>why AU?

No Reason.

Like most major universities, American University has programs where students can study abroad. They have Premier centers in Belgium, Spain and Kenya, with a large list of partners and programs (both for incoming and outgoing students) in every corner of the globe.

But American University also has international campuses of its own, in Beirut Lebanon, Dubai U.A.E, Paris France,

There is also an American University in Cairo Egypt. Internet info states that this is an independent University, and there is no mention on their website about any affiliation with other the branches of AU’s but it would seem otherwise.

John Brennan earned a BA in Political Science from Fordham University in 1977, including study at the American University of Cairo in 1975/1976.

Notably, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently delivered a scathing rebuke of the Obama administration's Mideast policies and addressed a wide range of regional topics a the the American University in Cairo in January. It’s really worth a read to understand what the current Administration is saying, directly and bluntly, to the Mideast world.

This post is mainly just to develop the idea that American University has a worldwide reach, a vast array of public figures both as students and as faculty, an international cross-section of faculty/students, and a very highly politicized environment. “University” doesn’t seem to be the right classification for it as an institution.
