Yes well, it occurs to me that there were quite a number of things that were lost to Rome's fall, or had not yet been invented, several of which cause, exacerbate, or justify diseases as God's punishment for sin:

Proper sanitation in population centers

RATS living in the old Roman sanitation systoms that still functioned.

The use of leches, leaches, more leachers, and still MORE leaches, as well as candles and sharing single room living space with the diseased, fleas, rotting things.

Clean water

The printing press (knowledge cures)

The selling of indulgences.

Attempting to protect other cities by not warning of an outbreak.

The Viri/Bacterium theory of disease.

Fertilizing fields with human excrement.

Poor nutrition.

Poor shelter from bad weathe.
