Julia Hart and Jack Reed
By KATHRYN SHATTUCKMAY 1, 2005
UNLIKE the wedding a week earlier of a certain heir to the British throne, the marriage on April 16 of Senator Jack Reed, the Rhode Island Democrat, and Julia Hart, was purposefully short on pomp and publicity.
There would be no splendiferous cathedral with an aisle the length of a football field, no luminaries in the crowd to outshine the wedding couple – only a small gathering of friends and family at the Catholic Chapel at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
There were bills to debate, protocol to be maintained – this couple really did have a country to help run, after all.
Ms. Hart, 39, is a coordinator in the Interparliamentary Services Office of the Senate, which organizes exchanges between that body and the legislatures of foreign nations. Mr. Reed, 55, sits on the Senate Armed Services and the Joint Economic Committees, among others.
A few days before the ceremony, Mr. Reed, a former Army Ranger, and Ms. Hart were asked to describe their first meeting in early 2002, when they traveled with a Congressional delegation to war-ravaged Afghanistan.
