Been wondering about Mattis. I think he either took a bribe to keep India off the sanctions list, or got some extra dough from a defense contract with them.

A bit more on the deals…

>During his second visit to India this past September for the so-called “2+2 Dialogue,” Mattis convinced officials in New Delhi to sign the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA), a landmark agreement that allowed the militaries of the two countries to operate more effectively together. The pact had been languishing unsigned for more than a decade due to a litany of reservations on both sides until Mattis’ successful intervention.

>In August 2017, the U.S. Congress enacted the “Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act” (CAATSA) partially as a response to Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The law mandated that sanctions be imposed on any country that conducted business with Moscow, putting India squarely in the crosshairs of the statute’s sanctions regime given New Delhi’s deep defense relationship with Russia. With the specter of sanctions looming ominously overhead, many feared that the U.S.-India relationship would unravel unless a waiver was secured.

>Keenly aware of the fallout U.S.-India ties would suffer if sanctions were imposed, Mattis spearheaded efforts to secure a country-specific waiver for India.

Five months ago, India was buying anti-craft weapons from Russia, which is a HUGE no-no.

>India’s decision to buy Russian anti-aircraft weapons threatens to jeopardize a landmark defense cooperation agreement with the United States, senior Republican senators warned this week.
