AOC-Backing PAC Paid $300K to Company Founded by PAC’s Founder

A left-wing political action committee instrumental in the election of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) paid $300,000 to a company cofounded by one of the PAC's founders.

The Justice Democrats PAC—which was cofounded by Ocasio-Cortez's chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti, who also acted as her campaign chair—helped power her surprise victory over Joseph Crowley during the Democratic primary. Chakrabarti founded the group with former Sanders campaign adviser Zack Exley, YouTube host Cenk Uygar, and leftwing talk show host Kyle Kulinski.

Our Bankrupt Elite

Every element of the college admissions scandal, aka "Operation Varsity Blues," is fascinating.

There are the players: the Yale dad who, implicated in a securities fraud case, tipped the feds off to the caper; a shady high school counselor turned admissions consultant; the 36-year-old Harvard grad who sold his talents for standardized testing to the highest bidder; the comely actresses from Full House and Desperate Housewives; the fashion designer; the casino magnate. Who would have thought that one of the major headlines of 2019 would be "Lori Loughlin released on bond"?

Weapon suppliers of Bataclan-terrorists arrested in Amsterdam

Dutch police arrested two men in Amsterdam that were involved in the terror attacks in Paris in 2015. Two men of the age of 29 and 31 years old are under investigation because of weapons that were used by IS terrorists.

Members of a jihadist terror cell were visiting the Netherlands in 2015 to collect weapons such as Kalashnikovs and explosives. The suspects, the two arrested men, may be involved in the delivery of those arms, writes Algemeen Dagblad.

The police that formed an international team of Dutch, Belgian and French investigators, suspect that with these weapons, IS committed attacks in Paris. The attacks at the Stade de France, various cafes and in the Bataclan concert hall killed 129 and more than 350 were wounded.

One of the suspects was released om Thursday, because of health issues. This prevents him from being put in a cell. He is still considered a suspect. The other suspect is only allowed to have contact with his lawyer

GMO Cooking Oil Quietly Arrives In Restaurants

Flipping logic upside-down, the Technocrats at Calyxt state: “At Calyxt, we believe it is unethical NOT to use our technologies to address these issues head-on.” In reality, GMO is not equivalent to traditional plant husbandry. ⁃ TN Editor

Somewhere in the Midwest, a restaurant is frying foods with oil made from gene-edited soybeans. That’s according to the company making the oil, which says it’s the first commercial use of a gene-edited food in the U.S.

Calyxt said it can’t reveal its first customer for competitive reasons, but CEO Jim Blome said the oil is “in use and being eaten.”

The Minnesota-based company is hoping the announcement will encourage the food industry’s interest in the oil, which it says has no trans fats and a longer shelf life than other soybean oils. Whether demand builds remains to be seen, but the oil’s transition into the food supply signals gene editing’s potential to alter foods without the controversy of conventional GMOs, or genetically modified organisms.

Among the other gene-edited crops being explored: Mushrooms that don’t brown, wheat with more fiber, better-producing tomatoes, herbicide-tolerant canola and rice that doesn’t absorb soil pollution as it grows.

US announces more support for ‘heroic’ White Helmets in Syria

The Trump administration is doubling down on backing the White Helmets, the self-proclaimed civil defense group with often controversial activity in militant-held areas of Syria, pledging a $5 million donation at a conference.

The contribution was announced by ambassador James Jeffrey, US special envoy to the anti-Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS) coalition, at the third Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, held in Brussels.

The $5 million will fund both the “vital, life-saving operations” by the White Helmets and the work of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM), a UN body created in late 2016 to investigate – but not prosecute – alleged atrocities in Syria after 2011.

How bad was that Facebook outage? Downdetector ranks it as worst service issue it’s ever tracked

Ookla, the Seattle-based company which counts Downdetector among its stable of properties, had its eye on Facebook all day Wednesday as the social media giant struggled with a severe service issue. The company’s outage, as it turns out, ranks as the largest ever recorded by Downdetector, which makes a point of tracking such data.

Downdetector started receiving a large volume of problem reports from users around the world starting at 8:15 a.m. PT. According to the company, the reports indicated that Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp weren’t working as expected, and lasted for nearly 12 hours before the volume of reports demonstrated a significant drop.

Our systems processed about 7.5 million problem reports from end users over the course of this incident.

“By duration, this is by far the largest outage we have seen since the launch of Downdetector in 2012,” Tom Sanders, co-founder of Downdetector, said in a statement. “Our systems processed about 7.5 million problem reports from end users over the course of this incident. Never before have we such a large scale outage.
