White House Sees No Need to Balance Pro-Israel Bias on Peace Plan

Officials not interested in being an 'honest broker'

While the details of President Trump’s “deal of the century” peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians are still secret, officials offered some spoiler alerts, saying that the White House feels no need to try to offer a balanced plan, or do anything to show themselves to be honest brokers.

Instead, they say the administration wants to underscore that it is “proudly supportive of Israel,” and feels no need to balance the peace proposal with anything that the Palestinians might want, because they don’t see an “equivalency” between the two.

Which is, of course, not how deals end up being made. This is, rather, a continuation of the US policy toward the Israel-Palestine conflict for decades, initially talking up a fair deal but finally offering a plan that would rubber stamp Israeli policy, and offer the Palestinians effectively nothing in return.

When the plan is offered, the Palestinians can be expected to reject it, because it is admittedly going to be biased against them. Then administration officials can condemn the Palestinians for not taking part in the US-led process, and punish them further.

The irony of this is that, because an Israeli election is just around the corner, if the proposal is offered before the vote the far-right Israeli government will also spurn it, no matter how in favor of Israeli policy it is, because any deal would conceivably give the Palestinians something, even if it’s by accident, and that would open up other Israeli parties to attack the government as weak.

Qatar takes delivery of first French-built Rafale jet fighter

Qatar took delivery of the first of 36 Rafale multi-purpose fighter jets it ordered from French manufacturer Dassault.

The hand-over ceremony on Wednesday in Merignac, in southwestern France, where the planes are built, was attended by Qatar Defence Minister Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah and Dassault Aviation chief Eric Trappier.

Qatar ordered 24 of the fighters in 2015, adding 12 more last year. It also has an option to buy 36 more.

The twin-engine fighter has been in service with the French Air Force since 2004. France has also sold Mirage F1, Alpha Jets and Mirage 2000 fighters to Qatar.

After failing to sell the Rafale abroad for several years, France finally won a contract from Egypt in 2015 for 24 jets, followed by the sale to Qatar.

In September 2016, India also agreed to buy 36 of the fighters.

Qatar has upped its defence spending after being diplomatically isolated by its Gulf neighbours.

Since June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have imposed a boycott on Qatar, accusing it of backing terrorism and being too close to Iran.

Qatar denies the allegations and has accused the Saudi-led bloc of aiming to incite regime change in Doha.

Poroshenko can’t win presidential election without vote rigging, warns former president

Ukraine’s incumbent President Pyotr Poroshenko won’t be able to win the upcoming presidential election without electoral fraud, former President Viktor Yanukovich told a news conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

"Today, when the presidential election is round the corner, and then the parliamentary election will take place, we must say definitely that the regime will be doing everything at whatever the cost to engage all the available resources, including administrative, and different technologies that will help rig the election, as it will be impossible for President Poroshenko [to win] without electoral fraud," Yanukovich said.

Poroshenko’s chances are zero also because he is a businessman, not a statesman, he went on to say. "Gaining personal benefits and profit is his first priority and he would give anything for it," Yanukovich said.

According to him, it is typical of Poroshenko to tell lies. "Ever since I have known him, he lied not only to me, but to everyone, this is his professional habit," Yanukovich noted.

He went on to say that Poroshenko’s goal was to make personal gains at all costs. "He has been using his power and the opportunities he currently has for that purpose," the former president stressed.

"I don’t believe he will have any chances during the election, though he is very, very devious," he summed up.

The presidential election in Ukraine is scheduled for March 31. The front-runner of the latest opinion polls is entertainer Vladimir Zelensky, while the leader of the Batkivshchina party Yulia Timoshenko and Poroshenko share the second and third places. Poroshenko remains the only unregistered candidate, having submitted his documents at the very last moment - on February 3. The registration process will continue until February 8.

Israelis will go the polls on April 9th, in what I consider to be a good omen: It would be the 154th anniversary of Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, and we certainly could use any victory over racism. The results as predicted this early in the campaign, however, are anything but hopeful.

The latest polls show Labor, the old liberal-Zionist central-left party, losing approximately 75% of its seats, standing now at 6-8 seats, and a gentle push may drive it under the Blocking Line of four seats, which means the party will lose all seats. Things look bleak for Meretz, the only party on the Jewish left. Usually, Meretz would gain at Labor’s loss, particularly as Labor took a right-wing path under its current feckless leader, Avi Gabai; but now Meretz, too, is hovering near the Blocking Line. It has five seats at the moment, was expected to make a modest gain to seven seats, but now the polls indicate it will gain four. A slight opposing wind may do just that. There’s a real chance both Meretz and Labor won’t be present in the next Knesset.

(Full disclosure: I am a long-standing member of Meretz, voted for it since 1988, and was somewhat comically elected as a party center member from Petah Tikva – Petah Tikva elected no male center members, so I was jumped up in the list as a sort of affirmative action.)

What happened? Several things, but the trigger for the disappearance of the Zionist left parties is the arrival of Gen. Benny Gantz, the butcher of Gaza, at the head of a new party, Gantz, who published videos extolling the carnage he inflicted on Gaza in the 2014 massacre known as Protective Edge, is running under two slogans: “Israel before everything” and “neither left nor right.” He shot to over 20 seats in the polls, and is considered to be a better candidate for prime minister than Netanyahu (by a slim margin: 43-42).

And this is the crux of this election. Gantz seems (for now, at least) to have a real shot at dethroning Netanyahu. Ever since the elections of 2009, removing Netanyahu became a fetish of the center-left: everything was sacrificed to the removal of this boogieman. One feckless leader of Labor and the late, unlamented, Kadima after another promised they’d bring him down. Their main way of doing so was to turn more and more rightward. They stopped mentioning the occupation, since they believed this issue held no interest with the electorate – and, worse, marked them as “leftists.”

Being called a “leftist” has become a swear word for over a decade now. This scared Labor and the various, ever-shifting center parties. Labor tried, in 2013, to officially remove all traces to the occupation, and focus only on social issues. This failed badly.

Taliban & Afghan delegates seek end to 18yr war at Moscow peace talks boycotted by US-backed Kabul

Representatives of the Taliban met with other Afghan delegates in Moscow to discuss the prospects of peace and the removal of all foreign troops from Afghanistan. Among those present was the first US-backed president Hamid Karzai.

The Taliban were represented by Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, a former mujahideen fighter who has led the movement’s office in Qatar since 2012. Several members of the Afghan diaspora in Russia, as well as former government officials from Afghanistan, also attended. The government of President Ashraf Ghani is boycotting the talks, however, having rejected the Taliban’s key condition for peace: that all foreign troops have to leave Afghanistan.

MSNBC Reporter Thinks US Troops in Syria Are Fighting Assad, not Daesh (VIDEO)

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard got grilled about her opposition to US intervention in Syria. Trying to trip the lawmaker up, correspondent Kasie Hunt at one point suggested US troops were in Syria fighting against the Syrian Arab Army instead of Daesh.

t's always embarrassing when the subject of your interview shows you up on your own program. Hunt now knows what that feels like after Gabbard, the Democratic representative from Hawaii who recently announced a 2020 presidential bid, turned the tables on Hunt and a group of correspondents trying to poke holes in Gabbard's adamant opposition to US intervention in the Syrian civil war.

"What do you say to Democratic voters who watched you go over there, and what do you say to military members who have been deployed repeatedly in Syria pushing back against Assad?" Hunt asked Gabbard Wednesday. The question followed Gabbard's rejection of Hunt's idea that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is an enemy of the United States.

So, since when have US troops been "pushing back against Assad" in Syria? Last we checked, US troops were in eastern Syria in support of the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces fighting against Daesh, which is the mutual enemy of the US, the Kurds and Assad. When Trump announced US troops were being withdrawn, he justified it by saying Daesh has been defeated — and indeed it has, being restricted to only two small villages on the Euphrates River, near the Syrian border with Iraq.
