Threats Against Covington Students Possibly Felonious, Prosecutor Says

People who threatened violence against the students of Covington Catholic High School may face up to five years in prison thanks to a Kentucky law that elevates threats against schools and students to felonies.

Commonly, violent threats are treated as misdemeanors in the state (pdf), where the private religious school is based.

But Kentucky law (pdf) has a special category of “terroristic threatening in the second degree” that pertains to threats of acts “likely to result in death or serious physical injury to any student group, teacher, volunteer worker, or employee of a public or private … school.”

The crime is deemed a Class D felony, which corresponds with a punishment ranging from one to five years in state prison, according to Kenton County Prosecutor Rob Sanders, who holds jurisdiction over Covington.

Such a threat “does not need to identify a specific person or … school in order for a violation of this section to occur,” the law states.

UK SAS Forces Banned From Wearing Skull Badges Due to SS Insignia Resemblance

Senior UK officials have ordered the country's Special Air Service (SAS) to stop wearing comic-book Punisher skull badges on their uniforms, arguing that they look like the Death's Head (Totenkopf) emblem worn by Hitler's SS, the Daily Star reports.

"The SAS are professional killers – that's the job. So what if they wear a skull on their uniform. We have been told that it could be upsetting to other units, disrespectful to enemy forces and could encourage war crimes by some of the foreign troops the SAS works with, such as Afghans and Iraqis," a military source was cited by the newspaper as saying.

Democrats Seek to Work Around the Electoral College

A proposal to overthrow the constitutionally mandated system for electing the president and vice president of the United States—known as the Electoral College—without going through the effort of amending the U.S. Constitution has three-fifths of the support its backers say it needs to become a reality.

According to a group called National Popular Vote (NPV), the proposal “would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.” Currently, 48 states give all their electoral votes to the candidate who prevails in the popular vote in that state. Nebraska and Maine use a different formula, awarding some of their electors by congressional district.

According to a tally maintained by NPV, enabling legislation has been adopted in 11 states plus the District of Columbia, representing a total of 172 electoral votes. Those states are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

The plan, NPV claims, would become effective when enacted by several more states with 98 more electoral votes.

A former refugee judge who once wrote that most refugees are liars was recently rehired by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) to decide asylum claims, Global News has learned.

Lubomyr Luciuk — who once said he “had no choice but to become ‘Dr. No’” because he denied so many refugee claims — gained notoriety for his views on Canada’s asylum system, including when he said Canada had become a haven for “assorted terrorists, drug peddlers and war criminals.”

The United States in Decline

Freedom House has tracked a slow overall decline in political rights and civil liberties in the United States for the past eight years, punctuated by an unusual three-point drop for developments in 2017. Prominent concerns have included Russian interference in US elections, domestic attempts to manipulate the electoral system, executive and legislative dysfunction, conflicts of interest and lack of transparency, and pressure on judicial independence and the rule of law.
