks.

Lebanese Intelligence Detain US Suspect Of Infiltrating From Israel

The Lebanese military intelligence have arrested a U.S. citizen who is suspected of entering Lebanon from Israel through a hole in the separation fence.

“After continuous search operations an army intelligence patrol was able to find the American citizen ‘Colin Emery’ hiding in one of the alleys in the city of Tyre … He was arrested over suspicions of entering on 15/01/2019 from the Occupied Palestinian Territories [Israel] to Lebanon territory,” the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) said in an official statement on January 17.

Last week, the Israeli media reported that a man wearing an Israeli military uniform and holding a box full of Hebrew documents entered the southern Lebanese village of Ayta ash Shab through a hole in the separation line. Tyre, where Emery was found, is located some 20 kilometers from Aita al-Shaab.

Lebanese sources said that Emery was arrested while he was trying to buy clothes from a shop in Tyre. Apparently, the man’s trousers were shredded while he was crossing the barbed wire on the separation line.

While some Lebanese activists believe that Emery was engaged in some sort of sabotage operations of Israeli or American intelligence, others believe that the man was simply looking for an adventure. The LAF will likely reveal more details on this incident in the upcoming few days.

Israeli security forces killed 290 Palestinians in 2018, the majority of whom did not “take part in hostilities,” B’tselem, an Israeli human rights group, said Thursday.

In a brief report, the group said that Israeli troops killed 254 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, including two women and 47 minors; 34 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem; and two in Israel.

In the coastal enclave, it said 149 of those killed did not “take part in hostilities,” while 90 did. The report added that B’tselem was unable to determine whether the remaining 15 of those killed in Gaza “took part in hostilities or not.”

An IDF spokesman did not respond to a request for comment about B’tselem’s findings.

Israeli security officials maintain that they only employ force when absolutely necessary and take exhaustive precautions and pains to prevent Palestinian civilian deaths. At times, however, they have admitted to making mistakes, resulting in Palestinian civilian deaths.

Security officials also maintain that terrorist groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad use Palestinian civilians as human shields to protect themselves and their military assets.

B’tselem said it collected the data on the Palestinians killed by troops last year through eyewitness accounts, official documents and photographs and video footage. It also said it cross-checked its information with the reports and statements of Palestinian and international human rights groups, the IDF, Palestinians terrorist groups and media reports.

Child Sex Offender Nabbed Crossing The Border With Migrant Caravan Families

Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents were able to apprehend a previously deported child sex offender who tried re-entering the country with a group of other foreign nationals.

A CBP camera operator on Jan. 11 discovered 24 individuals illegally crossing into the United States near the San Luis, Arizona, Port of Entry. The caravan, which was made up mostly of Central American family units, immediately surrendered when confronted by agents.

Among the group was Marcos Velasquez-Taperio, a 37-year-old Guatemalan national who was convicted of aggravated indecent liberties with a minor in Ford County, Kansas, in 2009. After serving 32 months in prison, Velasquez-Taperio was deported to his home country. Government investigators has said that thousands more migrant children may have been separated from their families than the Trump administration has acknowledged.

A report from the Health and Human Services inspector general’s office found that family separations were occurring before the spring of last year, when the administration announced its “zero tolerance” policy on the southwest border.

“The total number and current status of all children separated from their parents or guardians … is unknown,” according to the report. It could be thousands more because family separations were taking place much earlier, during an influx that began in 2017, investigators found.

The administration has identified a little more than 2700 children who were separated from their families. That figure was released as part of a court case in which a federal judge ordered the families reunited.

Despite “considerable” effort by the department to locate all the children who were placed in its care after immigration authorities separated them from their families, officials were still finding new cases as long as five months after the judge’s order requiring reunifications, the report said.

Investigators raised concerns about the children who have not been identified because they were not covered by Judge Dana Sabraw’s reunification order.

That directive did not apply to “an estimated thousands of children whom (immigration authorities) separated during an influx that began in 2017,” the report said.

Most of those children would have already been placed with sponsors before the court case.

“There is even less visibility for separated children who fall outside the court case,” investigators concluded.

Moreover, inaccurate and incomplete information in government files may be hampering efforts to identify more recent cases of family separations.

US President Donald Trump rescinded the family separation policy last summer after an outcry. In some cases, toddlers had been separated from their parents and placed into HHS custody.

“Zero tolerance” for border crossers, under which everyone who enters the US illegally faces potential criminal charges, triggered the family separations. Children cannot be kept indefinitely with parents or relatives under federal detention.

The watchdog’s report found ongoing problems keeping track of children, which could affect their wellbeing.

It said “it is not yet clear whether (HHS’s) recent changes are sufficient to ensure consistent and accurate data about separated children, and the lack of detail in information received from (immigration authorities) continues to pose challenges.”

The border continues to be a crucible for the Trump administration, with a partial government shutdown that has dragged on nearly a month over the president’s demand for $US5.7 billion ($A8 billion) for a border wall that congressional Democrats are unwilling to provide.

Mechanical Issues Cause Back-to-Back F-15 Emergency Landings in Kadena

Two F-15 Eagles from Kadena Air Base, Japan, experienced mechanical issues and were forced to make emergency landing using arresting cables, the Air Force told Military.com Wednesday.

One of the F-15s had a problem with its landing gear and the other "experienced a hydraulic issue," said Air Force Capt. Victoria Hight, spokeswoman for Pacific Air Forces.

The jets were returning to Kadena when the incident occurred Tuesday, Hight said in an email.

"Both pilots followed proper procedures and landed the aircraft safely without incident," she said.

Various media outlets noted that the jets landed on the same runway, but in the opposite direction of one another. The news was first reported by the Okinawa Times.

The separate incidents have not forced the base to order a stand-down of its fleet, Hight added. The base flies F-15C/D models.

"Our airmen are well-trained to execute their missions under any conditions, and they handled this particular incident in a professional, safe manner," the spokeswoman said.

In July, the base paused all F-15 flying operations after a pilot crashed off Okinawa during a routine training flight.

The lone pilot "successfully ejected" and was rescued by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

Coca-Cola continues to go after new diet soda drinkers with the launch of two new flavors of Diet Coke — Strawberry Guava and Blueberry Acai.

They’re the first additions to the soda giant’s line of new flavors, which launched last January to attract millennials.

Like the inaugural flavors, these two will also come in 12-ounce, skinny cans.

The pair will hit store shelves across the U.S. next week and will be available as single cans or in eight-packs, Coca-Cola said Wednesday. The suggested retail prices are 99 cents and $3.99, respectively.

In January 2018, the classic zero-calorie soda morphed into Ginger Lime, Feisty Cherry, Zesty Blood Orange and Twisted Mango. The original flavor remains, too.

"Different consumers have different favorites, so it’s important to offer a range."

Coca-Cola found that when new drinkers try one of the flavors, they’re also more likely to reach for original Diet Coke, which first launched in 1982.

Final Steps in Syria’s Successful Struggle for Peace and Sovereignty

The war of aggression against Syria is winding up, and this can be observed by the opening of a series of new embassies in Damascus.

The situation in Syria evolves daily and sees two situations very closely linked to each other, with the US withdrawal from Syria and the consequent expansionist ambitions of Erdogan in Syria and the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) takeover in Idlib that frees the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Russian aviation to liberate the de-escalation zone.

Trump has promised to destroy Turkey economically if he attacks the Kurds, reinforcing his claim that Erdogan will not target the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) once the US withdraws from the area. One of the strongest accusations made against Trump’s withdrawal by his opponents is that no Middle Eastern force will ever trust the US again if they abandon the SDF to its fate, that is, to its annihilation at the hands of the Turkish army and its FSA proxies. This, however, is not possible; not so much because of Trump’s economic threats, but because of Damascus and Moscow being strongly opposed to any Turkish military action in the northeast of Syria.

This is a red line drawn by Putin and Assad, and the Turkish president likely understands the consequences of any wrong moves. It is no coincidence that he stated several times that he had no problems with the “Syrians or Syrian-Kurdish brothers”, and repeated that if the area under the SDF were to come under the control of Damascus, Turkey would have no need to intervene in Syria. Trump’s request that Ankara have a buffer zone of 20 kilometers separating the Kurdish and Turkish forces seems to complement the desire of Damascus and Moscow to avoid a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the SDF.

The only party that seems to be secretly encouraging a clash between the SDF and Turkish forces is Israel, criticizing Ankara and singing the praises of the SDF, in order to try and accentuate the tensions between the two sides, though naturally without success. Israel’s continued raids in Syria, though almost constantly failing due to Syrian air defense, and the divide-and-rule policy used against Turkey and the SDF, show that Tel Aviv is now weakened and mostly irrelevant in the Syrian conflict.

During the partial shutdown of the federal government, which began Dec. 22, 2018, the Judiciary has continued to operate by using court fee balances and other “no-year” funds. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts has revised its original estimate and now is working toward the goal of sustaining paid operations through Jan. 18, 2019.

In an effort to achieve this goal, courts have been asked to delay or defer non-mission critical expenses, such as new hires, non-case related travel, and certain contracts. Judiciary employees are reporting to work and currently are in full-pay status.

If existing funds run out and new appropriated funds do not become available, the Judiciary will operate under the terms of the Anti-Deficiency Act, which allows “essential work” to continue during a lapse in appropriations. This mission critical work includes activities to support the exercise of the courts’ constitutional powers under Article III, specifically the resolution of cases and related services. Each court would determine the staff necessary to support its mission critical work.

In response to requests by the Department of Justice, some federal courts have issued orders suspending, postponing, or holding in abeyance civil cases in which the government is a party for a limited period, subject to further consideration, or until appropriated funds become available. Such orders are published on court internet sites. Criminal cases are expected to proceed uninterrupted.

The Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) system remains in operation for electronic filing of documents.

Courts have been encouraged to work with their district’s U.S. Attorney, U.S. Marshal, and Federal Protective Service staff to discuss service levels required to maintain court operations. The General Services Administration has begun to reduce operations and courts are working with their local building managers to mitigate the impact on services.

US Islamic militant sought to attack White House, says FBI

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Authorities in the US state of Georgia have arrested a 21-year-old man who sought to buy explosives and an anti-tank rocket for a "jihad" suicide attack on the White House planned for Thursday (Jan 17).

Byung Pak, the US attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, announced the arrest of Hasher Taheb of Cumming, Georgia late on Wednesday after a months-long FBI investigation sparked by a tip from the local community "that Taheb had become radicalised."

According to the indictment, Taheb tried to recruit an informant and an undercover FBI agent into a plan to attack the White House and other targets in Washington, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and an unnamed synagogue.

Wanting to fulfil his "duty" to carry out an attack and expecting to become a "martyr," Taheb originally hoped to travel to Islamic State-held territory in the Middle East, he told the FBI source, according to the indictment.

But because he had lost his passport, Taheb told the informant it would be better to launch attacks inside the United States.

On Dec 7, 2018, he met the undercover agent and revealed a hand-drawn diagram of the White House West Wing, where the president's office is located.

In the subsequent weeks, Taheb detailed what weapons he wanted to acquire for the plot, and assigned the FBI agent to obtain them: semi-automatic weapons, grenades and an AT-4 shoulder-mounted anti-tank weapon.

His plan was for the trio to jointly launch the attack on what he referred to as "game day," eventually pinpointed as Jan 17.

"Specifically, he described his plan to use the AT-4 to blow a hole in the White House so that the group could enter," the indictment said.

Taheb advised the source "that jihad was the best deed in Islam and the peak of Islam," the indictment said.

On Wednesday, the three met in the parking lot of a store in Buford, Georgia where the FBI agent was to hand over the explosives and weapons, all of which had been rendered inert.

When Taheb took delivery of the weapons, he was arrested.

Officials and the indictment provided no background on Taheb or whether he had made any contact with Islamic militant groups abroad.

But Pak said no targets in Washington or Georgia were ever truly threatened by the plot.

In a separate case, on Thursday a 49-year-old man, Demetrius Nathaniel Pitts or Abdur Raheem Rafeeq, was arrested in a Cleveland, Ohio suburb and charged with planning a terror attack on the city on July 4, the US Independence Day holiday.

Undercover FBI agents communicated with Pitts for months on the plot before arresting him.

"Pitts, a US citizen living in Ohio, pledged his allegiance to Al-Qaeda," a Justice Department statement said.

FBI and DOJ officials were warned in 2016 that the infamous anti-Trump Steele dossier was likely biased, but they ignored the warning and used the document to obtain a FISA warrant to spy on a Trump campaign official.

Justice Department official Bruce Ohr briefed the then-deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe, a top DOJ official, and a lawyer for then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch about his concerns surrounding the objectivity of the Steele dossier, according to transcripts of a closed-door meeting between Ohr and congressional investigators, which were first published this week by the Epoch Times.

Two of the people Ohr warned about the document are now part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team investigating the Trump campaign’s alleged ties to Russia. One of them, Andrew Weissmann, is now Mueller's top deputy.

Judge orders Justice and State departments to reopen part of Hillary Clinton email inquiry

A U.S. judge ordered the Justice and State departments Thursday to reopen an inquiry into whether Hillary Clinton used a private email server while secretary of state to deliberately evade public records laws, and to answer whether the agencies acted in bad faith by not telling a court for months that they had asked in mid-2014 for missing emails to be returned.

The order risks reopening partisan wounds that have barely healed since Clinton's unsuccessful 2016 presidential bid, but in issuing the order Thursday, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth said the spirit of the Freedom of Information Act required it.

In a narrow but sharply worded 10-page opinion, Lamberth wrote that despite the government's claimed presumption of transparency, "faced with one of the gravest modern offenses to government openness, [the Obama administration's] State and Justice departments fell far short" of the law's requirements in a lawsuit for documents.

Lamberth added that despite President Donald Trump's repeated campaign attacks against Clinton for not making her emails public, "the current Justice Department made things worse," by taking the position that agencies are not obliged to search for records not in the government's possession when a FOIA request is made.

Lamberth wrote he took no pleasure in "questioning the intentions of the nation's most august" Cabinet departments, but said it was necessary when their response "smacks of outrageous misconduct."

Conservative legal watchdog group Judicial Watch filed its FOIA lawsuit in July 2014 seeking State Department talking points issued after the September 2012 attacks on U.S. facilities in Benghazi, Libya, that left the U.S. ambassador dead.

The suit came months before news broke in March 2015 that Clinton exclusively used a private email account as secretary from 2009 to 2013.

Between July 2014 and March 2015, the State Department said in court filings that its document searches were adequate and did not mention unsearched records as it, proposed to settle the case. The agencies later acknowledged that additional searches would be needed, without disclosing that it had received 30,000 emails returned by Clinton.

At best, Lamberth said the government's actions reflect "negligence born of incompetence," adding, "At worst, career employees in the State and Justice departments colluded to scuttle public scrutiny of Clinton, skirt FOIA, and hoodwink this court."

Lamberth said he had delayed ruling on the order until a similar 2016 case before another federal judge in the District had wound down.

Lamberth ordered the government's attorneys to meet with Judicial Watch and by Dec. 17 propose to answer additional questions into whether "Clinton used a private email to stymie FOIA, whether State's attempts to settle the case in 2014 and 2015 amounted to bad faith, and whether State's subsequent searches have been adequate."…

U.S. special envoy in Pakistan for talks on Afghan peace

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - U.S. special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad and the top NATO commander in Afghanistan met Pakistani officials on Thursday as they pursued diplomatic efforts to push forward talks with the Afghan Taliban.

Khalilzad, who has been leading efforts to broker an agreement with the Taliban, met the chief of the Pakistan army staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa along with Gen. Scott Miller, commander of the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, and Lisa Curtis, senior director for South and Central Asia at the U.S. National Security Council.

Afghanistan’s frequently hostile relations with Pakistan, which it has regularly accused of supporting the Taliban, have warmed somewhat as regional countries have joined the effort to push the insurgents to open talks with Kabul.

On Thursday, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and “expressed his gratitude for Pakistan’s sincere facilitation of these efforts”, according to a statement from the Pakistan government spokesman’s office.

The two leaders also issued invitations to visit their respective countries and agreed “to remain engaged and create an environment for resolving all outstanding issues”, it said.

Pakistani officials deny supporting the Taliban and say Islamabad is strongly in favor of a settlement that would maintain stability in Afghanistan and prevent a disastrous economic collapse of its neighbor.

Taliban officials said this week that Pakistan was putting pressure on its leaders to accept talks with the Afghan government, detaining a senior leader in the city of Peshawar before releasing him a few days later.

Taliban representatives have met Khalilzad on at least three occasions but have so far refused to talk directly to the internationally recognized Afghan government, which they consider an illegitimate regime put in place by foreign powers.

The date of Khalilzad’s next meeting with Taliban officials remains unclear after the insurgents threatened to stall the process over disagreements about plans to withdraw international forces from Afghanistan.
