Don't believe this. I used to think the same thing. When my wife wanted to visit the the Field Museum a few years ago and my first thought was yeah lets go get shot. We never felt unsafe and we walked all over the place. Gets a bad rep from certain areas. It's not the best city in the US but far from the worst.
