Whatever this is, it's possible be done without medical skills and in a non-medical setting.

My initial hunch is that it's a ritual that draws an analogy to the story of Odin the One-Eyed (google him) and his sacrifice of an eye to gain supernatural wisdom and insight. I think it's simply a priestess socking them with a sap glove to symbolically/temporally take their vision in one eye.

Yes. But that only involves jabbing a spike in and wiggling it around. Implanting a chip and electrodes and training both subject and computer is something very different.
