Recent posts by @the.new.federation, which has more than 38,000 followers, include a post likening Representative Maxine Waters to an ape, one that labels an image depicting prison rape as “how socialism works,” and several suggesting that Ruth Bader Ginsburg died months ago and is “better off dead.” Yesterday, it asked, “If Muslims can behead Christians, why can’t we do the same to them?” That post has 2,088 likes.

—One of the rare deviations from the happy talk appeared in The Wall Street Journal on Jan. 1, 2016,observing that “most Ukrainians say the revolution’s promise to replace rule by thieves with the rule of law has fallen short and the government acknowledges that there is still much to be done.”

—Actually, the numbers suggested something even worse. More and more Ukrainians rated corruption as a major problem facing the nation, including a majority of 53 percent in September 2015, up from 28 percent in September 2014, according to polls by International Foundation for Electoral Systems.

—So, as the hard lives of most Ukrainians got harder, the elites continued to skim off whatever cream was left, including access to billions of dollars in the West’s foreign assistance that has kept the economy afloat.

—There was, for instance, the case of Finance Minister Natalie Jaresko, who was regarded by many pundits as the face of Ukraine’s reform before departing last April after losing out in a power struggle. Yet, Jaresko was hardly a paragon of reform. Prior to getting instant Ukrainian citizenship and becoming Finance Minister in December 2014, she was a former U.S. diplomat who had been entrusted to run a $150 million U.S.-taxpayer-funded….

—Jaresko’s compensation was capped at $150,000 a year, a salary that many Americans – let alone Ukrainians – would envy, but it was not enough for her. So, she engaged in a variety of maneuvers to evade the cap and enrich herself by claiming millions of dollars in bonuses and fees.

—Ultimately, Jaresko was collecting more than $2 million a year after she shifted management of the Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF) to her own private company, Horizon Capital, and arranged to get lucrative bonuses when selling off investments, even as the overall WNISEF fund was losing money, according to official records…..

Exclusive: Mainstream U.S. journalism and propaganda are getting hard to tell apart, as with the flurry of “corruption” stories aimed at Russia’s Putin and other demonized foreign leaders, writes Robert Parry.

Sadly, some important duties of journalism, such as applying evenhanded standards on human rights abuses and financial corruption, have been so corrupted by the demands of government propaganda – and the careerism of too many writers – that I now become suspicious whenever the mainstream media trumpets some sensational story aimed at some “designated villain.”

Far too often, this sort of “journalism” is just a forerunner to the next “regime change” scheme, dirtying up or delegitimizing a foreign leader before the inevitable advent of a “color revolution” organized by “democracy-promoting” NGOs often with money from the U.S. government’s National Endowment for Democracy or some neoliberal financier like George Soros.

We are now seeing what looks like a new preparatory phase for the next round of “regime changes” with corruption allegations aimed at former Brazilian President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The new anti-Putin allegations – ballyhooed by the UK Guardian and other outlets – are particularly noteworthy because the so-called “Panama Papers” that supposedly implicate him in offshore financial dealings never mention his name.

Or as the Guardian writes: “Though the president’s name does not appear in any of the records, the data reveals a pattern – his friends have earned millions from deals that seemingly could not have been secured without his patronage. The documents suggest Putin’s family has benefited from this money – his friends’ fortunes appear his to spend.”

Note, if you will, the lack of specificity and the reliance on speculation: “a pattern”; “seemingly”; “suggest”; “appear.” Indeed, if Putin were not already a demonized figure in the Western media, such phrasing would never pass an editor’s computer screen. Indeed, the only point made in declarative phrasing is that “the president’s name does not appear in any of the records.”

A British media-watch publication, the Off-Guardian, which criticizes much of the work done at The Guardian, headlined its article on the Putin piece as “the Panama Papers cause Guardian to collapse into self-parody.”

But whatever the truth about Putin’s “corruption” or Lula’s, the journalistic point is that the notion of objectivity has long since been cast aside in favor of what’s useful as propaganda for Western interests.

Some of those Western interests now are worried about the growth of the BRICS economic system – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – as a competitor to the West’s G-7 and the International Monetary Fund. After all, control of the global financial system has been central to American power in the post-World War II world – and rivals to the West’s monopoly are not welcome…. Full article

Something is off. (they are just figuring that out now?)

Over the past decade, any time the Fed, BOJ or ECB surprised the market dovishly, risk assets surged. And yet, when the ECB did just that on March 9, when Draghi unveiled TLTRO prematurely, the Stoxx slumped. And, more concerningly, after a brief rally yesterday at 2pm in kneejerk response to a Fed that has now fully capitulated on normalizing monetary policy and announced it will end its balance sheet runoff by September, US markets not only faded all gains, but closed sharply lower.

When commenting on the Fed's decision, and the market's surprising reaction, we said that it was too early to draw conclusions from the S&P's reaction, where a blast of selling took place at precisely 3:30pm setting the dour mood into the last 30 minutes of trading. However, the overnight session which saw both European stocks struggle and U.S. equity futures slide despite some bullish sentiment in Asia, it appears that investors still have a some questions for Powell, among which the most important one: "What does the Fed know that nobody else does for it to capitulate so abruptly", and what might be lurking in the shadows.

So far that answer is missing, and it explains why US equity futures have continued to sink despite a Fed which is now all in on reflating if not the economy, which by now it is clear it has little control over, then at least capital markets. Meanwhile, as risk assets are shunned, investors are plowing into safe havens as the yield on 10-year Treasuries extended Wednesday’s drop, rates slumped across Europe and gold jumped.

As European shares wilted and futures faltered, banks suffered the brunt of selling from the dovish doubling down, expressing traders' usual worries about low borrowing rates, and dragging the European STOXX 600 down 0.2%, though London’s FTSE edged up as its miners were lifted by higher copper and metals prices.

But the real action was in the bond markets, where the stampede into safety continued, with the 7Y inches away from inverting below the effective Fed Funds rate. (dis is NOT good)

Earlier in Asia, MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.5%. Chinese blue-chips, which spent the morning swinging between small losses and gains, were up 0.4% in afternoon trade, while Seoul’s Kospi also added 0.4% as regulators announced plans to cut the stock transaction tax this year. Australian shares ended flat after see-sawing throughout the day. A drop in the jobless rate tempered market expectations of a rate cut. Markets in Japan were closed for a public holiday.

In other central bank news, also overnight, the Swiss National Bank kept rates on hold, cut its inflation forecast and said it will remain active in the currency market to curb any appreciation in the Swiss franc

The article by Andrew E. Kramer reported that there were three Islamic battalions “deployed to the hottest zones,” such as around the port city of Mariupol. One of the battalions is headed by a former Chechen warlord who goes by the name “Muslim,” Kramer wrote, adding:
